Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of the Metropolitan Community: A Study of Dominance and Subdominance Since the hypothesis under study is a broad statement about the role of metropolitan centers in the organization Of an entire society, its validity cannot be tested on a small segment of land area or population. For this reason one entire nation, the United States, has been taken as an example of a technologically advanced society. It has been subjected to study by subdividing its entire area into metropolitan communities, and by abstracting patterns of population distribution from various groupings of these metropolitan communities and of their parts. Book Synopsis Metropolis and Region by : Otis Dudley Duncan
Download or read book Metropolis and Region written by Otis Dudley Duncan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II of a series of six on Urban and Regional Economics originally published in 1960. This study discusses the future of urban developments in America. Has they already have megapolitan belts, sprawling regions of quasi-urban settlement stretching along coast lines or major transportation routes, current concepts of the community stand to be challenged. What will remain of local government and institutions if locality ceases to have any historically recognizable form? The situations described in this book pertain to the mid-century United States of some 150 million people. What serviceable image of metropolis and region can we fashion for a country of 300 million? The prospect for such a population size by the end of the twentieth century is implicit in current growth rates, as is the channeling of much of the growth into areas now called metropolitan or in process of transfer to that class.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The completion of this volume would not have been possible without the generous and dedicated help of numerous people. The book had its genesis in a conference held at Cornell University in the fall of 1990 that was organized by Dudley Poston, Paul Eberts, and Michael Hannan, all professors at the time at Cornell. With the very generous financial assistance of David Call, then the dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Poston, Eberts, and Hannan put together a two-day conference oflectures and papers by human ecologists from Cornell University and elsewhere. The conference focused on sociological human ecology and celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Amos Hawley's Human Ecology (Ronald Press 1950). Professor Hawley was the keynote speaker at the conference. Many of the authors of the chapters in this volume presented earlier versions at the Cornell conference in 1990. Cornell's Departments of Rural Sociology and Sociology also contrib uted financial assistance; however, without Dean Call's very generous support, the conference would not have been possible. A few months after the conference, Poston and Michael Micklin discussed the possibility of asking the various authors of the Cornell conference papers to revise them for publication in a volume on sociological human ecology. Many opted to do so, but others did not because of time and other kinds of commitments and constraints.
