Book Synopsis Untimely Interventions by : Leigh Ross Chambers
Download or read book Untimely Interventions written by Leigh Ross Chambers and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As atrocity has become characteristic of modern history, testimonial writing has become a major twentieth-century genre. Untimely Interventions relates testimonial writing, or witnessing, to the cultural situation of aftermath, exploring ways in which a culture can be haunted by its own history. Ross Chambers argues that culture produces itself as civilized by denying the forms of collective violence and other traumatic experience that it cannot control. In the context of such denial, personal accounts of collective disaster can function as a form of counter-denial. By investigating a range of writing on AIDS, the First World War, and the Holocaust, Chambers shows how such writing produces a rhetorical effect of haunting, as it seeks to describe the reality of those experiences culture renders unspeakable. Ross Chambers is Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Michigan. His other books includeFacing It: AIDS Diaries and the Death of the Author.

Book Synopsis A Return to the Object by : Susanne Kuechler
Download or read book A Return to the Object written by Susanne Kuechler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on the work of anthropologist Alfred Gell to reinstate the importance of the object in art and society. Rather than presenting art as a passive recipient of the artist's intention and the audience's critique, the authors consider it in the social environment of its production and reception. A Return to the Object introduces the historical and theoretical framework out of which an anthropology of art has emerged, and examines the conditions under which it has renewed interest. It also explores what art 'does' as a social and cultural phenomenon, and how it can impact alternative ways of organising and managing knowledge. Making use of ethnography, museological practice, the intellectual history of the arts and sciences, material culture studies and intangible heritage, the authors present a case for the re-orientation of current conversations surrounding the anthropology of art and social theory. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars in the social and historical sciences, arts and humanities, and cognitive sciences.
Book Synopsis Perspectives On Global Culture by : Harindranath, Ramaswami
Download or read book Perspectives On Global Culture written by Harindranath, Ramaswami and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A cogent and incisive exploration of many of the key debates at the heart of postcolonial cultural studies, with a timely focus on the 'underside' of the much-hyped process of globalisation" David Morley, Professor of Communications, Goldsmiths College, UK. "Rawaswami Harindranath's lively book provides us with a comprehensive and engaging overview of the views from the margins in the global debate about globalisation and culture. Written with admirable clarity, this book fills in the blind spots of much Western theorising of the 'underside' of globalisation and makes a forceful argument for a truly critical and non-Eurocentric cosmopolitanism." Professor Ien Ang, ARC Professorial Fellow, University of Western Sydney This book explores significant aspects of the cultural and social impact of globalization on the developing world by examining intellectual contributions and cultural expression in Latin America, Africa, and South and South East Asia. How do we understand and conceptualize the 'underside' of globalization? How can voices from the margins challenge dominant discourses? In what ways do 'culture wars' contribute to the politics of nationalism, indigeneity, and 'race'? The book surveys key debates on the politics of representation and cultural difference, paying particular attention to issues such as subalternity, cultural nationalism, third cinema, multiculturalism, and indigenous communities. It offers an original synthesis of ideas on these topics, and traces the lines of connection between national cultural and political projects during anti-colonial struggles and more contemporary forms of national and transnational cinema and television. Harindranath invites us to consider non-metropolitan cultural forms in the context of contemporary issues relating to the politics of difference. Perspectives on Global Culture is important reading for students and researchers in media and cultural studies and sociology, as well as for those interested in debates on 'race' and ethnicity.
Book Synopsis Film As Ethnography by : Peter Ian Crawford
Download or read book Film As Ethnography written by Peter Ian Crawford and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1992-11-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the reasons why anthropologists have not used the camera as a research instrument or film as a means of communicating ethnographic knowledge. It suggests that images and words in this discipline operate on different logical levels; that they are hierarchically related; that whereas writings may encompass the images produced by film, the inverse of this cannot be true. The author argues for this position further by suggesting that the visual is to the written mode as "thin description" (giving a record of the form of behaviour) is to "thick description" (giving an account of meaning).
Book Synopsis Fields of Vision by : Leslie Devereaux
Download or read book Fields of Vision written by Leslie Devereaux and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-05-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filmed images dominate our time, from the movies and TV that entertain us to the news and documentary that inform us and shape our cultural vocabulary. Crossing disciplinary boundaries, Fields of Vision is a path-breaking collection that inquires into the power (and limits) of film and photography to make sense of ourselves and others. As critics, social scientists, filmmakers, and literary scholars, the contributors converge on the issues of representation and the construction of visual meaning across cultures. From the dismembered bodies of horror film to the exotic bodies of ethnographic film and the gorgeous bodies of romantic cinema, Fields of Vision moves through eras, genres, and societies. Always asking how images work to produce meaning, the essays address the way the "real" on film creates fantasy, news, as well as "science," and considers this problematic process as cultural boundaries are crossed. One essay discusses the effects of Hollywood's high-capital, world-wide commercial hegemony on local and non-Western cinemas, while another explores the response of indigenous people in central Australia to the forces of mass media and video. Other essays uncover the work of the unconscious in cinema, the shaping of "female spectatorship" by the "women's film" genre of the 1920s, and the effects of the personal and subjective in documentary films and the photographs of war reportage. In illuminating dark, elided, or wilfully neglected areas of representation, these essays uncover new fields of vision.

Book excerpt: This volume is designed to revolutionize the field of communication by identifying a broad ethical theory which transcends the world of mass media practice to reveal a more humane and responsible code of values. The contributors, representing a diverse range of intercultural perspectives, defend the possibility of universal moral imperatives such as justice, reciprocity and human dignity. Through an examination of the values in which their cultures are grounded, they provide a short list of ethical principles which form the common ground from which to view contemporary issues in the media, interpersonal communication, mediation and conflict resolution.
Book Synopsis Documentary Screens by : Keith Beattie
Download or read book Documentary Screens written by Keith Beattie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documentary productions encompass remarkable representations of surprising realities. How do documentaries achieve their ends? What types of documentaries are there? What factors are implicated in their production? Such questions animate this engaging study. Documentary Screens is a comprehensive and critical study of the formal features and histories of central categories of documentary film and television. Among the categories examined are autobiographical, indigenous and ethnographic documentary, compilation films, direct cinema and cinema verite and television documentary journalism. The book also considers recent so-called popular factual entertainment and the future of documentary film, television and new media. This provocative and accessible analysis situates wide-ranging examples from each category within the larger material forces which impact on documentary form and content. The important connection between form, content and context explored in the book constitutes a new and lively 'documentary studies' approach to documentary representation.
