Like a sturdy New England farmhouse, Perrin has added to it over the years to reflect his subsequent sugaring experiences, and includes in this latest edition a “postpostpostscript.” His celebration of simple, hard work to produce a “quite wonderful, maybe even sacred article” has not been diminished by plastic tubing, thrip infestations, and the strange new market for Vermont sap water.

Book excerpt: "Beautifully illustrated and dramatically told, this is the story of Canada's most recognized visual emblem, its proudest national icon, and its most successful brand logo: the red maple leaf flag. Our flag is seen by millions of Canadians every day and by millions more people around the world. Its elegantly simple design is instantly identifiable, whether worn as a shoulder patch on the uniform of a Canadian peacekeeper or held high by the athlete chosen to lead Canada's team into the Olympic stadium. At home, we encounter the maple leaf symbol wherever we look: along the Trans-Canada Highway, at the entrance to national parks, flying over more than 20,000 federal government offices, in the skies on Air Canada planes. From bacon and beer to berets and badges, the stylized red maple leaf has become our nation's most successful brand and visual emblem. "I Stand for Canada chronicles the evolution of the maple leaf as Canada's pre-eminent symbol, from its first appearance in French colonial times to its ubiquitous 21st-century presence, central to the corporate identity programs of countless companies and organizations. The distinctive shape of the native sugar maple leaf was familiar to every settler of New France and then of British North America; it was the first emblem of the St. Jean Baptiste Society, founded in 1834, and in 1860 it was incorporated into the badge of the Royal Canadian Regiment. By Confederation, it was a widely accepted motif for the new nation; that year Alexander Muir composed "The Maple Leaf Forever," which served as its informal anthem. The majority of badges worn by soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I incorporated the mapleleaf into their design, and the Canadians who fought in Europe under a British flag returned home with a newly minted sense of national identity, made material by the maple leaf emblems they'd worn into battle. Parliament's first two attempts to establish a distinct Canadian flag, in 1925 and 1946, ended in stalemate, and it was not until 1964, when the nation was almost a century old, that Prime Minister Lester Pearson dared to inaugurate the political debate that would decide the issue. The entire country got into the fight, and the flag threatened to divide the country instead of bringing it together. In desperation, Pearson agreed to turn the decision over to an all-party committee, which considered several thousand possible designs, including offerings from the Group of Seven's A.J. Casson and A.Y. Jackson. After the longest debate in Canadian parliamentary history, the House of Commons voted to adopt the flag committee's surprisingly successful compromise. On February 15, 1965, Canada's official flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. In the 37 years since, the maple leaf flag has become our symbol of national pride, the unique and perfect Canadian logo - and Canadians, for all their supposed reticence, have become a nation of exuberant flag-wavers. "I Stand for Canada is the first comprehensive work on the origins, evolution, political history, and cultural significance of Canada's flag, one that combines rare archival illustrations and stunning contemporary images with a richly detailed and engaging narrative.

Book excerpt: Soon to be a feature film from the creators of Downton Abbey starring Elizabeth McGovern, The Chaperone is a New York Times-bestselling novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in the 1920s and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous silent-film star and an icon of her generation, a fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas, to study with the prestigious Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone, who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle, a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip, has no idea what she’s in for. Young Louise, already stunningly beautiful and sporting her famous black bob with blunt bangs, is known for her arrogance and her lack of respect for convention. Ultimately, the five weeks they spend together will transform their lives forever. For Cora, the city holds the promise of discovery that might answer the question at the core of her being, and even as she does her best to watch over Louise in this strange and bustling place she embarks on a mission of her own. And while what she finds isn’t what she anticipated, she is liberated in a way she could not have imagined. Over the course of Cora’s relationship with Louise, her eyes are opened to the promise of the twentieth century and a new understanding of the possibilities for being fully alive. Drawing on the rich history of the 1920s, ’30s, and beyond—from the orphan trains to Prohibition, flappers, and the onset of the Great Depression to the burgeoning movement for equal rights and new opportunities for women—Laura Moriarty’s The Chaperone illustrates how rapidly everything, from fashion and hemlines to values and attitudes, was changing at this time and what a vast difference it all made for Louise Brooks, Cora Carlisle, and others like them.

Book excerpt: “Dan Hinkley is a rare man, generous, inspired, and gifted with an eye for beauty that is given to few people. How I long to wander again in the galloping beauty of his garden at Windcliff. Here it is, in all its inspiring wonder.” —Anna Pavord, author of Landskipping and The Curious Gardener Daniel Hinkley is widely recognized as one of the foremost modern plant explorers and one of the world’s leading plant collectors. He has created two outstanding private gardens—Heronswood and Windcliff. Both gardens, and the story of how one begat the other, are beautifully celebrated in Hinkley’s new book, Windcliff. In these pages you will delight in Hinkley’s recounting of the creation of his garden, the stories of the plants that fill its space, and in his sage gardening advice. Hinkley’s spirited ruminations on the audacity and importance of garden-making—contemplations on the beauty of a sunflower turning its neck from dawn to dusk, the way a plant’s scent can spur a memory, and much more—will appeal to the hearts of every gardener. Filled with Claire Takacs’s otherworldly photography, Windcliff is spectacular for both its physical beauty and the quality of information it contains.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book takes a fresh look at preserving, offering all the basic information you need, but also featuring inspirational recipes from the store cupboards of the world. It covers everything from jams to cures, and shows you that you don't have to have lots of kit and produce to make delicious preserves - or wait forever before eating them. There are sections filled with expert advice on choosing ingredients and cooking every type of preserve, from marmalades to jellies to relishes to foods preserved in oil. All the classic recipes are included and Diana often gives tips for how to make a version of a classic that suits your palette. For example, she includes a sweet and sticky strawberry jam, a more-fruity and less sweet version, and a Swedish 'nearly' strawberry jam (which is more like a conserve and keeps in the fridge for only a couple of weeks). But this is also a treasure trove of recipes taken from the world's store cupboards. And most of them are luxuries that can be made from cheap ingredients - such as Thai spiced rhubarb relish, Alsace pear and Riesling jam and tea-smoked trout. Many recipes will also offer alternative ingredients - for example, make sloe gin with cranberries or plums.

Book excerpt: When a mysterious fire ravages the town of Donkleywood, causing the death of her beloved grandfather Nickolas, eleven-year-old Holly O'Flanigan, numb with grief, loses all hope of ever becoming a famous artist like him or of escaping her abusive foster family, the Smoralls. While hiding from them, Holly discovers a secret attic where her grandfather left a decidedly unusual paintbrush and a canvas with the image of a fantasy world-one Holly and three friends literally fall into. The painting is a gateway to the parallel world of Magora, where everything and everyone are created by painting. With her three sidekicks in tow, Holly enrolls in the exciting Cliffony Art Academy, where they learn to weave painting with magic, just as Grandfather Nickolas could. Her hopes of becoming a painter and escaping the Smoralls finally seem to be coming true. Meanwhile, valuable artwork is being stolen from the Gallery of Wonders. As these paintings could provide a portal back to the real world, Holly begins a search for the thief. She believes that the dark Duke of Cuspidor might be the culprit and that he has a spy among the instructors of Cliffony. But Holly's self-doubt keeps her from making any progress in school, and she struggles to learn the brushstrokes she needs so urgently. They not only bring objects, people, and animals to life, they're also Holly's best defense against the dangerous Unfinished-monstrous beings created when an artist leaves a painting incomplete. Like vampires, the Unfinished hunger for the one thing that can flesh out their bodies-blood. And because Holly is a Gindar, an artist with the rare ability to create a brand new species, they want Holly's blood most of all."
