John Waddington was asked by the newly-formed Surrey Congregational Union to prepare a history of its churches. Much history is made in half a century, especially in London and its vicinity, and for a long while it has been felt by the Union that the time had come to write anew the fascinating story. Three years ago the Executive entrusted the task into my hands. That task I have endeavoured to perform to the best of my ability. It has not been an easy work, but it has been a labour of love. Waddington in his preface refers to the great difficulty of obtaining full and authentic local information respecting our churches. I, too, have often found that only the baldest facts were accessible. But a greater difficulty still has been the task of selecting and condensing within some four hundred and fifty pages material enough to fill half a dozen similar volumes.
