Book excerpt: Christian Romance Novels consist of 3 books: Marcia Schuyler Phoebe Deane Miranda This Christian romance trilogy is written by Grace Livingston Hill. Marcia Schuyler A picture of ideal girlhood set in the time of full skirts and poke bonnets. Phoebe Deane "When the fates endowed Phoebe Deane with a love of beauty and a delicate refinement that craved books, and a pleasant environment, they offset their kindness by leaving her, orphaned in a New York State farmhouse, a drudge dependent on the bounty of her half-brother and his sharp-tongued wife. But she is rescued from her unhappy situation by her faith in love and life. Many of the characters we met and loved in Marcia Schuyler appear again in this book. Miranda Miranda is happy working in the house of her beloved friends David and Marcia Spafford, even though deep down in her heart there is a longing for Allan Whitney, a young man whom she had rescued from hanging many years before. He had disappeared, but she felt that he would some day return for her. At last she finds him and is able to help him in that great movement, the occupation of Oregon when threatened by English rule. Here Miranda leads her rivals and other plotters a spirited chase, enjoying herself immensely all the while. A charming romance, centering around a girl whose opportunities for education have been limited, but whose character is unique in its combination of strength and beauty.

Book excerpt: This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica.

Book excerpt: Written in three parts, War Trilogy is a dazzling and anarchic exploration of social relations which offers thought-provoking ideas on our perceptions of humanity, history, violence, art and science. The first part follows a writer who travels to the small, uninhabited island of San Simon, where he witnesses events which impel him on a journey across several continents, chasing the phantoms of nameless people devastated by violence. The second book is narrated by Kurt, the fourth astronaut who secretly accompanied Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their mythical first voyage to the moon. Now living in Miami, an ageing Kurt revisits the important chapters of his life: from serving in the Vietnam War to his memory of seeing earth from space. In the third part, a woman embarks on a walking tour of the Normandy coast with the goal of re-enacting, step by step, the memory of another trip taken years before. On her journey along the rugged coastline, she comes across a number of locals, but also thousands of refugees newly arrived on Europe's shores, whose stories she follows on the TV in her lodgings.
