Book excerpt: Supervision has shifted from an authoritarian, didactic model to a relational one. The interpersonal dynamics between supervisor and supervisee are now seen as central to the development of a productive learning experience. As supervisors are becoming more sensitive to their trainee's vulnerability and anxiety, new frameworks for understanding and dealing with this shift are required. This book presents current thinking on such relevant issues as creating an optimal learning environment, establishing a safe space, developing an atmosphere of reflectivity, attuning oneself to the emotional experience of the supervisee, and encouraging the disclosure of the supervisee's countertransference.

Book excerpt: For many therapists, conflict with their clients, whether overt or subtle, can be a frustrating impediment to change. The same is true for clinical supervisors, who must juggle trainees' relationships with their clients alongside the complex and often charged interactions that take place during the supervisory hour. This book provides a blueprint to help supervisors navigate the most challenging dilemmas and conflicts that arise in the supervisory process. These include addressing skill deficits and competency concerns, working through role conflicts, and ethnicity and gender-related misunderstandings. Because these interpersonal dilemmas can be so challenging, they often represent a golden opportunity for real progress, in psychotherapy and supervision alike. With the aid of detailed and compelling case examples, the authors present a process model that offers specific strategies - such as exploration of feelings, focus on self-efficacy, and attention to parallel processes - that together enable supervisors and trainees to successfully resolve the problem at hand and achieve lasting success. This theoretically-grounded text is appropriate for supervisors and trainees of all theoretical orientations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief, practical guide to clinical supervision uniquely addresses supervisor and supervisee together. The purpose of the book is to help the supervisory dyad collaborate effectively to meet the goals of supervision: to ensure client welfare, educate and evaluate the supervisee, and help the supervisee cope with the emotional challenges of doing psychotherapy. To do so, the book provides guidance on how to implement evidence-based and best-practice recommendations at each stage of supervision: preparation, beginning, middle, conclusion of active supervision, and the post supervision relationship. The emphasis throughout is on developing and maintaining a positive, collaborative supervisory relationship. Establishing this requires that the members of the dyad understand and agree on their respective roles and responsibilities, trust each other to carry them out, and feel safe enough to discuss the process. This book facilitates this by describing these complementary roles and responsibilities, and by providing activities that help the dyad establish mutual understanding, set goals, and complete necessary tasks. The book also illustrates better and worse ways these roles can be fulfilled from the author’s experience. Other value-added features include sections devoted to: common problems in supervision and how to prevent or manage them, the competencies that supervisors and supervisees require to be prepared for their roles, how to incorporate diversity into supervision, and how to complete supervision contracts and evaluations. Written in an inviting, often conversational, tone the book is an invaluable aid to supervisors and supervisees of all levels of experience.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, the working alliance has emerged as possibly the most important conceptualization of the common elements in diverse therapy modalities. Created to define the relationship between a client in therapy or counseling and the client's therapist, it is a way of looking at and examining the vagaries and expectations and commitments previously implicit in the therapeutic relationship, explaining the cooperative aspects of the alliance between the two parties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical supervision sometimes lacks the elements necessary for a rigorous, helpful, and meaningful experience for the supervisee. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the supervisory working alliance, supervisee nondisclosure (i.e., when a supervisee does not communicate information that would otherwise be shared with the supervisor), and counselor burnout, specifically in a sample of counselors, social workers, and psychologists pursuing their original state licenses. Nondisclosure was examined to determine if it was a mediator of the relationship between the supervisory working alliance and burnout. Participants (n = 288) completed a demographic questionnaire, the supervisee form of the Working Alliance Inventory (Bahrick, 1989), the Disclosure in Supervision Scale (Gunn & Pistole, 2012), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter, 1997). Final analyses showed that supervisee nondisclosure did not mediate the relationship between the supervisory working alliance and burnout. However, the supervisory working alliance predicted nondisclosure (b = -.73, p

Book excerpt: The supervisory working alliance is an important outcome for supervision success (Ladany, Ellis, & Friedlander, 1999), and it has been proposed that the alliance is influenced by interpersonal, affective, and cultural supervisee characteristics (Bennett, Mohr, Deal, & Hwang, 2013; Bhat & Davis, 2007; Dickson, Moberly, Marshall, & Reilly, 2011). To that effect, the aim of the present study was to examine a proposed model of relationships between trainee ratings of the supervisory working alliance, trainee willingness to disclose in supervision, supervisee shame-proneness, and interdependent self-construal using structural equation modeling. A sample of 201 counselors-in- training participated in the study, and results suggested that the target model exhibited good fit to the data. An alternate model of relationships was also examined and similarly evidenced good fit to the data but did not significantly improve model fit. The following hypothesized relationships were supported: 1) higher interdependent self-construal predicted greater shame-proneness for trainees and 2) greater willingness to disclose in supervision predicted higher ratings of the supervisory working alliance. However, shame-proneness was not a significant predictor of trainee disclosure or of the supervisory working alliance, and trainee willingness to disclose was not found to mediate the relationship between shame-proneness and the supervisory working alliance. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most critical and influential relationship affecting one’s growth as a mental health professional is the relationship between the clinician and the supervisor. Good supervisors breed good therapists. This book goes beyond facts and figures to provide an innovative perspective on the supervision process. Through contributions by seven supervisees and the supervisor they all shared, readers are offered a rare glimpse into what takes place during the supervision hour. This book not only offers insight into the elements integral to effective supervision, but also teaches about the supervisory relationship. With contributors from various disciplines, theoretical orientations, and cultures, it shows how the supervisee and supervisor are able to navigate these differences while still gaining the most from supervision. Topics that are covered include cultural competence in multicultural supervision and remote supervision when it is conducted between clinicians in different countries, as well as an original study by the authors on the experiences of supervisees during the global Covid-19 pandemic and the transition to remote supervision. For mental health professionals who are training to be supervisors or experienced supervisors looking to improve their skills, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for professional development.

Book excerpt: Through inclusion in the 2001 standards of The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), triadic supervision is recognized as equivalent to individual supervision. This study used the Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) to measure differences in the working alliance between 76 supervisees receiving individual or triadic supervision and 47 supervisors who conducted supervision using individual or triadic supervision models. Results revealed that supervisees receiving triadic supervision perceived the working alliance slightly higher than those receiving dyadic supervision on the SWAI Client Focus Subscale. Supervisors using dyadic supervision scored significantly higher on the SWAI Identification Subscale. Implications for the field of supervision and recommendations for counselor educators are discussed.
