Book excerpt: Between 19 February and 13 August 1915, Zoe Akins, still in the early years of a long and varied writing career that included poetry, fiction, Broadway plays, Hollywood screenplays, and a Pulitzer Prize for drama, wrote a series of twenty-three weekly essays on the new American poetry entitled In the Shadow of Parnassus: A Critical Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry for the prestigious urban weekly, Reedy's Mirror. In this lively, distinctive, intelligent, and wonderfully readable series she reviewed the work of over sixty contemporary poets - Robert Frost, Vachel Lindsay, Amy Lowell, Edgar Lee Masters, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Edward Arlington Robinson, Ezra Pound, and Sara Teasdale among them - members of a generation of writers whose innovative experiments continue to shape our poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermittent Streams is a reflection of the authors thirst for the Livng Water, which provided strength and sacramental grace to live out his calling (vocation). Every person is called by God to fill a co-creative relationship and live out this vocation through drinking from the Lords cup of Living Water. The reader will enter dialogue with God and him or her selves through reviewing the living Word of Scriptures which reach out to all of Creation the love, understanding, and divine mercy of the Divine Father. Man was created in Gods image and likeness. God also gave man a free-will to either accept or reject this divine calling. The chapters cover the uniqueness of the human being which God created and equipped him/her with VISION and Memory with which to serve God and neighbor; through these special God given human/divine senses through which require communication and Befriending. The reader will become informed as to the role of every Baptized Christian; that is of a Spiritual Guide. This term is inherent with any calling by God. We all share, to some degree responsibility of Befriending even those in our own homes. To this end a complete description of Faithing and Befriending will be utilized in the formation process of the Spiritual Guide. The author concludes with 29 Stories for the use of individuals or groups of individuals in home group meetings. This Faithing process is also covered. The book closes with 10 groups of spiritual direction questions; which again can be done individually or in small groups at home.
Book Synopsis Ozarks Fiddle Music by : Drew Beisswenger
Download or read book Ozarks Fiddle Music written by Drew Beisswenger and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which includes 308 tune transcriptions, is organized around individual fiddlers who typically combine Appalachian-style fiddling with rags, pop standards, Midwest-style fiddling and sometimes a touch of Western swing to create a style often identifiable as Ozarks. Thirty Ozarks fiddlers and their lives are highlighted with biographical sketches, photographs, and tune histories. Another 50 great Ozarks fiddlers are presented in a similar manner but with less detail. the book and accompanying CD (with 37 tunes, many recorded in the field) emphasize the older fiddling traditions connected to the square dances and community events more than those connected to bluegrass music and modern contest fiddling. Some of the tunes in the collection are old standbys such as Bile Them Cabbage while others such as Finley Creek Blues are unique to the region. The book is the result of years of work by two respected researchers. Gordon McCann won the prestigious Missouri Arts Award in 2002 for his decades of work documenting, studying, and accompanying Ozarks fiddle music. Drew Beisswenger, a music librarian at Missouri State University with a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, has published three other works about fiddle music and is known for his strong transcription and analysis skills.
