Book excerpt: Jaime Valance is a "Striker"-the prosecutors at DOJ known as " the Cowboys of the Justice Department." Those mostly young men and women crippled the traditional Mafia in the 1970s-1990s utilizing undercover operations and RICO prosecutions. Valance works out of Strike Force 18, based in Washington D.C. He travels widely throughout the nation, with investigations and trials in various locales. These trials are vividly and humorously detailed throughout the book. After an FBI conference in Florida in January 1986, Valance returns only to watch the Space Shuttle Challenger break up and plunge into the Atlantic, killing the entire crew-including the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe. This shocks him to the core, and he leaves the Air & Space Museum vowing to do something about it, declaring "Hold On! I'm Coming!" He volunteers and is appointed Staff Counsel for the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident (a.k.a. The Rogers Commission). Valance takes this Challenger plunge compelled by his philosophy and directive in life-"Chaos*Fate*Life*Courage*Spirit." The various choices the Cosmos presents to Valance cause him to arrive at the point in space-time where he ends up as one of the key players in the Challenger mystery. This includes a strong plot line involving Sabra Shannon, the love of Jaime's life. An intense romance which, unbeknownst to Valance, the mob is desperately trying to sabotage-for nefarious reasons. The Challenger investigation includes characters that were are the actual well known players in that drama: Former Attorney General and Secretary of State William Rogers, First Man Neil Armstrong, First Woman Sally Ride, Astronauts Brewster Shaw and John Fabian, physicist Richard Feynman, and other charismatic and unique individuals. The book details the political pressure and intrigue that occurs, the surprising negligence of NASA, and the personal sacrifices and grief of the families of the Challenger 7. Plus it delves deeply into the working relationships and friendships formed by Valance and the Commissioners and staff investigators. The respect and talent shared by Valance and his compatriots re-enforces his strong belief in his philosophy.

Dirk Pitt, the sea-loving protagonist of 22 of Cussler's novels, remains among the most popular and influential adventure series heroes of the past half-century. This first critical review of Cussler's work features an overview of Pitt and the supporting characters and other heroes, an examination of Cussler's themes and influences, a review of his most important adventures, such as Raise the Titanic! and Iceberg, and a look at adaptations of his work in other media. Cussler joins the pantheon of such as Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Ian Fleming, and this overdue volume demonstrates that beneath Cussler's immense popularity lies a literary depth that well merits scholarly attention.

Book excerpt: It was during the turbulent decade of World War I that the intensely gifted and beautiful Harriet Cohen established herself as a pianist. Enjoying huge success in her professional life, she was the first person outside the Soviet Union to play the music of the modern Soviet composers and was a huge success in America and throughout Europe. Her beauty and talent made her one of the most talked-about and photographed musicians of her day. Yet it was in her private life that the story of this extraordinarily talented young woman becomes one of the greatest love stories of all time. Her passionate love affair with the composer Sir Arnold Bax spanned more than 30 years. Their infatuation was played out against the backdrop of World War I, and was peppered with betrayal, lust, and tragedy. Their letters, published here for the first time, are among the most explicit of any written during that time and are staggering in their passion and poetry. Brilliant author Helen Fry tells for the first time the remarkable story of this forgotten woman. Music and Men tells of Harriet Cohen’s friendships—and relationships—with leading figures from every walk of life, from George Bernard Shaw to D.H. Lawrence and H.G. Wells, Sir Edward Elgar, Albert Einstein, Arnold Bennett, Vaughan Williams, Ramsey MacDonald, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Offering an insight into the politics, arts, and culture of the day, this incredible new biography tells the poignant story of a beautiful, possessive, flirtatious, and determined musician.
