Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Some English Shires The present volume, the Story of Some English Shires, ' was originally published by the Religious Tract Society in the year 1897. It then appeared in two forms, as an Edition de Luxe, and as a handsome illustrated volume in royal quarto. Both of these editions were sold out immediately after publication, and the book has long been out of print. But there is a strong feeling that, since the work is of permanent literary and historical value, and is from the pen of one of the recognized masters of English history, it should be issued again in permanent library form. In order to meet this suggestion the book has been reprinted as the reader now has it. The contents are the same as the previous issue, except that a chapter on the county of Cambridge has been added. It was Dr. Creighton's purpose to tell in like manner the story of all the English Shires; but unhappily the manifold duties of his great position prevented him from doing more, since 1897, in the way of completing his great plan than the writing of this one new chapter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in Short Stories This little book is not designed to be a History of England. It is, first, a compendium of facts about England, its history, government, and antiquities, - facts which all English-speaking people ought to know, and which are not readily accessible to those Americans who do not have good libraries at hand. It contains, secondly, a series of sketches of each of the English monarchs; not histories of their reigns or complete biographies, but estimates of the historical importance of each. The English kings previous to the Hanoverians are the central figures of English history. The dates and other facts here given have been collated with the greatest care. The intelligent reader need not be informed that Freeman, J. R. Green, Pearson, and others are entirely reconstructing English history, and fresh estimates of men and events are resulting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Counties of England, Vol. 1 of 2: Their Story and Antiquities The genesis of this book is the long series of volumes which for several years we have been producing, entitled the Memorials of the Counties of England. Some thirty volumes have been published, with the aid of patient and accomplished editors and of skilled and devoted antiquaries, who have carefully studied the history and archaeological remains in each shire. The main interest taken in our series has been principally local, each volume appealing to the patriotic residents in the county of which that volume treated. It has been deemed advisable to extend that interest, to widen our field of vision, and to gather together in this work the historical annals of all the English counties, recording their characteristics and touching upon those great events in their story which connect them with the history of the nation. It has been necessary to compress much, to touch lightly upon great subjects, which would require a volume for their complete elucidation, to give a sketch rather than to paint a complete picture. The sketch, however, has some advantages. It enables the reader to obtain a general view, and prevents him from complaining that he is unable to see the forest because of the trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victoria History of the Counties of English: Bedfordshire Rich as every county of England is in materials for local history, there has hitherto been no attempt made to bring all these materials together into a coherent form. Although from the seventeenth century down to quite recent times numerous county histories have been issued, they are very unequal in merit; the best of them are very rare and costly; most of them are imperfect and all are now out of date. Moreover they were the work of one or two isolated scholars, who, however able, could not possibly deal adequately with all the varied subjects which go to the making of a county history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten English Counties The following pages contain the chronicle of a journey by road taken through ten English counties. To the writer it seems that there can hardly be a pleasanter mode of spending a summer holiday than by driving about our own beautiful country, beyond the customary tourist's haunts, and out of the beaten track of travel, resting at the homely and homelike old-fashioned inns on the way, that still, the fates be praised, may be found scattered over the land, and what is more to the point, make the wayfarer exceedingly comfortable. To those in search of a quiet holiday without dulness, and who object to crowded watering-places and the bustle of ordinary travel, a driving tour offers manifold advantages; the constant change of scene it provides keeps the attention always pleasantly occupied, whilst there 15 ever a feeling of delightful expectancy as to what each fresh bend of the road may reveal, so that anything approaching to ennui is impossible. And the rural folk one meets with from time to time are an interesting study in themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
