Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Children and Their School Training This work is addressed chiefly to teachers, parents, and others in daily contact with children; but contains information that is likely to interest those engaged in directing education, philanthropy, and other forms of social Work as well as those concerned with mental science. The book has been written in the hope of aiding an advance in the care of children, and in the practice of educational methods, by promoting a more exact study and classification of the children to be cared for and trained while giving an account of some conditions of Childhood in its many varieties as seen from the stand point of the observer who records what he sees as in other branches of physical science. For the purposes of observation, a clear account of the points to look at, what to look for, and what may be seen, normal or sub normal, forms the alphabet of our subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educating the Child at Home: Personal Training the Work Habit By writing this book in plain English it is hoped to reach two results: Firstly. To open the preserves of pedagogy and child-psychology to those who, though naturally most intensely interested in the subject, arc deterred therefrom by the forbidding phraseology wherein it has hitherto been discussed and presented. Secondly. To help mothers to resume and do their sacred duty by their children instead of shirking it and delegating it to the school. All that I have written is based upon actual practical experience and study. Like the long search for the Promised Land is the search for an efficient school, while the great opportunity of home instruction and education is ignored. Where shall I find the best school for my children? Teach them yourself the things you know and can do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training School Quarterly, Vol. 7: July, August, September, 1920 Books on child study are apt to stress the instinctive basis of a child's nature. This is as it should be. We must know of the influences that go to make mind, family, race, sex, maturity. But we must not forget that these factors come into contact with another, environment. Heredity determines the ability to assimilate knowledge, environment furnishes the material of which the particular bits of knowledge which a child possesses is made. We need then a study of the contents of children's minds, and while the investigations which' have been made along that line are valuable and suggestive, they cannot take the place of a real first-hand study of the child's environment. I am rather of the opinion that we should make time if, instead of starting to cram knowledge into the child as soon as he starts to school, we should spend much time exploring the recesses of his mind to find out what he already has stored away in it. That would save us from teaching what, as Dodd says, he always knowed, as well as from teaching something which the child is utterly unable to grasp because of a lack of experiences, or which he grasps incorrectly because of faulty bases of knowledge. For some time we have been giving lip service to the doctrine that the teacher should teach children that subject-matter is a means to an end. I believe that it is largely lip service only because in the training of teachers we still place the great emphasis of time, effort and teachers on subject-matter with very little time given to, the study of the child. I believe it, further, because teachers in schools spend much time teaching subject - matter and little time studying their children. Teachers must always keep in mind that it is the child that is important; the child gives us our work to do. When we have our schools constructed upona scientific basis I believe that we shall be able to know children as well as it is possible to know subject-matter, and when that is true we shall be able to accomplish many fold what we are now accomplishing. So much of our teaching is now a hit or miss aflair. So much of our subject really doesn't make any difference anyway. We're getting better, but we've a long way to go. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care and Training of Children Knowing the individual child, the parent will be prepared, as no one else can be, to cope with any condition which may arise in its training. Further than this, the knowl edge so acquired will prove helpful in situa tions in which a stranger must be called in for help. In all matters pertaining to child study and child life, broad general principles can be laid down, but there must be, in addi tion to this, study of personality in order to carry principles out in detail. A careful reading of the several chapters of this book will readily Show that, even a conscientious carrying out of the principles suggested in securing right conduct in children, will often result in failure unless the particular needs of the individual child are studied and met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes Early Training of Children For the average parents the great educational thinkers seem to have existed in vain the wisdom of Plato, with its perennial freshness and beauty, the noble ideal of Milton, the excellent sense of Locke, the originality of Rousseau, the loving insight of Pestalozzi, the abundant thought and suggestiveness of modern writers on education, are guiding lights which exist not for them. They are at no trouble to settle which definition of education is most satisfactory to them, they are not oppressed by the importance of the subject with which they have to deal. The child belongs to them; its relations to society and humanity do not come within the scope of their thought. They gather up, in some sort of fashion, the cur rent ideas of their time with regard to the bringing up of children, and they act upon these. If they are well-to-do, a conventional care and treatment8 Notes on tne E arty Training of a'ta'ron. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seguin Physiological School for the Training of Children of Arrested Mental Development This School is situated in an elevated section of the city, about a mile from the railroad station, and in one of the most attractive of the residence portions of Orange. The grounds comprise nearly four acres, the house standing at an elevation of two hundred fifty feet above sea level. To the east and south stretches a beautiful park of forty-seven acres, separated from the grounds of the school by a hedge, while to the west the outlook is upon some of the finest lawns in Essex County. The climate of this section of country is justly renowned for its mildness and salubrity, and many persons unable to stand the strong salt air of New York and Brooklyn have become satisfied residents of Orange, the advantages gained in this short distance being remarkable, especially in cases involving catarrhal and throat troubles. Here we have the pure air and quiet of the country, great shade trees under which the children may sit or play, and broad stretches of grassy lawns with facilities for all out-door games. The surrounding country, with its varied surface of mountain and valley, not only affords pleasing views but is of great value in promoting the physical well-being of children whose constitutional peculiarities make them especially dependent on stimulating climatic environment. These will be used to unlock the doors into our house of study. What we say will be directly related to these words education, the child, the Bible School. It is not the province of this lecture to deal primarily and fundamentally with the educational problem. And yet when we would talk or write suggestively and intelligently of the child, and the child's relation to the school, the thought of education becomes close, vital and necessary. We must also realize that the child was not made for the school but the school for the child. And the natural and normal answer for the school's existence is for the purpose of edu cation. What then is the function of education? Education, says President Butler, of Columbia, is the adaptation of a person, a self-conscious be ing, to environment and the development of capacity in a person to modify or control that environment. It is first a matter of principles and second a matter of methods. To prepare us for complete living is the function which education has to discharge. He has undertaken the dificult task of applying science to practice without leading the practitioner over the technical ground upon which the practice is based. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Nature Child Nurture: A Text-Book for Parents' Classes, Mothers' Clubs, Training Classes for Teachers of Young Children, and for Home Study The topics that are discussed in this little book are all related to the training of young children. Occasionally suggestions are offered as to the application of the principles that are presented to the shaping of the characters of children who are over twelve years of age, but it is chiefly to guard against the danger of misunderstanding or misapplication of the methods that are recom mended for use with those who are younger. The difficult problems that rise in the training of the adolescent boy or girl have purposely been reserved for future volumes, as in many cases the methods to be \used with them must be very different, indeed sometimes almost the reverse of those that will be most helpful with the young child. Even in this limited field of the moral educa tion of the young child the lessons deal with only a part of the fundamental problems that every parent must face. In a companion volume others of these will be discussed in a similar way, especial attention being given to the matters that most intimately concern the child's religious training.
