Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Dream: And Other Poems The Student's Dream. This poem, written in December, 1866, and inscribed to the Louisville Library Association, which failed to make a beginning, I now re-inscribe to the present Louisville Library Association, with the confident hope that it will, at a day not distant, make the vision solid fact. I sought my couch when worn with thought and slept, And on my senses, sunk in slumber, crept A vision full of pleasure, glad and gay, In which I revel'd till the morning's gray. In waking hours, when thinking thronged my brain With thoughts on thoughts profuse in endless train, I sought in books to trace their utmost worth, For well I knew the knowledge known on earth. But dearth of volumes bade me stop, and cease My little stock of learning to increase; Thus baffled oft, I longed to travel hence, Since here my study found no recompense, No lights to guide, no empires to explore; All thought at sea, that sea without a shore, While here and there some little island stood, Not large enough for fruitful culture good, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Etudes written by John Marx and published by . This book was released on 2019-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Marx's watercolors, first published in the Architectural Review, are a captivating example of an architect's way of thinking. Subtle and quiet they are nonetheless compelling works in how they tackle a sense of place, of inhabiting space and time all the while resonating with the core of one's inner being. There is an existential quality to these watercolors that is rare to be found in this medium. Something akin to the psychologically piercing observational quality of artists like De Chirico or Hopper. As architects strive to communicate their ideas, it is interesting to explore the world of Marx's watercolors as an example of a humane approach to conveying emotional meaning in relation to our environment. Marx's subject matter read like "built landscapes" heightening the role of the manmade yet wholly in balance with the natural world. This is a message and sentiment that is perhaps more important than ever to relay to audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eagerly awaited, brilliant, and engaging new poems by Tony Hoagland, author of What Narcissism Means to Me The parade for the slain police officer goes past the bakery and the smell of fresh bread makes the mourners salivate against their will. —from "Note to Reality" Are we corrupt or innocent, fragmented or whole? Are responsibility and freedom irreconcilable? Do we value memory or succumb to our forgetfulness? Application for Release from the Dream, Tony Hoagland's fifth collection of poems, pursues these questions with the hobnailed abandon of one who needs to know how a citizen of twenty-first-century America can stay human. With whiplash nerve and tender curiosity, Hoagland both surveys the damage and finds the wonder that makes living worthwhile. Mirthful, fearless, and precise, these poems are full of judgment and mercy.

Download or read book night thoughts written by Sarah Arvio and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable and unique work, award-winning poet Sarah Arvio gives us a memoir about coming to terms with a life in crisis through the study of dreams. As a young woman, threatened by disturbing visions, Arvio went into psychoanalysis to save herself. The result is a riveting sequence of dream poems, followed by “Notes.” The poems, in the form of irregular sonnets, describe her dreamworld: a realm of beauty and terror emblazoned with recurring colors and images—gold, blood red, robin’s-egg blue, snakes, swarms of razors, suitcases, playing cards, a catwalk. The Notes, also exquisitely readable, unfold the meaning of the dreams—as told to her analyst—and recount the enlightening and sometimes harrowing process of unlocking memories, starting with the diaries she burned to make herself forget. Arvio’s explorations lead her back to her younger self—and to a life-changing understanding that will fascinate readers. An utterly original work of art and a groundbreaking portrayal of the power of dream interpretation to resolve psychic distress, this stunning book illumines the poetic logic of the dreaming mind; it also shows us, with surpassing poignancy, how tender and fragile is the mind of an adolescent girl.

Book Synopsis Chaucer's Dream Poetry by : Barry A. Windeatt
Download or read book Chaucer's Dream Poetry written by Barry A. Windeatt and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1982 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes available in translation the texts that lie behind Chaucer's dream poems - The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, The House of Fame and Prologue to the Legend of Good Women. Chaucer's dream poems are now being increasingly studied and appreciated. With their attractively bookish dreamer figure and their graceful use of conventions and traditions, they have their distinctive place in Chaucer's work. But the nodern reader of these medieval poems particularly needs a sense of their literary context in the tradition of comparable narrative poems - largely in OId French - which Chaucer knew and drew upon. None of these French poems has ever been made available in English translation before, and many of the texts are difficult to access, being available only in dated French scholarly editions. The authors represented are Froissart, Machaut and Deschamps, as well as some minor and anonymous poems, and there are also relevant translations from Cicero and Boccaccio. The book gives an idea of what Chaucer's sources were in themselves, and in what ways the English poet was inspired to use and go beyond them, and this presents a picture of the poet at work. Some of the French poems are translated carefully by Chaucer, while with other poems he is selective, interested in certain sections of his sources only. In further cases, the original material can be seen to have provided a more general point of departure for Chaucer's own developments on his work.
