My experience tells me that it is the oldest and grandest of all arts. To tell the story then, in one small volume, of a subject which dates from Creation, is no easy matter, it would seem. My plan has been to be as concise as possible to keep the running note of theoretical and in strumental progress and development before the reader; also to be non-technical where plain language would answer. Mention has been made only of composers and matters, who and which have actually moved the art onwards; and, inasmuch as one topic alone of the subject - say Form or Orchestration, could not possibly be adequately treated in the space allotted for my entire story, I must be pardoned if I have seemed to slip away from important points. The difficulty has been to get away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Art of Music The following outline of the Evolution of Musical Art was undertaken, at the invitation of Mr. Kegan Paul, somewhere about the year 1884. Its appearance was delayed by the constantly increasing mass of data and evidence about the music of savages, folk music, and mediaeval music; and by the necessity of exploring some of the Obscure and neglected corners of the wide-spread story of the Art. And though the subject was almost constantly under consideration, with a few inevitable interruptions, the book was not completed till 1893. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music The author believes that he has consulted the best interests of the reader by making free use, not only of the facts published by the standard historians and biographers but also of the opin ions of those who are accepted authorities. He has, however, set forth his own opinions at some length, and the reader will readily distinguish them by the manner of their presentation. The chapter on Wagner and the Opera of our Future reaches forward into the region whose history is yet to be made, but it contains con elusions which the author hopes will appeal forcibly to all lovers, not only of truthful dra matic music, but of the divine art of song. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art-Music Readers: Book Two The second in the series of art-music Readers deals with well-established facts of music history but adds those gems of literature and painting which have become associated with the romance of the art. Song and story have ever traveled hand in hand. Charm ing pictures heighten the interest of a subject by firing the reader's imagination. The presence of the printed music in this book affords still another means of bringing the art itself before the student. For schoolroom purposes the character of the reading material is most important. The aim of the art-music Readers is, first of all, to make the text good literature. Pure, simple, direct, dignified and inspiring. It is pure because it contains the best forms of English expression; simple, because it uses familiar words in the most familiar way; direct, because it treats each subject without com plications; dignified, because it never descends to silly diction under the delusion that such expressions amuse and attract the young; inspiring, because it directs the thought to lofty themes and creates a desire for the best in art. The books will be read by art students of all ages with equal interest and profit. Hence, while the title, Second Reader, implies a continuous historic sequence, the material is so complete within itself that the books may be used in any order, and the interest created will be equally strong in all grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music: An Historical Sketch of the Changes in Musical Form I freely confess that I have chosen the second course, not from any lack of modesty, but because I believe that the presentation of history is a matter less of knowledge than of point of view. For this reason the invitation of the Radio Corporation attracted me particularly, as it gave me the opportunity of testing the soundness of the ideas developed in my book on Wagner and my pamphlet on The Nature of Tone in the larger field of music history as a whole. These lectures, which were given under the title of The History of Change in Music, are here presented in book form. While the title has been changed, the lec ture form has been retained because it gives the original layout of the material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers The only necessity for a preface to this little book is to explain that the work is not designed to take the place of text-books, works on harmony or thorough-bass, or those interesting lives of the great musicians which competent writers have given to us. Its object is only to interest young students in music in the technique of their art, and in the associations amid which great masters have worked. Only such rules of harmony are given as have a direct bearing upon the subject or composition under discussion, and these I have presented, after comparing them with standard authorities, in as simple a fashion as possible, relying upon any reader who is a thoughtful student progressing to technical study under a scientific instructor. Meanwhile some impetus and enthusiasm may be added, from reading this simple story of an art which all nations are in some fashion developing to-day, and which had its origin in an age that gave a significance to the victor crown of bay-leaves and laurel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of Music That the latest Histories of Music, which have been presented to the public in the desultory form of Lectures, ' do not meet the requirements of thoughtful readers has been asserted before now; and we have only to glance at such ao counts of concert and operatic performances as are interspersed with historical notices and re marks to be assured that the sources of informa tion accessible to the public at large flow neither freely nor clearly. Whether, and in what degree, the present Work has attained the end desired, I am not qualified to form an opinion; I beg merely to offer this assurance to the reader, that I have steadfastly and carefully kept in view the progressive development of Art, and instead of crowding the pages of this little book with bio graphical anecdotes cheaply collected, or names and titles of books, have strictly excluded every thing superfluous. SO inseparably related are music and art to each other, that it would be difficult to consider either by itself. At the same time I must add that a work of this nature would have been of great help to me when I was a young student of music. Text-books contain such a mass of detail that it is next to impossible for the beginner to get any conception whatsoever of the general principles of the art of composition. He plods up the rocky slopes of Parnassus, catching at every ledge, bruised with falls, foot-sore and weary, to be rewarded with a vision of the antres vast and deserts idle only when he has scaled the heights and reached the top. These pages give a brief description of the paths that lead to this desirable summit; but do not imagine, casual reader, that the perusal of this book will make you a composer. At best, it is but a captive balloon from which you can snatch a bird's eye view of the panorama nearest you. The wings of the eagle alone can soar into the blue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Mastersingers: Studies in the Art of Music I remember as though it were yesterday my first introduction to that organ-loft and to, the unique personality associated with it - an occa sion that was to influence so much my musical life and my associations with the cathedral. I was, I suppose, about sixteen years Old, a devotee of music, a player on keyed instruments of some twelve years' standing (or sitting), filled beforehand with veneration for the talents of the great man whom, by the introduction of a friendly ecclesiastical official, I was about to meet. It was a Sunday afternoon; and as I sat in the loft on the rood-screen looking at the four rows of yellow keys and the ranks of mellow ivory draw stops with their beautiful sound-suggesting names of Diapason, Dulciana, Suabe Flute, Gamba Keraulophon, Dulcet, Clarion, Tuba Mirabilis. But, inasmuch as it is still in demand in Germany, as is proved by the publication of the Fifth Edition as recently as in 1875, and looking to the great extension of the study and practice of music in our own country, I am persuaded that it will be read both with interest and with profit in England. The tones of the diatonic scale which they seem to have known, but whose importance as basis of a musical system they did not appreciate, were divided into semi tones, and these in their turn into other semi tones, quarter-tones, and yet smaller divisions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Music A Few words concerning the origin of this book are necessary. It was already begun during an illness in 1892, and arrangements were made for its publication. But upon further investigation, especially of the early MSS., I perceived that the wealth of most valuable material still unexamined was far greater than I had suspected; so great, in fact, as to modify my previous opinions concerning English music in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. What I had previously written had largely to be rejected, and the whole plan of the work was altered; while three years' study has been necessary before I could let the book be printed. A variety of accidents unfortunately prevented a systematic comparison of every proof-sheet with the original sources of information, a test I had intended to apply; should any mistakes have arisen thereby, they will be duly published as they are discovered, and corrected in future editions. The main hindrance, in this and other respects, has, of course, been my living away from London and the other great repositories of MSS.; but I am able in consequence to have a clearer view of the condition of music in the whole country, of our defects and their causes, than I should probably have acquired had I been a London musician, when it would have been difficult or impossible for me to perceive the effects of centralisation upon our musical life. A minor but a very real hindrance has been the unsystematic indexing of many important publications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
