Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born during the Great Depression and the height of the modernist/fundamentalist controversies, Paul Emanuel Larsen entered pastoral ministries in the late fifties. Rooted in historical evangelical theology, he embarked on church planting through expository preaching and evangelism. In the mid-sixties, he also became politically involved in the civil rights movement. For over twenty-seven years, he pastored three churches while pursuing advanced pastoral doctoral studies. In 1986, he was elected president of his denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church. During his twelve years of service, he became involved in both national and international ecumenical affairs. For twelve years, he served as chair of the Annual Meeting of all United States Church Leaders. This included heads of Roman Catholic, Orthodox, mainline Protestant, and evangelical denominations. He aided his church in its emergence from its Swedish immigrant culture and its efforts to become an ethnically inclusive church body. During his tenure, the church grew by more than 50 percent. Retiring at age sixty-five, he spent the next twenty years pursuing evangelization and social justice on behalf of more than a half billion Indian Other Backward Castes and Dalits. He was the founding chair of both Truthseekers International USA and the William Carey Heritage Foundation. The former worked among the poorest of the poor, while the latter developed the first Indian university-accredited evangelical PhD in Christian studies. This book chronicles the way one pastor has sought to navigate the harsh ongoing polarizations in theology, race, and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Alaskan Gold Mine: The Story of No. 9 Above is a notable and tragic story of the discovery of Alaska gold in 1898. The mine had so many implications for leaders and institutions of the Evangelical Covenant Church, a tangled and contested case of ownership extending over two decades that went to the Supreme Court of the United States on four occasions. Visiting Alaska three times doing meticulous research into legal proceedings and conducting oral interviews, Carlson succeeded in crafting a compelling narrative of gold, grief, and greed. An Alaskan Gold Mine: The Story of No. 9 Above remains a classic case study of the Alaska gold rush as a whole, as well as the particular context of issues and personalities unique to the bonanza claim staked by a Covenant missionary on Anvil Creek above the boomtown Nome.

Book excerpt: From the Founding Fathers through the present, Christianity has exercised powerful influence in the United States—from its role in shaping politics and social institutions to its hand in inspiring art and culture. The Encyclopedia of Christianity in the United States outlines the myriad roles Christianity has played and continues to play. This masterful five-volume reference work includes biographies of major figures in the Christian church in the United States, influential religious documents and Supreme Court decisions, and information on theology and theologians, denominations, faith-based organizations, immigration, art—from decorative arts and film to music and literature—evangelism and crusades, the significant role of women, racial issues, civil religion, and more. The first volume opens with introductory essays that provide snapshots of Christianity in the U.S. from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as a statistical profile and a timeline of key dates and events. Entries are organized from A to Z. The final volume closes with essays exploring impressions of Christianity in the United States from other faiths and other parts of the world, as well as a select yet comprehensive bibliography. Appendices help readers locate entries by thematic section and author, and a comprehensive index further aids navigation.

Book excerpt: With over 1.3 million Swedish Americans in residence, it is no surprise that the United States has a wealth of landmarks that pay homage to the Swedish people and culture. Touring Swedish America details the locations, histories, and stories behind more than 1,000 such places, including the charming Holy Trinity Church, built in stone and brick in Wilmington, Delaware; the rustic S.M. Swenson log cabin in Austin, Texas; the water tower in the form of a rosemaled coffee cup in Stanton, Iowa; and actress Ann-Margaret's handprints outside the Mann Chinese Theater in West Hollywood, California. Published in conjunction with the Swedish Council of America, Touring Swedish America is the comprehensive guide to historic towns, homes, and churches erected during the mass Swedish migration beginning in 1840s, as well as the art, architecture, schools, hospitals, businesses, museums, and gardens still in use today. Organized by state and featuring easy-to-use appendixes that outline sites on the National Register of Historic Places, this comprehensive guide with handy regional maps is the perfect tool for all travelers on the hunt for slices of their Swedish past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although not always unswervingly, from antiquity until today, Christians have engaged in charity. As settings changed, compassion evolved, laying in place an ongoing mosaic of Christian ideas and institutions surrounding care. From the antique and medieval to the modern and contemporary, each age offers unique actors and insights into how compassion is viewed and achieved. We consider repeating motifs and novel appearances in the arc of Christian compassion which enlighten and inspire. Encountered on the journey are the formation and sacrifice of ancient Christians; an emphasis on virtues taught through sparing and sharing; the nascent social welfare of the Byzantine church; the sacralization and mobilization of a medieval church; innovative ideas from reformers who advance the role of the state; and modern movements in justice, peace, humanitarianism, mutual aid, and community development.
