Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subjection of Hamlet: An Essay Toward an Explanation of the Motives of Thought and Action of Shakespeare's Prince of Denmark Ago, Karl Werder, of Germany, promulgated his original and fascinating theory of the character of Hamlet; one so different from anything heretofore conceived of the prince, and one developed with such plausible ingenuity and force of illustration, that it startled for a while the world of thinkers; and men began to believe that they had, at last, found a solid basis of fact on which to account for the puzzling motives and actions of the character. Instead of being a doubter in thought, and a procrasti nator in deed, we were told that Hamlet was a quick witted and self-reliant man of business, taking advantage of every opportunity to execute his plans of revenge according to his oath, and failing of success only because he was hampered by surrounding circumstances. Bravely and skilfully he attempted to navigate his ship over a tempestuous ocean that must be crossed. He exerted every nerve, tacked and veered as he best could, and light ened his hold by sacrificing every encumbrance; but he was wrecked at last upon rocks that no pilot could avoid, amid storms that -no vessel could withstand. The ghost laid upop him the duty of avenging his murder. Merely to have plunged his sword into the king would have been a comparatively easy task; but what, then, would have been his own position? How would the act appear to the court and the people of Denmark? Thoroughly satisfied though he might be that it was an honest ghost he had seen, he had nevertheless no power to. Book excerpt: Vale Ferne was born in China, from where her family moved from another country; and now lives in Canada. Shakespeare captured her interest early in life, and a reading of Hamlet at a night school in Toronto intensified it. Others of her favorite writers are J.J. Rousseau, L.G. Byron and J.L. Borges. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Thought Quarter'd is her first book. In Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A thought Quarter’d Vale Ferne offers her own radical, fresh and witty reading of Shakespeare’s play in the light of the legendary history of Denmark. She goes beyond “deconstruction” to “reconstruction,” splitting and combining Shakespeare’s characters to create a whole new cast of her own. Her new version is a true Jeu d’esprit that can be read entirely for itself yet offers provocative insights into Shakespeare’s play. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: By this edition of HAMLET I hope to help the student of Shakspere to understand the play-and first of all Hamlet himself, whose spiritual and moral nature are the real material of the tragedy, to which every other interest of the play is subservient. But while mainly attempting, from the words and behaviour Shakspere has given him, to explain the man, I have cast what light I could upon everything in the play, including the perplexities arising from extreme condensation of meaning, figure, and expression. As it is more than desirable that the student should know when he is reading the most approximate presentation accessible of what Shakspere uttered, and when that which modern editors have, with reason good or bad, often not without presumption, substituted for that which they received, I have given the text, letter for letter, point for point, of the First Folio, with the variations of the Second Quarto in the margin and at the foot of the page.
