Book excerpt: Quantitative Human Physiology: An Introduction, winner of a 2018 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty), is the first text to meet the needs of the undergraduate bioengineering student who is being exposed to physiology for the first time, but requires a more analytical/quantitative approach. This book explores how component behavior produces system behavior in physiological systems. Through text explanation, figures, and equations, it provides the engineering student with a basic understanding of physiological principles with an emphasis on quantitative aspects. Winner of a 2018 Textbook Excellence Award (College) (Texty) from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association Features a quantitative approach that includes physical and chemical principles Provides a more integrated approach from first principles, integrating anatomy, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology Includes clinical applications relevant to the biomedical engineering student (TENS, cochlear implants, blood substitutes, etc.) Integrates labs and problem sets to provide opportunities for practice and assessment throughout the course NEW FOR THE SECOND EDITION Expansion of many sections to include relevant information Addition of many new figures and re-drawing of other figures to update understanding and clarify difficult areas Substantial updating of the text to reflect newer research results Addition of several new appendices including statistics, nomenclature of transport carriers, and structural biology of important items such as the neuromuscular junction and calcium release unit Addition of new problems within the problem sets Addition of commentary to power point presentations

Book excerpt: "Stuart Fox, Ph.D., wrote the first edition (published 1983) to help students understand the concepts of human physiology, and this objective has remained the guiding principle through all of the subsequent editions. All editions have been lauded for their readability, the currency of the information, and the clarity of the presentation. The fifteenth edition continues this tradition by presenting human physiology in the most current, readable, and student-oriented way possible. This milestone edition is marked by a unique cover, the addition of a Digital Author, a new art program, and the updating of terminology and content. It takes a village! To create this landmark fifteenth edition, Stuart had the support of Krista Rompolski as the Digital Author and a superb team at McGraw-Hill Education and MPS Limited. This team includes Michael Ivanov, Fran Simon, Andrea Eboh, Kelly Hart, Jessica Portz, Christina Nelson, Joan Weber, Angela FitzPatrick, Amy Reed, Jim Connely, Kristine Rellihan, Matt Backhaus, and Lori Hancock. We are all incredibly grateful to the many reviewers who provided their time and expertise to critically examine individual chapters and be Board of Advisor partners. These"--

Fox helps students master the fundamentals by providing appropriate anatomical detail. Human Physiology, Twelfth Edition, is intended for the one-semester Human Physiology course often taken by allied health and biology students. The beginning chapters introduce basic chemical and biological concepts to provide students with the framework they need to comprehend physiological principles. The chapters that follow promote conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization of facts. Health applications are included throughout the book to heighten interest, deepen understanding of physiological concepts, and help students relate the material to their individual career goals. Every effort has been made to help students integrate related concepts and understand the relationships between anatomical structures and their functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend of Human Physiology, Especially: Adapted for the Use of Medical Students Preface to Fourth Edition A fourth edition of the Compend of Physiology having been called for, the author has taken the opportunity to revise many of the sections, to insert a few figures, and to add some ten pages of additional matter, which, it is hoped, will make the book more complete and increase its usefulness to the student. Preface to Second Edition This Compend of Physiology is the outgrowth of the author's system of examinations in the Quiz room during a number of years, and was written at the request of medical students who desired a compact and convenient arrangement of the fundamental facts of human physiology. As most medical students enter upon the study of physiology before they have acquired a thorough knowledge of anatomy, it was thought desirable that such anatomical details should also be inserted as would be essential to a clear conception of the functions about to be studied. It was believed that it would be practically useful to students during their attendance upon lectures and in reviewing the subject prior to examinations. The fact that during the first year after its publication the first edition has been exhausted, proves that it has met the needs of students. In preparing a second edition the author has carefully revised the entire work, and inserted some fifteen pages of additional matter, which it is hoped will still further increase the usefulness of the book. To those teachers of physiology who have kindly noticed and recommended the Compend to their students I tender my thanks, and trust that in its improved condition it will continue to merit their approval.
