Book excerpt: We know the bedrock themes upon which the Christian faith stands: creation, fall, redemption, restoration. As Christians, we live within these great moments of God’s plan for humanity and all of his creation. In other words, our lives are part of Christian theology—every part of our lives, even surgery. As a part of Zondervan’s Ordinary Theology series, The Scalpel and the Cross recounts New Testament professor Gene Green’s encounter with open-heart surgery and carefully examines the many ways in which Christian doctrine spoke into the experience. The result is a short book that avoids shallow explanations and glib promises, instead guiding readers to deeper understanding and enduring hope in the face of one of modern life’s necessary traumas.

Book excerpt: As Spain consolidated its Empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, discourses about the perfect Spanish man or "Vir" went hand-in-hand with discourses about another kind of man, one who engaged in the "abominable crime and sin against nature"—sodomy. In both Spain and Mexico, sodomy came to rank second only to heresy as a cause for prosecution, and hundreds of sodomites were tortured, garroted, or burned alive for violating Spanish ideals of manliness. Yet in reality, as Federico Garza Carvajal argues in this groundbreaking book, the prosecution of sodomites had little to do with issues of gender and was much more a concomitant of empire building and the need to justify political and economic domination of subject peoples. Drawing on previously unpublished records of some three hundred sodomy trials conducted in Spain and Mexico between 1561 and 1699, Garza Carvajal examines the sodomy discourses that emerged in Andalucía, seat of Spain's colonial apparatus, and in the viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico), its first and largest American colony. From these discourses, he convincingly demonstrates that the concept of sodomy (more than the actual practice) was crucial to the Iberian colonizing program. Because sodomy opposed the ideal of "Vir" and the Spanish nationhood with which it was intimately associated, the prosecution of sodomy justified Spain's domination of foreigners (many of whom were represented as sodomites) in the peninsula and of "Indios" in Mexico, a totally subject people depicted as effeminate and prone to sodomitical acts, cannibalism, and inebriation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City cop Edward X. Delaney solves a string of murder cases in these first two novels in the series by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author. Lawrence Sanders’s first novel in the Deadly Sins series became a New York Times bestseller and was made into an acclaimed film starring Frank Sinatra as hard-bitten New York City homicide detective Edward X. Delaney. The Edgar Award–winning Sanders would follow up with three more Deadly Sins novels—each one a New York Times bestseller—proving himself again and again to be “a master” (The New Yorker). The First Deadly Sin: New York Police Department captain Edward Delaney is called to the scene of a brutal murder. A Brooklyn councilman was struck from behind, the back of his skull punctured and crushed with an unknown weapon. No robbery, no known motive. The commissioner appoints Delaney to head up a secret investigation. As more young men are murdered in the same way, Delaney starts putting the pieces together, even as he’s distracted by the serious illness of his wife. Soon, he’s faced with a cop’s dilemma: He knows who the killer is, but the person is untouchable. That’s when Delaney lays a trap to bring a monster to justice . . . “Breathtakingly exciting.” —Newsday The Second Deadly Sin: World-renowned artist Victor Maitland is dead—found in his Mott Street studio stabbed repeatedly in the back. With no clear leads or suspects, the NYPD calls Chief Edward Delaney out of retirement. Following a winding path of greed, deception, and fraud, Delaney uncovers a long line of suspects that includes Maitland’s wife, son, and mistress. When a second murder rocks Manhattan’s art world, Delaney moves closer to the truth about what kind of a man—or monster—Maitland really was. But which of the artist’s enemies was capable of killing him and leaving no trail? “Sanders is a pro!” —Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: Surgery, Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Infertility describes the intersection of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and surgery in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of clinical disorders in reproduction. Unlike many texts currently available, this book provides a road map for management well beyond the how-to for a given problem. It brings you a cogent explanation about the when and why of management. The author balances decision trees and management paradigms with equal weight to surgery and ART as complementary procedures to enhance reproductive potential. He carefully explains options incorporating diagnostic studies into the paradigm that include conventional radiography (eg, hysterosalpingography), two- and three-dimensional ultrasound imaging and MRI analysis. The text includes clear discussion of the rationale for selecting one technique over another and the supporting role for surgery as a prelude to ART or as an appropriate first line management. The text is centered on dividing evaluations in infertility into the tandem topics of structure and function. All chapters include data from studies directed at the assessment of structure using two- or three-dimensional ultrasound and the assessment of function using the technology of the emerging field of functional genomics. The introductory chapters cover embryology and anatomy of the female reproductive tract, evidence-based medicine in reproductive medicine and diagnostic studies that include imaging studies and the emerging field of microarray analysis and the insight gained from this technology. Each clinical chapter describes specific anatomic abnormalities and an approach emphasizing contemporary diagnostics and therapeutics. Every chapter begins with a historical perspective followed by discussions of state-of-the-art diagnostic studies, etiology, surgical management and guidelines for arriving at an outcomes driven decision regarding the intersection of surgery and ART. The discussion is supported by over 300 images and drawings illustrating each abnormality and surgical procedure. All recommendations are data and outcomes based. This approach minimizes anecdotal data, intuition or clinical hearsay. The text emphasizes an evidence-based approach and presents outcomes to support suggested plans of management. The most clinically and cost effective technology is matched to the clinical setting. Bottom line recommendations are written in a clear and concise bullet presentation at the conclusion of each chapter to help you meet the challenge of clinical infertility practice.

