Board of Education in 1954, the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, and the desegregation of Little Rock (Arkansas) High School in 1957. It was during this period--1955 to be exact--that sociologist Alfred M. Lee published his seminal work Fraternities without Brotherhood: A Study of Prejudice on the American Campus. Lee's book was the first and last book to explore diversity within college fraternal groups. More than fifty years later, Craig L. Torbenson and Gregory S. Book excerpt: Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in America, was founded in 1789 by Archbishop John Carroll, SJ, as an academy for boys that was open to "Students of Every Religious Profession" and "every Class of Citizens." Carroll established the school on a hilltop overlooking the Potomac River, "delightfully situated" as Charles Dickens would observe several decades later. Georgetown welcomed its first student, William Gaston, in 1791 and was chartered by Congress in 1815, but by the time of the Civil War, when Federal troops occupied the campus, the school was on the brink of collapse. It was not until the presidency of Patrick F. Healy, SJ, in 1873 that Georgetown would recover and be set on a course to become a university, linking Georgetown College with professional schools of medicine and law. The early 20th century was marked by the founding of the schools of dentistry, nursing, foreign service, languages and linguistics, and business. Now among the top universities in America, Georgetown is continuously reinvigorated by teaching and scholarship dedicated to serving the nation and the world.

Sorority and fraternity teachings enforce different perceptions on what it means to experience sexual assault, but Bill and Kathy both know that the subject is to be approached casually-more commonly, to not be spoken about at all. Sitting Pretty explores the dynamic between men and women in the seventies, the differences in fraternity and sorority teachings, and finding solace in sisterhood. Rebecca Scherr is a fiction writer and a graduate of George Washington Carver Center for Art and Technology's Literary Arts program. At the age of seventeen, her short story, "Ladylike," was awarded first place in the international Jack London Writing Contest. Her poetry, short stories, and personal essays have also been recognized by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, where she has won several gold keys, silver keys, and honorable mentions. In her spare time, Scherr enjoys a cup of coffee, walks with her dog, Mock Trial, and an episode of reality television after a long day. While soft-spoken in everyday life, Scherr has future plans to become a lawyer and looks forward to exploring the bolder parts of herself both in the courtroom and on the page. Sitting Pretty is her first novel, but she is certain there will be plenty more of her fiction on the way.
