Book excerpt: In 1857 India, 12-year-old Meera escapes a life she has no say in--and certain death on her husband's funeral pyre--only to end up a servant to a British general in the East India Company. When a rebellion against British colonizers spreads, she must choose between relative safety in a British household or standing up for herself and her people. India, 1857 Meera's future has been planned for her for as long as she can remember. As a child, her parents married her to a boy from a neighboring village whom she barely knows. Later, on the eve of her thirteenth birthday, she prepares to leave her family to live with her husband's--just as her strict religion dictates. But that night, Indian soldiers mutiny against their British commanders and destroy the British ammunition depot, burning down parts of Delhi. Riots follow, and Meera's husband is killed. Upon hearing the news, Meera's father insists that she follow the dictates of their fringe religious sect: She must end her life by throwing herself on her husband's funeral pyre. Risking everything, Meera runs away, escaping into the chaos of the rebellion. But her newfound freedom is short-lived, as she is forced to become a servant in the house of a high-ranking British East India Company captain. Slowly through her work, she gains confidence, new friends, new skills--and sometimes her life even feels peaceful. But one day, Meera stumbles upon the captain's secret stock of ammunition, destined to be used by the British to continue colonizing India and control its citizens. Will Meera do her part to take down the British colonists and alert the rebellion of the stockpile? Or will she stay safe and let others make decisions for her? It really comes down to this: how much fire must a girl face to finally write her own destiny?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flame and Fortune in the American West creatively and meticulously investigates the ongoing politics, folly, and avarice shaping the production of increasingly widespread yet dangerous suburban and exurban landscapes. The 1991 Oakland Hills Tunnel Fire is used as a starting point to better understand these complex social-environmental processes. The Tunnel Fire isÊthe most destructive fireÑin terms of structures lostÑinÊCalifornia history. More than 3,000 residential structures burned and 25 lives were lost. Although this fire occurred in Oakland and Berkeley, others like it sear through landscapes in California and the American West that have experienced urban growth and development within areas historically prone to fire. Ê Simon skillfully blends techniques from environmental history, political ecology, and science studies to closely examine the Tunnel Fire within a broader historical and spatial context of regional economic development and natural-resource management, such as the widespread planting of eucalyptus trees as an exotic lure for homeowners and the creation of hillside neighborhoods for tax revenueÑdecisions that produced communities with increased vulnerability to fire. Simon demonstrates how in OaklandÊa drive for affluence led to a state of vulnerability for rich and poor alike that has only been exacerbated by the rebuilding of neighborhoods after the fire. Despite these troubling trends, Flame and Fortune in the American West illustrates how many popular and scientific debates on fire limit the scope and efficacy of policy responses.Ê Ê These risky yet profitable developments (what the author refers to as theÊIncendiary), as well as proposed strategies for challenging them, are discussed in the context of urbanizing areas around the American West and hold global applicability within hazard-prone areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We have to be prepared for everything, even for someone who destroys everything so that no one has it, not even him.’ They stood side by side again in silence on the terrace, high up on the mountain, watching the play of colours in the night sky. They heard the wind and the occasional cracking of ice floes piled on top of each other in the ocean in front of them. The waves that thundered recurrently against the rocks were a low murmur up on the mountain, accompanied by the fresh smell of the sea. ‘Will we win?’ asked Galbohei, without taking his eyes off the sky glow. ‘We have the advantage,’ replied Eremides. ‘We know the value of freedom and we don’t want to lose it. We know friendship and will not give it up. We know love and want to be able to continue to love.’ Antarctica, circa 1540. Two aging swashbucklers confer on how to defend or stand their ground against a hostile force they know. Things look tight. They live on an island, in a mountain rich in tradition and myths. It is called “The Mountain of Hope”. Actually, it is Dragomar, supposedly the ancient home of dragons and their successful “cultural successors”. A slightly pubescent youth is bored far away from Dragomar. Everything is trivial, transparent and repeats itself in a daily rhythm. He would like to travel the ocean but he is not allowed to yet. He dreams of adventures and battles that seem so real to him, as if he were having a déjà vu with a claim to historical truth. Fire seems to come out of his nose and he changes in other ways as well. He is drawn toward a distant island where there is a mountain with a crystal shining brightly and mysteriously at the top. He is told that he is a foster child and that his grandfather, his last relative, lives on the distant island. The budding hero sets out, meets various people, develops physical and mental abilities, is kidnapped. There is a sea battle for him, because he is supposed to be something like an heir to the throne. He learns about history, past forms of government and more about ancient myths. So much for the plot. That Italian emperor penguins completely deface and shred the “Band of Brothers” speech of Henry V; that a black dragon can spit black holes and is about to merge into the matrix; that really fascistic meanies are afraid of the crowd of penguins and are prone to vulgarity; that the topic of separation of powers is a real problem ... all this fills the pages in such a way that it is irrelevant whether there is a human, animal or dragon giving something to the best. A little excursion into humanity. A little unexplained philosophy; a little unexplained physics; a little unexplainable behaviour. Myths, legends, magic - and everyday life.