Book excerpt: Started in 1958, Sanathana Sarathi is a monthly magazine devoted to Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) - the four cardinal principles of Bhagawan Baba's philosophy. It is published from Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Highest Peace) and acts as a mouthpiece of Baba's Ashram as it speaks of the important events that take place in His sacred Abode, besides carrying Divine Messages conveyed through Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The word meaning of Sanathana Sarathi is the 'Eternal Charioteer'. It signifies the presence of the Lord in every being as the atma guiding their lives like a charioteer. It implies that he who places his life, the body being likened to a chariot, in an attitude of surrender in the hands of the Lord, will be taken care of by the Lord even as a charioteer would take the occupant of his chariot safely to its destination. The magazine is an instrument to disseminate spiritual knowledge for the moral, physical and mental uplift of humanity without any discrimination as the subject matter discussed therein is always of common interest and of universal appeal. The fifteen Vahinis - streams of sacredness - known as the Vahini Series comprising annotation and interpretation of the Upanishads and other scriptures, Itihasas like the Ramayana, the Bhagavatha and the Mahabharata, and authentic explanations on Dhyana, Dharma, Prema, etc., have been serially published in this magazine as and when they emanated from the Divine pen of Bhagawan Baba. This magazine is published in almost all Indian languages, English and Telugu from Prasanthi Nilayam and others from respective regions. Every year Sanathana Sarathi comes out with a special issue in November commemorating the Divine Birthday. The English and Telugu magazines are posted on the 10th and 23rd respectively, of every month, from Prasanthi Nilayam. This magazine has wide, ever increasing circulation in India as well as abroad, as the study of it brings the reader closer to the philosophy of the Avatar in simple understandable language THUS SPAKE SAI... Discoursing during the launch of Sanathana Sarathi... From this day, our Sanathana Sarathi will lead to victory the cohorts of truth - the Vedas, the Sastras and similar scriptures of all faiths, against the forces of the ego such as injustice, falsehood, immorality and cruelty. This is the reason why it has emerged. This Sarathi will fight in order to establish world prosperity. It is bound to sound the paean of triumph when universal Ananda is achieved.

Book excerpt: This book considers how scientists, theologians, priests, and poets approached the relationship of the human body and ethics in the later Middle Ages. Is medicine merely a metaphor for sin? Or can certain kinds of bodies physiologically dispose people to be angry, sad, or greedy? If so, then is it their fault? Virginia Langum offers an account of the medical imagery used to describe feelings and actions in religious and literary contexts, referencing a variety of behavioral discussions within medical contexts. The study draws upon medical and theological writing for its philosophical basis, and upon more popular works of religion, as well as poetry, to show how these themes were articulated, explored, and questioned more widely in medieval culture.
