Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students Guide in Quantitative Analysis A portion of the following pages originally appeared in the columns of the American Chemist, under the title: "Schemes of Analyses executed in the School of Mines, Columbia College." Numerous applications for copies in book form have induced the author to publish the Schemes under a more general title. Since writing the articles the author has been called to another sphere of labor, and the circumstances which led to their compilation are explained in the following paragraphs, quoted from the prefatory remarks accompanying the original publication. "The system of instruction in Quantitative Analytical Chemistry, organized in the School of Mines, Columbia College, by Dr. C. F. Chandler, has been developed by the Assistants, who have had charge of the Laboratory for Quantitative Analysis, Mr. Alexis A. Julien, Dr. Paul Schweitzer, and the writer. The practical examples and the methods of analysis were originally selected by Prof. Chandler; the latter have been modified by the Assistants, and from time to time they have introduced new processes, conforming to the advances made in this department of chemical science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis Since the publication of the first edition of this book numerous changes have been made in the standardized methods of analysis of certain industrial materials, as adopted by official committees of various scientific societies. In the present edition the discussions and detailed procedure have been modified to conform to the revised methods, wherever possible. This statement applies to the analysis of coal, water, fertilizers, dairy products and insecticides. A number of other analytical methods are now described, of which may be mentioned the gravimetric determination of the chloride, sulphate and phosphate radicals and the indirect determination of the halogens; the perchlorate method for potassium; the determination of chromium and vanadium in steel and the glyoxime method for nickel in steel; the analysis of brass and of soft bearing metals; and the volumetric determination of zinc. A part of the discussion of metallography and treatment of steel has been rewritten and several new sections have been added to this portion of the book. New photomicrographs have been substituted for the old ones and about fifteen new figures have been used at various points throughout the book, the latter being the work of the author's students in Chemical Engineering, to whom grateful acknowledgment is due. Finally, a new system of chapter division has been introduced in order to give greater emphasis to the sections dealing with industrial analysis. In the process of making these changes a considerable portion of the book has been rewritten and the discussions have been amplified, in the interest of added clearness. It is hoped that these changes will serve to enhance the usefulness of the book as a college text and that the favor with which the first edition was so generously received will not be undeserved by the present edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging introduction to data science that emphasizes critical thinking over statistical techniques An introduction to data science or statistics shouldn’t involve proving complex theorems or memorizing obscure terms and formulas, but that is exactly what most introductory quantitative textbooks emphasize. In contrast, Thinking Clearly with Data focuses, first and foremost, on critical thinking and conceptual understanding in order to teach students how to be better consumers and analysts of the kinds of quantitative information and arguments that they will encounter throughout their lives. Among much else, the book teaches how to assess whether an observed relationship in data reflects a genuine relationship in the world and, if so, whether it is causal; how to make the most informative comparisons for answering questions; what questions to ask others who are making arguments using quantitative evidence; which statistics are particularly informative or misleading; how quantitative evidence should and shouldn’t influence decision-making; and how to make better decisions by using moral values as well as data. Filled with real-world examples, the book shows how its thinking tools apply to problems in a wide variety of subjects, including elections, civil conflict, crime, terrorism, financial crises, health care, sports, music, and space travel. Above all else, Thinking Clearly with Data demonstrates why, despite the many benefits of our data-driven age, data can never be a substitute for thinking. An ideal textbook for introductory quantitative methods courses in data science, statistics, political science, economics, psychology, sociology, public policy, and other fields Introduces the basic toolkit of data analysis—including sampling, hypothesis testing, Bayesian inference, regression, experiments, instrumental variables, differences in differences, and regression discontinuity Uses real-world examples and data from a wide variety of subjects Includes practice questions and data exercises

This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Quantitative Chemical Analysis In writing the present book the author has endeavored in the first place to produce a text-book on Quantitative Analysis which shall meet his own needs in presenting the subject to his students. The text-books available did not give as thorough and at. the same time as comprehensive a view of the subject as seemed desirable. In order to present the subject from the theoretical as well as from Che practical standpoint, reference by the student to a very considerable number of text-books and journals seemed necessary. This was largely due to the fact that each author has given special prominence to a particular branch of the subject, such as gravimetric, electrolytic, volumetric, or gas analysis. In the present text-book the endeavor has been made to accord each of these subjects the relative prominence which is justified by the extent to which the methods concerned are actually used. Obsolete methods and new methods which have not come into general use have generally been excluded. In the arrangement and presentation of the subject-matter the needs of the student rather than the experienced analyst have been kept continually in view The needs of the student have been taken to be the acquisition of a thorough comprehension of the reasons for each step in an analysis as well as the development of the skill in manipulation which is necessary in rapid and accurate work. It is believed that by this method the requirements of the professional chemist will also be best served when a reference book is needed. The order in which the various general methods are taken up is that used by the author in instructing his classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Quantitative Chemical Analysis: For the Use of Students The system adopted is to teach at first the determination, indi vidually, of the constituents of compounds, composed of elements which will afterward, very frequently, be found variously asso ointed, particularly in mineral analysis; and then to teach the quantitative separation of these elements, in the analysis of com pounds containing a number of them; advancing, step by step, from the analysis of compounds of similar character to the analysis of more complicated ones, involving a knowledge and application of what has preceded. In addition to the series of what may be called strictly mineral have been added a number of analyses of substances of an organic character, found in commerce, which will give the student an insight into the work which will probably be required of him as a practical chemist. The range of these is necessarily restricted, as it is desired to keep the work within the limits of a simple handbook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Qualitative Analysis: A Laboratory Guide Tms manual is offered as a laboratory guide for stu dents of qualitative analysis who have had a year's work in general chemistry. It is the outgrowth of several years' experience with students registered in the varied courses of a university curriculum. The aim in the prep aration of the book has been to systematize the work as much as possible, yet to avoid encouraging rule of thumb work in the laboratory. Our viewpoint has been to give a sufficient number of well-organized characteristic reactions accompanied by appropriate questions to stimulate and encourage analytical thinking. The attempt is made to bring out the value of differential behavior toward reagents early so that the student has at the commencement of his qualitative study an idea of the ultimate application of the reactions. We do not deem the study of the reactions used in the schemes followed in the systematic procedure for the analysis of unknowns sufficient to give the student a grasp of qualitative analysis. The use of analytical questions bearing on the reactions studied has an inesti mable value in the student's analytical training and greatly broadens his knowledge of the chemistry of the metals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum.
