Download or read book Villains written by Danny Brown and published by Milo Books Ltd. This book was released on 2008-02-10 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aston Villa is one of the biggest and best-supported football clubs in Britain, the giant from England's second city with a long and distinguished history, culminating in an unforgettable European Cup victory in 1982. The story of their terrace army, however, has never been told - until now. Like all major clubs, Villa have had their hooligans and hardmen, and have been involved in some of the fiercest battles of the past four decades. VILLAINS traces their gangs from the 1960's up to the present day. Through first-person testimony, it reveals for the first time the antics of the Steamers, who achieved nationwide infamy, led by a band of colourful and fearless characters such as Pete the Greek, who famously once headbutted a police horse and took on the Millwall leader in a one-on-one brawl. Eventually they were superseded by the C Crew, a multi-racial gang who brought together youths from different areas of Birmingham during the 2-Tone era. This was the heyday of hooliganism, and the Villa Park faithful clashed with the toughest and most violent mobs around, often led into battle by co-authors Paul Brittle and "Black" Danny Brown, who was jailed in 1981 for one of the most infamous football-related attacks. They went on riotous trips to Europe, fought at service stations and in nightclubs, and conducted bitter rivalries against foes from across the Midlands and beyond. The story is brought up to date with tales of the Villa Youth and accounts of the notorious Battle of McDonalds Island against their Birmingham City rivals the Zulus.

Book Synopsis CONIFA: Football for the Forgotten by : James Hendicott
Download or read book CONIFA: Football for the Forgotten written by James Hendicott and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book about football. Well, it is, in a sense, but it's also a book about overcoming the odds. About being rejected from the sporting mainstream, but fighting back. About training for an international tournament with only a single ball. It's about representing one country, but being forced to live your life in another. About finding sporting representation as a rank outsider; overcoming political superpowers to find a place. It's about scrambling a team together in a few weeks to represent millions of people, or fronting a multi-continental organization on a near-bankrupt shoestring because it's that important to your indigenous reindeer-herding Scandinavian ethnic minority that they have their own global, international outlet. Those last two paragraphs probably sound like hyperbole. I couldn't quite believe it either, but every word of them is real. Follow me on a journey down a footballing rabbit hole, where sport and politics mingle in glorious, positive harmony. This is CONIFA

Book Synopsis The Remarkable Story of Fred Spiksley by : Mark Metcalf
Download or read book The Remarkable Story of Fred Spiksley written by Mark Metcalf and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gainsborough’s Fred Spiksley was one of the first working class youngsters in 1887 to live ‘the dream’ of becoming a professional footballer, before later finding a role as a globe-trotting coach. He thus dodged the inevitability of industrial, poorly paid, dangerous labour. Lightning fast, Spiksley created and scored hundreds of goals including, to the great joy of the future Queen Mary who chased him down the touchline, three against Scotland in 1893. The outside left scored both Sheffield Wednesday’s goals in the 2-1 defeat of Wolves in the 1896 FA Cup Final at the Crystal palace. Forced by injury to stop playing at aged 36, Spiksley adventured out into the world. He acted with Charlie Chaplin, escaped from a German prison at the start of the First World War and later made the first ‘talking’ football training film for youngsters. As a coach/manager he won titles in Sweden, Mexico, the USA and Germany, becoming the last Englishman to coach a German title-winning team with 1FC Nuremburg in 1927. He coached in Barcelona in 1932 and it was only after his involvement had exceeded 50 years, during which time, as this book explains, the game changed dramatically, did Spiksley’s football career end. As an addicted gambler and womaniser, Spiksley had his problems away from football. However, he was beloved by his football fans, including Herbert Chapman, the greatest manager of that era in English football who, towards the end of his life, picked him in his finest XI.
