Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Life Assurance I find it extremely fascinating. Sir Walter Besant advised authors to acquire a special knowledge of one subject, and write on that subject. That's what I did nearly 20 years ago, and I have been writing about Life Assurance ever since. In fact, I have had neither time nor desire to write upon any other subject for I regard Life Assurance as the greatest movement in the world for uplifting humanity. I have written some thousands of articles about it, and many books for the benefit of Agency workers - for the men who secure the business. But I have long cherished an idea of writing a popular account of Life Assurance, and for many months I have been engaged in the intervals of a harassing editorial life in trying to put my idea into practice. The Story of Life Assurance is not a large book, but large enough for the average man to digest. A famous author was once asked to write a biography of Napoleon in 36 pages for an encyclopedia. Thirty-six pages he exclaimed, the thing is impossible give me 36 volumes 1 The same difficulty confronts the man who would write a history of Life Assurance. Mine is not a history, but it traces the rise and progress of Life Assurance, and describes its advantages in a style more fascinating than a novel, and certainly more useful There are no diagrams in it, or mathematical formulae. The Story is a book, not for a day, but for all time. Whoever picks it up will, I venture to think, read it through from beginning to end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Life Assurance For life assurance is above all things an economic arrangement - the great problem which it has set out to overcome is that of the economic disturbances which the natural uncertainty of life brings in its train. I say natural uncertainty, because that is after all the crucial matter; the kind or even the degree of the dangers which accentuate that natural uncertainty, whether they be the Stiletto or the live electric wire, is, Within limits, unimportant. True it is that a point may be conceived Where these incidental dangers become so great as to put life assurance out of the question, but it is not certain that if the perils of life in general were augmented by fifty per cent. To morrow the extent of the practice would be materially affected. If then what is really In question is a remedy for a matter which has ever been before men's eyes, how is it that the discovery of that remedy has been so long delayed? Or has the need been met in earlier times in some different manner? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Insurance The "Yale Lectures on Life Insurance" appeared five years ago. Although a considerable edition was printed, the unexpectedly large demand soon exhausted it, and as the plates were destroyed, for two years the lectures have been out of print. It seems desirable that either a new edition of the lectures should be printed, or that something new should be published in their place. The latter alternative has been chosen, and instead of simply reprinting the old lectures, the plan has been adopted of selecting special readings, partly from the "Yale Lectures," partly from other sources. This plan was preferred for two reasons. In the first place, many changes have taken place in the insurance business since the old lectures were given, and much new and valuable material has appeared. In the second place, it has been thought that by not confining the readings to the old lectures a more comprehensive treatment could be secured. In this way it has been hoped to broaden the scope of the new readings, and thus to increase their usefulness. Only four of the lectures included in the old volume are reprinted, and three of these have been partly rewritten. Some of the matter now published has never appeared before, and much of the remainder has been revised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Life Insurance in the United States to 1870: With an Introduction to Its Development Abroad In the early history Of life insurance four primary stages of development may be distinguished. The first of these may be called the period Of experiment. It extends from the earliest beginnings down to the year 1700. During this time the prac tice Of keeping mortality records originated, and the funda mental laws Of probability were evolved and applied to the valuation of human life. Underwriting was done by indivi duals, and toward the end Of the period some distribution Of risk was accomplished by the insurers, since it became custom ary to accept but a small portion of each one of a number of separate hazards. The second stage may be designated the speculative assessment period.' It extends from 1700 to 1721, and is distinguished by the fact that assessment associations Of a highly speculative nature were formed for effecting life insurance. The third period, from 1721 to 1760, may be termed the era of scientific progress, since it is characterized by the progress made in the science of life contingencies. The fourth and last epoch, from 1760 to 1800, is One in which the advent of modern life insurance occurred. It was during this time that insurance for the whole of life on an annual level premium basis, and with a reserve fund to meet liabilities in creasing with advancing age, was put into practical operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Life Insurance Owing to these peculiar considerations, the study of the science of life insurance has been attended by greater difficulties than the study of other branches of insurance. Fortunately the statistics of hazards of lives are more complete than any other statistics employed in insurance. Without complete and tolerably accurate vital statistics, it would be a dangerous speculation to attempt to estimate the hazards of lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Insurance: A d104book The preparation of this text was undertaken at the suggestion of the National Association of Life Underwriters. In making the suggestion, the Association was actuated by the desire for a comprehensive textbook adapted to the needs of classroom instruction for beginners of the study of life insurance in colleges and high schools; one which would also serve as a clear and simple exposition of the subject for laymen and life insurance solicitors. To fulfill this purpose it has been the authors object to bring together in compact and classified form the essential facts, principles and practices of the life-insurance business, and to present them in a simple and untechnical manner. The book does not attempt to discuss the highly technical aspects of the business, such as the specialist may desire; instead its purpose is to treat comprehensively those phases concerning which the average student, layman and solicitor should be informed in order to have a clear understanding of the nature of life insurance and the family, personal and business uses to which it may be put. The thirty-two chapters of the text have been grouped into five distinct parts, dealing respectively with the "Nature and Uses of Life Insurance," the "Science of Life Insurance," "Special Forms of Life Insurance," the "Organization, Management and Supervision of Legal Reserve Companies," and "Important Legal Phases of Life Insurance." The first part of the volume is devoted to a discussion of the practical uses to which life insurance may be applied. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the leading types of policies sold, with a view to giving a detailed analysis of the contracts and an extended statement of the advantages and disadvantages connected with their use under various circumstances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selling Life Insurance This book has been written for the sole purpose of presenting in a simple and straightforward manner the most modern and most effective practices in life under writing. The underlying plan of this book follows very closely the course in Practical Salesmanship given by the writer while Director of the School of Life Insurance Salesmanship at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A careful reading and study Of the book will show very clearly the underlying theory of the strategy of selling. However, the major emphasis is placed upon selling suggestions, selling plans, and methods of pro cedute which have proved highly successful in life underwriting. The book may be used as a textbook in schools of life insurance salesmanship, in the weekly meetings of local agencies, and as a basal or reference text in correspond ence courses. Also, the writer has constantly had in mind another group of readers and users-the men who are selling life insurance every day and who do not have the opportunity of obtaining help, other than that which they can give themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Investments of Life Insurance Companies After 1800 companies began to be organised to carry on the business of life insurance. Up to 1835, no com pany was organised and succeeded which had for its sole purpose the insuring of lives, but three important trust companies of the present day were incorporated be tween 1812 and 1833 which had the power among others of insuring lives. All three for some time did do a small life insurance business. In addition to these three trust and insurance companies combined, a num ber of the more prominent fire insurance companies did some Writing of life insurance. However, all the companies were proprietary companies organised chiefly for other purposes than life insurance and so far as they influenced life insurance history in this country did little more than to prove definitely that insurance of lives could be carried out as a business proposition. The thirty-five years following 1800 can best be designated as the experimental period in the business in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Assurance Primer: A Text-Book, Dealing With the Practice and Mathematics of Life Assurance, for Advanced Schools, Colleges and Universities The only criticism of any consequence which has been made against the Primer is that it is not sufficiently elementary. But the book was not written for children; nor was it prepared for those who, with merely a general education, could read it through at a sitting, and at once understand it all. It was meant to be a study for men, willing and able to devote time to a careful reading, and anxious to obtain true knowledge of the subject to the extent of taking pains to digest it, and even to read other col lateral publications. Life Assurance is a source of unbounded blessing to men; even more so to women and children. But knowledge of the subject does not enter our minds intuitively; itcan only be acquired by diligence. And it would be well if this social obligation were made part of the general school training. One of the commonest errors is to assume that life assurance is an investment, and that premiums paid for protection are like deposits in a savings bank. It is difficult to convince many men, even intelligent men, who have paid for life assurance for ten years and who have lived, that their premiums should not all be held by the Company increased by interest. Yet if this were so the heirs of those who died could only get the amount of their own premiums, with interest, less expenses; while we know that the full amount assured is paid even if death take place only a few days after payment of the first premium. This is the funda mental difference between a savings bank and a life assurance company. If such general principles were known more widely, many would avoid those disappointed expectations which have caused so much heartburning.
