Book excerpt: We all know the stereotype of the Jewish mother: Hectoring, guilt-inducing, clingy as a limpet. In Mamaleh Knows Best, Tablet Magazine columnist Marjorie Ingall smashes this tired trope with a hammer. Blending personal anecdotes, humor, historical texts, and scientific research, Ingall shares Jewish secrets for raising self-sufficient, ethical, and accomplished children. She offers abundant examples showing how Jewish mothers have nurtured their children’s independence, fostered discipline, urged a healthy distrust of authority, consciously cultivated geekiness and kindness, stressed education, and maintained a sense of humor. These time-tested strategies have proven successful in a wide variety of settings and fields over the vast span of history. But you don't have to be Jewish to cultivate the same qualities in your own children. Ingall will make you think, she will make you laugh, and she will make you a better parent. You might not produce a Nobel Prize winner (or hey, you might), but you'll definitely get a great human being.

What memories came back to me with each page I read... you did a really fantastic job of gathering information to support the stories you wrote about. Memories are like th blind tribesmen coming back to the Village and telling about the big elephant they encountered in the bush... each has their own remembrances of the past and a personal story to tell." H. Laury Lepage "Just read the book cover to cover. I keep coming back to where I started. I think the whole thing is a treasure. I can't tell you how much enjoyment your efforts brought me." Bill Gee "The era we grew up in, where we learned about life, developed lasting friendships, and gave birth to those countless, delightful and not so delightful memories..." "I read the book in one sitting. I loved it. You captured the beauty of being raised in a blue collar community, next to a great lake, with many characters and so many fun stories and events." Marian Catania Yoder

