Book excerpt: The Story Of Kennett Volume 1 By Bayard Taylor At noon, on the first Saturday of March, 1796, there was an unusual stir at the old Barton farm-house, just across the creek to the eastward, as you leave Kennett Square by the Philadelphia stage-road. Any gathering of the people at Barton's was a most rare occurrence; yet, on that day and at that hour, whoever stood upon the porch of the corner house, in the village, could see horsemen approaching by all the four roads which there met." Book excerpt: Meanwhile, the wonderful glamour of her presence--that irresistible influence which at once takes hold of body and spirit--had entered into every cell of his blood. Thought and memory were blurred into nothingness by this one overmastering sensation. Riding through the lonely woods, out of shade into yellow, level sunshine, in the odors of minty meadows and moist spices of the creekside, they twain seemed to him to be alone in the world. If they loved not each other, why should not the leaves shrivel and fall, the hills split asunder, and the sky rain death upon them? Here she moved at his side--he could stretch out his hand and touch her; his heart sprang towards her, his arms ached for very yearning to clasp her, --his double nature demanded her with the will and entreated for her with the affection!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Kennett is a novel by American author Bayard Taylor. Taylor was a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular focus on travel writing. For this novel Taylor has taken his skills in travel writing and applied them to his own hometown of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which serves as the backdrop for this story. The Story of Kennett is exactly that - a novel about life in rural Pennsylvania in the 1900's. Taylor tells a fictionalized story that clearly draws its inspiration from real people and places. This is a book about country life and country drama and the characters that populate this world. The author gives us a front row seat at a Quaker meeting, details a barn raising, and invites us to both a country wedding and a funeral. A talented author, Taylor's writing places a great deal of emphasis on the environment, from the buildings to the animals to the countryside itself. In this way the essence the story also provides a scenic ride around the area in which the author grew up. Download or read book The Story of Kennett, and Who Was She? written by Bayard Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayard Taylor (James) (1825-1878) was an American poet and writer. A little volume, published at Philadelphia in 1844 under the title Ximena; or, The Battle of the Sierra Morena and Other Poems, brought its author a little cash; and indirectly it did him better service as the means of his introduction to The New York Tribune. With the money and an advance made to him on account of some journalistic work to be done in Europe, he set sail for the East. The graphic accounts which he sent from Europe to The New York Tribune, The Saturday Evening Post, and The United States Gazette were so highly appreciated that on Taylor's return to America he was advised to throw his articles into book form. In 1846 appeared his Views A-Foot; or, Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff. In 1851, he travelled to Egypt and towards the end of 1852; he sailed for Calcutta, proceeding thence to China, where he joined the expedition of Commodore Perry to Japan. His works include: The Story of Kennett (1866) and Beauty and the Beast (1872).

Download or read book The Island Chumash written by Douglas J. Kennett and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonized as early as 13,500 years ago, the Northern Channel Islands of California offer some of the earliest evidence of human habitation along the west coast of North America. The Chumash people who lived on these islands are considered to be among the most socially and politically complex hunter-gatherers in the world. This book provides a powerful and innovative synthesis of the cultural and environmental history of the chain of islands. Douglas J. Kennett shows that the trends in cultural elaboration were, in part, set into motion by a series of dramatic environmental events that were the catalyst for the unprecedented social and political complexity observed historically.
