Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greek People, an Elementary History of Greece The plan of this book is not only to present a simple outline of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece, but also to picture the customs of the people, their manner of living and thinking and feeling. So far as the size and scope of the little volume will permit, the names of those who were masters in art and literature are introduced, not in separate chapters as mere adjuncts to political history, but in their natural connection with the annals of their times, and ever in accordance with Plutarch's dictum, Often an action of small note, a short saying or a jest, shall distinguish a person's real character more than the greatest sieges or the most important battles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greek People, an Elementary History of Greece The plan of this book is not only to present a simple outline of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece, but also to picture the customs of the people, their manner of living and thinking and feeling. So far as the size and scope of the little volume will permit, the names of those who were masters in art and literature are introduced, not in separate chapters as mere adjuncts to political history, but in their natural connection with the annals of their times, and ever in accordance with Plutarch's dictum, "Often an action of small note, a short saying or a jest, shall distinguish a persons real character more than the greatest sieges or the most important battles." In treating of the wars of Greece, I have followed their course as briefly as possible, and have given the space often allotted to details of battles to characteristic stories of some of the famous leaders, or a description of some one military operation that illustrates the difference between ancient and modern ways of conducting such affairs. In short, I have used the wars to illustrate the people, and not the people to display the minutiae of the wars. The illustrations for the book are intended to put the reader into the spirit of the Greek world, and to aid the imagination in interpreting the text. They have been taken from a great variety of sources, in the majority of cases representing Greek art in the form of architecture, statuary, bas-reliefs, vase-paintings, and coins, which reveal something of the artistic genius and the wonderful versatility of this people. Book excerpt: This survey of ancient Greece introduces students to the myths of Icarus and Oedipus, as well as historical figures like Socrates and Alexander the Great. In The Story of the Greeks, historian and mythologist H. A. Guerber presents an engaging overview of ancient Greek life, from the earliest inhabitants of the Greek peninsula to its eventual conquest by Rome. Written specifically for students, Guerber focuses her narrative on significant individuals and the roles they played in history. She also covers important Greek myths and the meanings they had for the people of the time. From mythical origin stories to the founding and development of Greek city-states, Guerber tells of the Peloponnesian War and Spartan military domination; the great Athenian philosophers, Socrates and Plato; the rise of Macedon under Philip and his son Alexander the Great; Ancient Greek drama; the Olympic Games; the Colossus of Rhodes; and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greeks This elementary history of Greece is intended for supplementary reading or as a first history text-book for young pupils. It is therefore made up principally of stories about persons; for, while history proper is largely beyond the comprehension of children, they are able at an early age to understand and enjoy anecdotes of people, especially of those in the childhood of civilization. At the same time, these stories will give a clear idea of the most important events that have taken place in the ancient world, and, it is hoped, will arouse a desire to read further. They also aim to enforce the lessons of perseverance, courage, patriotism, and virtue that are taught by the noble lives described. A knowledge of ancient history, however superficial, is of very great value; and the classic legends are almost equally worth knowing, because of the prominent part they play in the world's literature. These tales make a deep impression on the minds of children, and the history thus learned almost in play will cling to the memory far more tenaciously than any lessons subsequently conned. Many children leave school unacquainted with any history except that of the United States; which, dealing with less simple and primitive times than that of Greece, is apt to be so unattractive that the child never afterwards reads any historical works. As it is intended to form, with the author's Outlines of Roman History, a complete elementary course in ancient history, it contains a brief introduction - indicating the relation of history to civilization in general, and referring to the primitive culture with which civilization may be said to begin. It also contains a preliminary sketch of the progress of civilization before the time of the Greeks among the ancient Oriental peoples. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek History Professor swoboda has won so high a rank among students of classical antiquity that it would be superfluous, and indeed presumptuous, for his translator to recall that distinguished scholar's excellent works to the memory of the learned reader; and the little History now presented in English dress, though addressed to a less academic audience, is fully equal to the author's reputation. It has the rare merits of succinctness and lucidity, however imperfectly these ex cellences may be conveyed in translation and in addition it brings the history of Greece down to the present day. To most readers the story of ancient Greece is a fairy tale from olden times, at best half romance, and severed by an im passable chasm from the reality of the modern age. This conception is thoroughly false; the history of the Greeks, like that of the Jews, to which it has manifold points of likeness, has passed without a break from the classical into the imperial, the medieval, and the modern eras, and bids fair to become no mean chapter in the story of the nations that has yet to be unfolded.
