More than 60 American divisions participated in the defeat of Germany in 1944-45. This is the story of one of the best of them, a division which fought continually from the Normandy beachhead to the banks of the Elbe River in the heart of Germany. Work Horse of the Western Front is as accurate and honest an account as the writer could make it under the circumstances. Waging war is an exacting business undertaken under conditions which make for confusion and “snafu.” The writer has taken the facts as he saw them, the bad as well as the good, with the conviction that he would slight the very real achievements of the Division if he attempted to present a saccharine picture of inevitable triumphs. The measure of a great fighting unit is not that it never runs into difficulties but that it minimizes its errors and gains by experience. By these standards, Old Hickory was a great division—as is evidenced by the caliber of the tasks it was called upon to perform.

Book excerpt: Few units in the U.S. Army can boast as proud a unit history as the Third Infantry Division; it fought on all of the Europe and North African fronts that American soldiers were engaged against the Axis forces during World War II. The 3rd Infantry Division saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria for 531 consecutive days. In this official division history written by the officers who served with the unit at the time serves as a fascinating memorial and a detailed history of the “Marne Division” during World War II. The 3rd Inf. Division made landfall in Fedala on the 8th November 1942 as part of Operation Torch during the Allied invasion of North Africa and was engaged in heavy fighting before the German and Italian troops were finally levered out of the continent. The division was back in the thick of the fighting in Sicily under the command of such famous leaders as Generals Lucien Truscott, Omar Bradley and George S. Patton. As part of General Mark Clark’s U.S. Fifth army it engaged in some of the bloodiest engagements of the Italian campaign at Salerno beaches, Volturno river, Monte Cassino and Anzio. Under their old division commander General Truscott they formed part of the force that landed in Southern France and battled into the heart of Germany before the eventual capitulation of the Nazi High command in 1945. Richly illustrated with maps and pictures throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of the United States Army's 34th Infantry Regiment, from March 1st, 1940, through September 2nd, 1945. The regiment's history is described in a journalistic format, with an emphasis on the 1st Battalion and 'B' Company. Within the 758 pages in Volume I and 710 pages in Volume II (both measuring 8.5 by 11 inches per page), is a compilation of thousands of pages of company clerks' "record of events" narratives for the twenty companies of the regiment. Over five thousand hours were required to research the thousands of pages of company, battalion, and regimental records held in the National Archives in St. Louis, Missouri, and College Park, Maryland. These narratives are the day-by-day, and at times the minute-by-minute actions of the regiment, from initial training starting in July 1940 through Japan's surrender on September 2nd, 1945. In addition to these narratives, personal memoirs of those that served with the regiment are also used. The regiment was reactivated in Camp Jackson, South Carolina, transferred to the Territory of Hawaii, and transferred again to Queensland, Australia; then it engaged in battles in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippine islands. During the five-year period, narratives describe how men were drafted, their basic training, their unit training, new stations, fighting, killing, being killed/wounded, and finally returning home. All of the narratives of the valor citations (Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor) are woven into the narratives. Sprinkled throughout the pages are other event narratives that directly or indirectly affected the regiment. In addition to all of the regimental narratives, the regiment's history before and after World War II can be found in the Prologue and Epilogue sections. Volume II of the two-volume set contains the eight appendices of Volume I. The first appendix contains over 580 pages of documentation: photographs, newspaper articles, maps, 34th Infantry Regiment documents, book excerpts, War Department documents, Naval deck logs, and 24th Infantry Division documents. Appendices two through eight contain the following: (2) United States Army Organization Units, (3) Army Table of Organization and Equipment, (4) 34th Infantry Regiment Commanders, (5) 34th Infantry Regiment Personal Citations, (6) 34th Infantry Regiment Casualties and Enemy Killed, (7) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Wounded and Injured, (8) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Dead and Missing.

Book excerpt: First published in 1946, this is an account of 71st Infantry Division’s role in World War II, it was activated on July 15, 1943 at Camp Carson, Colorado. After some time training in the U.S. the division arrived in France in February 1945, entering the line at Ratswiller on 11th March 1945. Thereafter the 71st pushed the German forces back all the way back to the Siegfried Line, capturing Pirmasens 21st March and capturing Bayreuth after bitter opposition on 16th April. The Division had the distinction of having advanced the furthest east of all the U.S. Army units, by which time it had fought numerous bloody engagements and being involved in the liberation of a sub-concentration camp at Gunskirschen.
