Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas provides an in-depth understanding of the metallurgy and fracture behavior of aluminum-silicon casting alloys, which are used in a wide variety of automotive, aerospace, and consumer product applications. The atlas includes over 300 high-definition microfractographs of fracture profiles and fracture surfaces, accompanied with detailed descriptions and analysis of the fracture features and their significance in the selection, processing, properties, and performance of the alloy. The microfractographs are described and classified according to criteria described in detail in the introductory chapters in the book. The factors determining the fracture mechanism in these alloys, on the basis of their physical and mechanical properties and fracture mechanics, are described and analyzed. The set of micrographs in this atlas include several unique features: classification according to the alloy and its processing history, detailed analysis of selected microregions of the fracture surface, reference of the fracture features to the phase constituents of the alloy, and high resolution and high microscopic magnification of the SEM images. This book will be of great value to anyone involved in the selection, processing, application, testing, or evaluation of aluminum-silicon castings. The target audience includes metallurgists, foundry personnel, failure analysts, purchasers of castings, researchers in physical and mechanical metallurgy, students, and educators.

Book excerpt: The microstructures and the morphologies of the phases of unmodified Al-Si alloys have been examined through the use of special etchants and a chemical extraction technique. X-ray diffraction studies have been used to confirm the metallographic observations. Although the dendritic form of the primary a phase was found to be unaltered by changes in the growth conditions, the form of the primary Si phase was not unaffected by these changes. The usual complex idiomorphic form of the Si phase was transformed to the dendritic form when growth occurred in a super-saturated liquid. Eutectic Si plates, which have been observed to grow from primary Si particles, dominate the eutectic transformation and, by branching, restrict the growth of the eutectic a phase. this mode of solidification produces fine eutectic colonies in this abnormal eutectic structure.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to generalize and analyze the extensive experimental and theoretical results on the phase composition, structure, and properties of aluminum alloys containing scandium. The effects of scandium on these properties are studied from a physico- chemical viewpoint. The authors present binary, ternary, and more complex phase diagrams for these alloys and consider in detail recrystallization, superplastic behavior, and decomposition of supersaturated solid solutions and the effects of solidification conditions on phase equilibria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Welding of Aluminium and its Alloys is a practical user's guide to all aspects of welding aluminium and aluminium alloys. It provides a basic understanding of the metallurgical principles involved showing how alloys achieve their strength and how the process of welding can affect these properties. The book is intended to provide engineers with perhaps little prior understanding of metallurgy and only a brief acquaintance with the welding processes involved with a concise and effective reference to the subject. It is intended as a practical guide for the Welding Engineer and covers weldability of aluminium alloys; process descriptions, advantages, limitations, proposed weld parameters, health and safety issues; preparation for welding, quality assurance and quality control issues along with problem solving. The book includes sections on parent metal storage and preparation prior to welding. It describes the more frequently encountered processes and has recommendations on welding parameters that may be used as a starting point for the development of a viable welding procedure. Included in these chapters are hints and tips to avoid some of the pitfalls of welding these sometimes-problematic materials. The content is both descriptive and qualitative. The author has avoided the use of mathematical expressions to describe the effects of welding. This book is essential reading for welding engineers, production engineers, production managers, designers and shop-floor supervisors involved in the aluminium fabrication industry. - A practical user's guide by a respected expert to all aspects of welding of aluminium - Designed to be easily understood by the non-metallurgist whilst covering the most necessary metallurgical aspects - Demonstrates best practice in fabricating aluminium structures

Book excerpt: Aluminium is a well established modern lightweight engineering and functional material with a unique combination of specific properties like strengh, formability, durability, conductivity, corrosion resistance, etc. It is present in many intelligent solutions in established markets like building, transport, packaging, printing, and many others, in our fast moving modern society. The various aluminium alloys can be processed quite efficiently in large quantities by conventional fabrication routes, as well as in special sophisticated forms and material combinations for highly innovative high–tec solutions and applications. This book contains latest information about all these aspects in form of the refereed papers of the II th International Conference on Aluminium Alloys "ICAA", where world–wide experts from academia and engineers from industry present latest results and new ideas in fundamental as well as applied research. Since 22 years the ICAA series provides scientists and engineers with a complete overview over the latest scientific and technological developments, featuring profound technology–based overviews and new innovative perspectives. This book is a reference for the scientific community as well as for the aluminium industry working on aluminium alloy development, processing and application issues. It gives a global perspective on the current focus of international research with emphasis on in–depth understanding of specific properties and applications of conventional and advanced aluminium alloys.

Book excerpt: The room temperature lattice parameters of Fe--5Si(subscript x)Al/sub 25-x/ alloys for x = 0 to 25 and Fe--3Si(subscript x)Al/sub 27-x/ alloys for x = 13.5 to 24.3 were measured, as well as alloys of the composition Fe6Si10Al22 and Fe--3 --Si16 6Al9 --, by x-ray techniques. Debye Scherrer powder photographs and a singly-iterative, weighted least-squares computer program were employed in this investiation. The values obtained were found to vary non-linearly from 5.6533A for Fe3Si to 5.7935A for Fe3Al for the Fe--5Si(subscript x)Al/sub 25-x/ alloys, and from 5.6569A for 10 wt % Fe--3Al2---90 wt % Fe--3Si2-- to 5.7148A for 50 wt % Fe--3Al2---50 wt % Fe--3Si2-- for the Fe--3Si(subscript x)Al/sub 27-x/ alloys. A polynomial fit was obtained for both curves. The lattice parameters of Fe6Si10Al22 was found to be 5.7308A and that of Fe--3 --Si16 6Al9 --, the Sendust alloy, 5.6993A. All values are corrected for refraction. Preliminary elastic constant measurements were also performed on a Fe3Al single crystal at 77.4°K.
