Book excerpt: Most of our knowledge about the physical structure and the chemical composition of the Earth's deep interior is inferred from seismic data. The interpretation of seismic waves generally follows the assumption that the Earth's physical structure is grossly layered and that fluctuations of the physical parameters within individual layers are smooth in structure and small in magnitude. While this view greatly facilitates the analytic and interpretative procedure, it is clearly at odds with evidence from outcrops and boreholes, which indicates that compositional, structural and petrophysical heterogeneity in the Earth prevails over a wide range of scales. This book is the first to unify three different views of crustal and upper mantle heterogeneity. It brings together the geological view, which is derived from the analysis of crustal exposures and deep boreholes; the stochastic view, which attempts to find order and structure in these seemingly chaotic data; and the seismological view, which considers the end product of the complex interaction of seismic energy with the heterogeneous structure at depth. Gamburtsev and developed under his guid ance during the period 1948-1955 at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. During that period also, the first geophysical results concerning the deep structure of the earth's crust in several regions in Tien-Shan, the Pamir, and Turkmenia were observed. Beginning with 1956, the deep seismic sounding method has been used widely by geo physical research groups as well as by geophysical service organizations for regional studies in the USSR. Descriptions of this work have been given in reports by Yu. N. Godin, V. V. Fedynskii, D. N. Kazanli, and others. New variants of the deep seismic sounding method have been developed; continuous profiling (Yu. N. Godin, and others), and point soundings (N. N. Puzyrev, and others). Deep seismic soundings have been carried on outside of Russia also, and studies have been carried out on the use of the deep seismic sounding method in marine applications (E. I. Gal'perin, S. M. Zverev, 1. P. Kosminskaya, Yu. P. Neprochnov, and others). OVer the past decade, the deep seismic sounding method has joined the suite of geo physical studies as a highly detailed method for studying the earth's crust and upper mantle to depths of 50 to 100 km on land, and of 15 to 25 km in the deep oceans.

Book excerpt: The goal of the present work is the finding of general regularities of the crustal structure by means of comparisons of seismic data with gravity anomalies and contour intervals. The comparison of the gravimetric and seismic data was performed by two methods; graphic method and by the analysis of velocity columns of the earth's crust. There is a chapter in this work devoted to these two methods. Seismic investigations of the crustal structure in sea and ocean regions were carried out by the methods of refracted and reflected waves. Only the general features of these investigations is taken into consideration. The earth's crust is subdivided into continental and oceanic. A chapter is devoted to the study of the structural differences. All the results obtained during this investigation are the summary of the first and most general phase of works for the study of the abyssal crustal structure and the connection of deepseated and surface structures. In further study of this problem, it will be important to include a more detailed comparison of geophysical data with tectonic data and their multiple interpretation in order to find out necessary conditions of the crustal structural development.
