Book excerpt: Sultan Jahan Begum (1858-1930), also known as Sultan Kaikhusrau Jahan Begum, was the last of four women nawabs (governors) who ruled the princely state of Bhopal during the British Raj. First established in central India in 1724, Bhopal was an independent state before it became a British protectorate in 1818. The state merged with independent India in 1949 and is now part of Madhya Pradesh. The rule of the begums, as this era of women rulers in Bhopal came to be known, started with Qudsia Begum in 1819, and ushered in a period of peace and coexistence between Muslims and Sikhs. Sultan Jahan Begum was a reformist ruler known for her work to advance public health and women's education. A devout Muslim, she embarked in 1903-4 on a hajj (pilgrimage) journey to visit the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Hijaz, a region in western Arabia that was at the time under Ottoman rule. This narrative, entitled The Story of a Pilgrimage to Hijaz, recounts the events of that journey, which first took the begum and her entourage by land to Bombay (present-day Mumbai), before they boarded a steamer that took them via Aden and Jiddah to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea. From there, the party travelled on camels under Turkish military protection to Medina and further to Mecca. Although the ascetic Sultan Jahan was not the first begum among the Bhopal royals to perform hajj (her grandmother Sikander Jahan Begum was the first to do so), she came back to lavish celebrations in her capital, where relics she brought with her from the holy cities were exhibited for the public to see and minarets were decorated and lit in her honor. Written in a straightforward style, her memoir is divided into "two books." The first contains geographic descriptions of Arabia, with accounts on the foundation of the holy mosques in Mecca and Medina, while the second deals with the official correspondence, events, and incidents relating to the journey. Sultan Jahan Begum kept a detailed record of the names of the people she met, the value of currencies she used, and the shrines and other historical monuments she visited in the birthplace of Islam, making her book of historical value. Many of the monuments she mentioned have now been lost due to the expansion of the two holy mosques and the state policy against the veneration of shrines.
Book Synopsis Imperial Mecca by : Michael Christopher Low
Download or read book Imperial Mecca written by Michael Christopher Low and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the steamship, repeated outbreaks of cholera marked oceanic pilgrimages to Mecca as a dangerous form of travel and a vehicle for the globalization of epidemic diseases. European, especially British Indian, officials also feared that lengthy sojourns in Arabia might expose their Muslim subjects to radicalizing influences from anticolonial dissidents and pan-Islamic activists. European colonial empires’ newfound ability to set the terms of hajj travel not only affected the lives of millions of pilgrims but also dramatically challenged the Ottoman Empire, the world’s only remaining Muslim imperial power. Michael Christopher Low analyzes the late Ottoman hajj and Hijaz region as transimperial spaces, reshaped by the competing forces of Istanbul’s project of frontier modernization and the extraterritorial reach of British India’s steamship empire in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. Imperial Mecca recasts Ottoman Arabia as a distant, unstable semiautonomous frontier that Istanbul struggled to modernize and defend against the onslaught of colonial steamship mobility. As it turned out, steamships carried not just pilgrims, passports, and microbes, but the specter of legal imperialism and colonial intervention. Over the course of roughly a half century from the 1850s through World War I, British India’s fear of the hajj as a vector of anticolonial subversion gradually gave way to an increasingly sophisticated administrative, legal, and medical protectorate over the steamship hajj, threatening to eclipse the Ottoman state and Caliphate’s prized legitimizing claim as protector of Islam’s most holy places. Drawing on a wide range of Ottoman and British archival sources, this book sheds new light on the transimperial and global histories traversed along the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrating the pilgrimage to Mecca discusses a wide variety of historical and contemporary personal accounts of the pilgrimage to Mecca, most of which presented in English for the first time. The book addresses how being situated in a specific cultural context and moment in history informs the meanings attributed to the pilgrimage experience. The various contributions reflect on how, in their stories, pilgrims draw on multiple cultural discourses and practices that shape their daily lifeworlds to convey the ways in which the pilgrimage to Mecca speaks to their senses and moves them emotionally. Together, the written memoirs and oral accounts discussed in the book offer unique insights in Islam’s rich and evolving tradition of hajj and ʿumra storytelling. Book Synopsis Christians at Mecca by : Augustus Ralli
Download or read book Christians at Mecca written by Augustus Ralli and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians at Mecca is a collection of narratives summarizing the journeys undertaken by 16 European travelers to the Muslim holy city, starting with Ludovico di Varthema, who visited in 1503, and ending with Jules Gervais-Courtellemont, who visited in 1894. The list also includes Vincent Le Blanc (1568), Johann Wild (1607), Joseph Pitts (1680), Domingo Badia y Leblich (also called Ali Bey, 1807), Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1809-10), Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1814-15), Giovanni Finati (1814), Léon Roches (1841-42), Georg August Wallin (1845), Sir Richard Burton (1853), Heinrich, Freiherr von Maltzan (1860), Herman Bicknell (1862), John Fryer Keane (1877-78), and Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1885). Accounts of the exploration of Arabia and Islam's "forbidden cities" became a genre that aroused considerable interest in Europe, especially during the 19th century. Christians at Mecca is a particularly useful volume, in that it summarizes and compiles nearly all such accounts in one work. The author, Augustus Ralli, wrote in the brief preface that he intended to "give a narrative of each pilgrim's adventures, and a summary of his observation of the people of Mecca and the condition of the city." Little is known about Ralli. It is unclear if he was related to the London-based Ralli Brothers, a successful Victorian-era merchant family of Greek origins. A scholar by the same name was born in London in 1875 and died in Bath in southwest England in 1954 and is thought to have written a number of books including Guide to Carlyle and A History of Shakespearian Criticism.
