Book excerpt: This is an easy-to-read, colloquial translation of "The Sutra of Ksitigarbha's Fundamental Vows", an ancient 7th century Buddhist sutra that is most relevant to a chaotic time like now and to distressed people like us in this troubled world. "Ksitigarbha" means "Earth Treasury" and reflects the hidden treasures in the minds and hearts of all of us sentient beings. Through His great kindness and mercy, before the Buddha went into nirvana, He entrusted us to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Mahasattva as the sole rescuer for this earth and this era. This important sutra discusses the causes-and-consequences and do's-and-don'ts in our lives. Also included are caring prayers and helpful endnotes, glossary as well as a study guide to understand the sutra teachings deeper. In this revised edition, most updates are in the endotes and glossary, including more information about Sanskrit words. A few updates in the sutra were intended to reflect closer to the Chinese version in hopes that the dharma can be better received. May this sutra bring you peace, calm as well as inspiration! Book excerpt: Although virtually unknown in the West, the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva has been popularly used for centuries in East Asia in the rituals concerned with death and dying. The Earth Store Sutra records various previous lives of Earth Store (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva in which he made vows. The first of these stories relates how the bodhisattva was once the daughter of a Brahmin woman who dies and is consigned to the hells for offenses that she has committed in her lifetime. In an act of filial responsibility and respect, the daughter travels to the hells to rescue her mother from its horrors and subsequently vows to rescue all beings who suffer there. The rich descriptions of the kinds of karmic retribution and punishments that the dead suffer in the hells are reminiscent of the Christian hell in Dante’s Inferno. The theme of this Sutra is to offer a model of filial respect and elucidate Earth Store Bodhisattva’s determination to use every means and expedient available to fulfill those vows.

Book excerpt: "Zen Buddhism is often said to be a practice of "mind-to-mind transmission" without reliance on texts - in fact, some great teachers forbid their students to read or write. But Buddhism has also inspired and accumulated some of the greatest philosophical texts of any religion. Two works lie at the center of Zen: The Heart Sutra, which monks recite all over the world, and The Diamond Sutra, which teaches the "perfection of wisdom" and cuts through all obstacles on the path of practice. It is perhaps the most studied of all the sutras, and by one count more than twenty thousand commentaries are noted." "Red Pine, as he begins his preface, explains: "The Diamond may look like a book, but it's really the body of the Buddha. It's also your body, my body, all possible bodies. But it's a body with nothing inside and nothing outside. It doesn't exist in space or time. Nor it is a construct of the mind. It's no mind. And yet because it's no mind, it has room for compassion. This book is the offering of no mind, born of compassion for all suffering beings. Of all the sutras that teach this teaching, this is the diamond. It cuts through all delusions, illuminates what is real, and cannot be destroyed. It is the path on which all buddhas stand and walk. And to read it is to stand and walk with buddhas."" "Red Pine, the translator and Buddhist scholar, has worked with this text for many years. He has consulted dozens of commentaries, in Chinese and in Sanskrit, to offer this brilliant new translation together with extensive commentary intended to present this sacred text in a new light. The result is a work of inspiration and guidance, a text of spiritual practice for all seekers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: For more than a thousand years, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra has been held in high regard in the Mahāyāna Buddhist countries of East and Southeast Asia and has been as popular as the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sūtras. Its wealth of theoretical and practical instruction in living a spiritual life often made it the first major text studied by newly ordained monks, particularly in the Chan tradition. This Sutra is regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment. It provides instruction on understanding one’s own Buddha-nature, the potential within every being for becoming a Buddha. The Sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The Sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physical, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into various levels of being, both human and non-human. At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūraṅgama Mantra. The Sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the Sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress
