Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survival in the Network: On the Persistence of Research Organizations in an Emerging Field H1: The likelihood of persistence in the development of a technology increases when the focal organization belongs to an interconnected clique of collaborating organizations in the community. It is obvious, though, that the position of a research organization in a collaborative r8d network is a multidimensional concept. Based on sociometric theory (e.g. Burt, 1992; Freeman, 1977 and 1979; Knoke and Kuklinski, 1983) several indicators of the position of an organization in its collaborative network can be operationalized. The first indicator is the size of the network to which an individual organization belongs. As the number of organizations collaborating with a focal organization increases, its exposure to diverse sources of 'tacit' knowledge increases (cohen and Levinthal, Access to multiple knowledge sources may in turn have a positive effect on the persistence of the organization to continue its efforts in the field. H2: The number of organizations with which a focal organization directly interacts will have a positive effect on its contribution-span. Network size alone does not yet capture the intensity of collaboration among directly interconnected organizations. If ego's network consists of N organiza tions, then the maximum number of possible linkages among the N actors is n(n if the network is symmetrical. Burt's proportional density indicator (1991) reflects the number of contact pairs the focal organization is involved in divided by the maximum number of contact dyads the organization could be in volved in, given the size of its network. Proportional density can now be linked to knowledge diversity. The more the proportional density in ego's network ap proaches its maximum value of 1, the more homogenous we assume the knowledge sources represented by the various actors in the network to be. Homogeneity has the advantage of introducing focus in the research agendas by the members of the network, but it has the potential disadvantage of reducing the variety of problem-solving approaches pursued by the network actors. Therefore, as a corollary to hypothesis 2, the influence of network homogeneity on organizational contribution-spans warrants further exploratory attention. In the course of their elaboration, we will show that these principles are general – i.e., that they hold for all organizations. 1.5 Conceptual Background To describe organizations as social systems conducting experiments and to present principles for designing an infrastructure supporting the “social experiment,” we use concepts from (organizational) cybernetics, social systems theory, and Aristotle’s ethics. In this book, we hope to show that concepts from these traditions – as introduced by their relevant representatives – can be integrated into a framework supporting our perspective on organizations. To this purpose, we introduce, in each of the following chapters, relevant concepts from an author “belonging” to one of these three traditions and show how these concepts contribute to describing organizations as social experiments (in Part I of the book), to formulating principles for the design of functions and organization structures supporting meaningful survival (Part II), and to formulating principles for the design of organization structures enabling the rich sense of meaningful survival (Part III). Of course, the relevance of cybernetics, social systems theory and Aristotle’s ethics can only be understood in full, after they have been treated in more detail – but based on what we said above, it may already be possible to see why these theories have been chosen as conceptual background.

Book excerpt: A series of projects were undertaken on the inter-relationship between career trajectories and decision-making in large organizations. The projects compared and contrasted the results from similar sized industrial and defense organizations. In following a number of individuals through to Director level, or the defense equivalent, it was noted that there was a complete change in the level of decision-making capability. The level dropped dramatically in many of the cases examined. As a consequence, the focus shifted from individuals to organizations since the problem was not personal but was related to the organization itself. A number of studies also were made of large high technology companies and the effect of a significant technology change on their survival. In one study, 5 out of 27 companies survived one change, with further depletion of their ranks with a second change. The conclusion reached from this and other studies is that the survival rate over the periods required for defense systems is on the order of 5 percent. This paper examines the reasons behind this survival rate, both for the survivors and the nonsurvivors, and develops a model based on the need to survive, changes in technology, and long-term obligations.