Book excerpt: "Like an urban Dian Fossey, Wednesday Martin decodes the primate social behaviors of Upper East Side mothers in a brilliantly original and witty memoir about her adventures assimilating into that most secretive and elite tribe. After marrying a man from the Upper East Side and moving to the neighborhood, Wednesday Martin struggled to fit in. Drawing on her background in anthropology and primatology, she tried looking at her new world through that lens, and suddenly things fell into place. She understood the other mothers' snobbiness at school drop-off when she compared them to olive baboons. Her obsessional quest for a Hermes Birkin handbag made sense when she realized other females wielded them to establish dominance in their troop. And so she analyzed tribal migration patterns; display rituals; physical adornment, mutilation, and mating practices; extra-pair copulation; and more. Her conclusions are smart, thought-provoking, and hilariously unexpected. Every city has its Upper East Side, and in Wednesday's memoir, readers everywhere will recognize the strange cultural codes of powerful social hierarchies and the compelling desire to climb them. They will also see that Upper East Side mothers want the same things for their children that all mothers want--safety, happiness, and success--and not even sky-high penthouses and chauffeured SUVs can protect this ecologically released tribe from the universal experiences of anxiety and loss. When Wednesday's life turns upside down, she learns how deep the bonds of female friendship really are. Intelligent, funny, and heartfelt, Primates of Park Avenue lifts a veil on a secret, elite world within a world--the exotic, fascinating, and strangely familiar culture of privileged Manhattan motherhood"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of an East-Side Family But that was many years ago, when the Brooklyn Navy Yard was the hive of industry; a period when iron in Ship construction was merely to hold the great wooden bodies and wooden coats in place. The ferry at the foot of Jackson Street then plied its way, crowded night and morning, with the happy, contented men whose trade craft was at once their pride and protection. But the Old ferry stopped running years ago. A new skill was needed in ship construction, and the owners of the little houses were scattered. Many of them had adopted other trades, some had gone into Shop-keeping, some had sold their houses and bought little places in the country; some living elsewhere derived an income from the little houses now dropping to pieces, which they had not the money to repair. Five and even six families were living in space designed for one. The houses had grown Shabby and were but a degree better than the swarms of people who now called the shelter they gave home. It was an August evening when the people, even on this street so close to the river, had panted for breath all day. The pavements were hot to the feet. Some Of the men living in the little houses were sitting on the great blocks of marble and stone in the yard opposite, holding babies, watching children who were playing languidly about, the more energetic of them climbing the lumber piles. The women sat on the low wooden stoops with more babies and children under their half watchful care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Lower East Side has been home to some of the city's most iconic restaurants, shopping venues, and architecture. The neighborhood has also welcomed generations of immigrants, from newly arrived Italians and Jews to today's Latino and Asian newcomers. This history has become somewhat obscured, however, as the Lower East Side can appear more hip than historic, with wealth and gentrification changing the character of the neighborhood. Chronicling these developments, along with the hidden gems that still speak of a vibrant immigrant identity, Joyce Mendelsohn provides a complete guide to the Lower East Side of then and now. After an extensive history that stretches back to Manhattan's first settlers, Mendelsohn offers 5 self-guided walking tours, including a new passage through the Bowery, that take the reader to more than 150 sites and highlight the dynamics of a community of contrasts: aged tenements nestled among luxury apartment towers abut historic churches and synagogues. With updated and revised maps, historical data, and an entirely new community to explore, Mendelsohn writes a brand-new chapter in an old New York story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manhattan's Lower East Side stands for Jewish experience in America. With the possible exception of African-Americans and Harlem, no ethnic group has been so thoroughly understood and imagined through a particular chunk of space. Despite the fact that most American Jews have never set foot there--and many come from families that did not immigrate through New York much less reside on Hester or Delancey Street--the Lower East Side is firm in their collective memory. Whether they have been there or not, people reminisce about the Lower East Side as the place where life pulsated, bread tasted better, relationships were richer, tradition thrived, and passions flared. This was not always so. During the years now fondly recalled (1880-1930), the neighborhood was only occasionally called the Lower East Side. Though largely populated by Jews from Eastern Europe, it was not ethnically or even religiously homogenous. The tenements, grinding poverty, sweatshops, and packs of roaming children were considered the stuff of social work, not nostalgia and romance. To learn when and why this dark warren of pushcart-lined streets became an icon, Hasia Diner follows a wide trail of high and popular culture. She examines children's stories, novels, movies, museum exhibits, television shows, summer-camp reenactments, walking tours, consumer catalogues, and photos hung on deli walls far from Manhattan. Diner finds that it was after World War II when the Lower East Side was enshrined as the place through which Jews passed from European oppression to the promised land of America. The space became sacred at a time when Jews were simultaneously absorbing the enormity of the Holocaust and finding acceptance and opportunity in an increasingly liberal United States. Particularly after 1960, the Lower East Side gave often secularized and suburban Jews a biblical, yet distinctly American story about who they were and how they got here. Displaying the author's own fondness for the Lower East Side of story books, combined with a commitment to historical truth, Lower East Side Memories is an insightful account of one of our most famous neighborhoods and its power to shape identity.

Book excerpt: There was a time gone by yet not known to many of us, which is dredged up and recovered in East Side Stories; this was the time of the Great Depression. In this fictional account, twenty stories in all , we delve into the lives of immigrants and their families who lived in the tenements of the Lower East Side of New York City. There is the aged actor who sings and speaks in many voices; there is Orchard Street with its pushcarts; there is the story of a young woman faced with the dilemma of whether or not to agree to a marriage with a much older man, one who has a good steady job. We meet a woman, deserted by her husband, who lives with a gambler who promises to marry her. There is a story of two boys, one Jewish, the other Italian, whose algebra teacher's moods fluctuate up and down. And there is a woman ostracized by her neighbors. There is the story of the girl who hates herself and what she is. We meet an entrepreneur who plays every angle to keep his business afloat . Then there is the cross-eyed boy who feels cursed; and the gangsters from Murder Inc. who shoot dice on the street. There is the boy who pines for a girl who lives nearby. There are stories of events at a junior high school; another of a college student and his black friend, Earl, and their adventure in a Spanish class. There is more. And all in all they are a mosaic of those times and that place.
