Book excerpt: He notices there is writing on the paper. "Oh, the poem, you could not finish Magos." Magellan begins reading the poem. "The book to be, is the one to be written. Just as the cat to be, comes from the kitten. For the way has been shown by the light. The law of nature is within sight." "For it comes fast like the wind. It has a beginning, but is there an end? Evil can be defeated, once truth comes and is seated." "Call on the power up high. To come shine light through the sky. Known as the power and when spoken, comes out of the darkness, webs to be broken." Journey to the island of Nevis in 1806 and explore the life of a wizard's apprentice. Magos the Wizard appoints Magellan to be his apprentice, believing Magellan has the potential to exceed him in tapping into the magic wand's capabilities. And through a series of adventures, Magellan learns the true purpose of the magic wand.

But everything changes when reports of three kidnapped children reach the Greystone kids, and they’re shocked by the startling similarities between themselves and these complete strangers. The other kids share their same first and middle names. They’re the same ages. They even have identical birthdays. Who, exactly, are these strangers? Before Chess, Emma, and Finn can question their mom about it, she takes off on a sudden work trip and leaves them in the care of Ms. Morales and her daughter, Natalie. But puzzling clues left behind lead to complex codes, hidden rooms, and a dangerous secret that will turn their world upside down. Book excerpt: High adventures across Earth’s most strategic continent Result of 15 years of research and writing, W. Harold Fuller’s latest book comes out as the world’s spotlight swings from the West to Asia. Third in his “Sun Triad,” Fuller’s 12th book reflects 50 years of editing and writing, as well as leading seminars on six continents. Fuller was a founding member of the Association of Evangelicals of Africa, vice-chair of World Evangelical Alliance, executive member of Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), and member of Secretaries of Christian Communities (Geneva) as well as correspondent for The Christian Herald, Christianity Today, and others. (See also Run While the Sun is Hot, 1967 (Africa) and Tie Down the Sun, 1990 (South America). Fuller was editor-in-chief of African Challenge, SIM’s SIM Now, and several vernacular publications. Moody Press selected his first travelog, Run While the Sun Is Hot, for its Book of the Month Club (1968). In 1991, EFC awarded first prize to his second travelog, Tie Down the Sun. EFC’s magazine, Faith Today, also awarded Fuller its 1996 Leslie K. Tarr Award “in recognition of outstanding contribution to the field of Christian writing.” Sun Like Thunder combines historical research, missiological insight, and journalistic skill to impel readers through Asia’s revolutionary history and the gospel’s regenerating impact to unwrap Asia’s mysteries. With honesty, he handles such topics as Islam, cross-cultural missions, and the Far East’s rising competition with the West. Many surprises challenge reader preconceptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineteenth century folklorists, and the general public in their wake, have assumed the orality of fairy tales. Only lately have more and more specialists been arguing in favour of at least an interdependence between oral and printed distribution of stories. This book takes an extreme position in that debate: as far as Tales of magic is concerned, the initial transmission proceded exclusively through prints. From a historical perspective, this is the only viable approach; the opposite assumption of a vast unrecorded and thus inaccessible reservoir of oral stories, presents a horror vacui. Only in the course of the nineteenth century, when folklorists started collecting in the field and asked their informants for fairy tales, was this particular genre incorporated into a then feeble oral tradition. Even then story tellers regularly reverted to printed texts. Every recorded fairy tale can be shown to be dependent on previous publications, or to be a new composition, constructed on the basis of fragments of stories already in existence. Tales of magic, tales in print traces the textual history of a number of fairy tale clusters, linking the findings of literary historians on the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries to the material collected by nineteenth- and twentieth-century field workers. While it places fairy tales as a genre firmly in a European context, it also follows particular stories in their dispersion over the rest of the world.
