Book excerpt: Also known as Frithiofs Saga, the following work is an Icelandic saga that takes place principally in Norway during the 8th century. The story begins with King Beli of Sogn (a traditional district in Western Norway), who had two sons and a daughter named Ingeborg. Helgi was his first son, and Halfdan his second. On the other side of the fjord, lived the king's friend Thorstein (Þorsteinn Víkingsson) whose son Frithjof (Friðþjófur) was called the bold (hinn frœkni). Frithiof was the tallest, strongest and he was the bravest among men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his eclecticism, William Morris (1834-1896) was one of the most emblematic personalities of the nineteenth century. Painter, architect, poet and engineer, wielding the quill as well as the brush, he jolted Victorian society by discarding standards established by triumphant industry. His commitment to the writing of the Socialist Manifesto was the logical result of the revolution he personified in his habitat, the form of his design and the colours he used. Forerunner of twentieth-century designers, he co-founded with John Ruskin the Arts and Crafts movement. As an independent man, William Morris led the way to Art Nouveau and later Bauhaus. Through the essential body of his written and visual work, Arthur Clutton-Brock’s masterwork deciphers the narrow relationship between ideals and creation, as well as between evolution and revolution.

Book excerpt: The life of William Morris (1834-1896) is revealed in significant new detail by his complete surviving correspondence, brought together here for the first time and including many previously unpublished letters. This collection not only bears witness to Morris's day-to-day activities and friendships, but also reflects his keen response to landscape and architecture, his sense of social responsibility, and his interest in the techniques of the applied arts. Volume I covers Morris's student days at Oxford and marriage to Jane Burden; the first twenty years of Morris and Co.; his success as a poet with the publication of The Earthly Paradise; his two trips to Iceland; the moves to Kelmscott Manor and Kelmscott House; and the start of his socialist career. Book excerpt: Featuring twenty major works of European poetry over a period of a thousand years, this collection charts the development of verse from the fall of the Roman Empire to the birth of the Renaissance. Contrary to popular belief, the poetry of the Dark Ages enjoyed a pioneering development, exploring new metres and complex imagery. Throughout the Middle Ages, poetry adopted numerous forms across the continent, from the epic greatness of the ‘chanson de geste’ to the sublime lyrical qualities of love poetry. This eBook provides a rich sample of medieval poetry; from the earliest dawn of English literature to the unparalleled brilliance of Dante; from the courtly adventures of Arthurian legend to the stirring lays of the Vikings; from the Eastern magic of Georgia to the ribald genius of Chaucer; this collection will immerse you in the perilous, amusing and tantalising world of the Middle Ages. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to the poets’ lives and works * Concise introductions to the works * Most of the poems appear with their original medieval texts, as well as an English translation — ideal for students * Images of how the original manuscripts first appeared, giving your eReader a taste of the medieval texts * Excellent formatting of the poems * Easily locate the sections you want to read * Features three critical works on the development of medieval literature * Scholarly ordering of texts into chronological order Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to see our wide range of poet titles CONTENTS: Medieval Poetry Hymn by Cædmon (7th century) Christ II by Cynewulf (8th century) (Tr.