Book Synopsis The Begums of Bhopal by : Shaharyar M. Khan
Download or read book The Begums of Bhopal written by Shaharyar M. Khan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1819 and 1926 four Muslim women rulers reigned over Bhopal, the second largest Muslim state of India, despite staunch opposition from powerful neighbours and male claimants. Even the British East India Company initially opposed female rule in Bhopal until the Begums quoted Queen Victoria as their model and inspiration. Qudsia, the first Begum, was supported by her powerful French-Bourbon Prime Minister in her departure from the traditional. She was succeeded in 1844 by Sikandar, her only daughter, who discarded purdah like her mother and was a powerful and awesome ruler, leading her armies into battle, and indulging in the male-dominated pastimes of polo and tiger-hunting. Sikandar's only daughter, the highly controversial and liberal Shahjehan, made her mark on the state by building extensively, while the last Begum, Sultan Jahan, was a pioneering figure in education reform, and a standard-bearer for women's emancipation. The story ends with her abdication in favour of her son, the first male ruler (Nawab) of Bhopal in five generations. This book offers the first balanced history of the state and, in discussing the Begums' policies in dealing with the British, also provides a fascinating account of British Imperial relations with princely states.

Book Synopsis Channelling Mobilities by : Valeska Huber
Download or read book Channelling Mobilities written by Valeska Huber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of globalisation is usually told as a history of shortening distances and acceleration of the flows of people, goods and ideas. Channelling Mobilities refines this picture by looking at a wide variety of mobile people passing through the region of the Suez Canal, a global shortcut opened in 1869. As an empirical contribution to global history, the book asks how the passage between Europe and Asia and Africa was perceived, staged and controlled from the opening of the Canal to the First World War, arguing that this period was neither an era of unhampered acceleration, nor one of hardening borders and increasing controls. Instead, it was characterised by the channelling of mobilities through the differentiation, regulation and bureaucratisation of movement. Telling the stories of tourists, troops, workers, pilgrims, stowaways, caravans, dhow skippers and others, the book reveals the complicated entanglements of empires, internationalist initiatives and private companies.

Book Synopsis A Photographer on the Hajj by : Farid Kioumgi
Download or read book A Photographer on the Hajj written by Farid Kioumgi and published by Amer Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diaries of Muhammad 'Ali Effendi Sa'udi, a civil servant and accomplished photographer, offer a rare glimpse of the Hajj through Egyptian eyes at the beginning of the twentieth century when the Ottoman Empire was on the wane and the advance of the Hijaz railway threatened to upset vested interests in the old pattern of pilgrimage. Sa'udi twice accompanied the Amir al-Hajj, Ibrahim Rif'at Pasha, attached to the official Egyptian caravan. His story of these journeys combines the thoughts of a devout Muslim with fine detail on the hardships and health hazards facing pilgrims, the high-level intrigues, and the ever-present dangers of taking photographs. The authors have compressed the diaries into a highly readable narrative with selected quotations, lavishly illustrated with Sa'udi's remarkable photographs.
Book Synopsis International Handbook of Practical Theology by : Birgit Weyel
Download or read book International Handbook of Practical Theology written by Birgit Weyel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm. The articles in this handbook recognize that faith, spirituality, and lived religion, within and beyond institutional communities, refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders, whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are shifting. The International Handbook of Practical Theology offers insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious matters gathered from various cultures and traditions of faith. The first section presents ‘concepts of religion’. Chapters have to do with considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the fields of ‘anthropology’, ‘community’, ‘family’, ‘institution’, ‘law’, ‘media’, and ‘politics’ among others. The second section is dedicated to case studies of ‘religious practices’ from the perspective of their actors. The third section presents major theoretical discourses that explore the globally significant diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, sixty-one authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and postcolonial world.
