Book Synopsis The STEREO Mission: A Three-Dimensional View of the Sun and Heliosphere by :
Download or read book The STEREO Mission: A Three-Dimensional View of the Sun and Heliosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are massive outflows of material from the Sun's corona, traveling into the surrounding heliosphere at speeds up to 1000-2000 kilometers per second. When directed toward the Earth, CMEs can result in damage to satellites, enhanced auroral displays, blackouts of power grids on Earth, and interference with surface radio communications. The first CME detected from space was observed by an NRL coronagraph onboard the Seventh Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-7) in December 1971. Much of our recent knowledge of CMEs has been obtained from an NRL visible-light coronagraph (LASCO, the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph(2)) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, launched in 1995. But SOHO observes from only one viewpoint, leaving three-dimensional structure ambiguous for individual CMEs. The next step beyond SOHO is the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission, consisting of two spacecraft observing the Sun from two different viewpoints, allowing a three-dimensional view of the initiation of CMEs and their propagation outwards. In addition, STEREO will carry a new type of heliospheric coronagraph that is off-pointed from the solar disk, and can observe from the side the Sun-Earth line all the way out to Earth. The STEREO mission is meant to increase our understanding of such topics as solar structures and their properties involved in CME initiation; threedimensional structure and kinematics of CMEs; three-dimensional structure of active regions, coronal loops, and streamers; propagation of CMEs into the corona and interplanetary medium; and the effects of CMEs through the heliosphere to the Earth.
Book Synopsis Mission Moon 3-D by : David J. Eicher
Download or read book Mission Moon 3-D written by David J. Eicher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it, told in text and visually stunning 3-D images. July 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11's epochal lunar landing, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon. This visually rich book offers a new perspective on that historic accomplishment, telling the story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it with text and 3-D images. A 3D viewer, designed by astrophysicist (and lead guitarist with the rock group Queen) Brian May is included with the book. Mission Moon 3-D offers unique access to the Apollo astronauts and what they saw. It tells the story of the US-Soviet space race, from Sputnik and the space dog Laika to Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong guided the Eagle to a safe landing on the edge of the moon's Sea of Tranquility. President Richard Nixon told the astronauts, and the nation, that it was “the greatest week in the history of the world since the Creation.” Mission Moon 3-D recounts all this and more in memorable and visually stunning fashion.

Book Synopsis The ARTEMIS Mission by : Christopher Russell
Download or read book The ARTEMIS Mission written by Christopher Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ARTEMIS mission was initiated by skillfully moving the two outermost Earth-orbiting THEMIS spacecraft into lunar orbit to conduct unprecedented dual spacecraft observations of the lunar environment. ARTEMIS stands for Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun. Indeed, this volume discusses initial findings related to the Moon’s magnetic and plasma environments and the electrical conductivity of the lunar interior. This work is aimed at researchers and graduate students in both heliophysics and planetary physics. Originally published in Space Science Reviews, Vol. 165/1-4, 2011.
Book Synopsis Coronal Magnetometry by : Steven Tomczyk
Download or read book Coronal Magnetometry written by Steven Tomczyk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captures advances being made in the field of coronal magnetism, from theory to observations and instrumentation. This volume is a collection of research articles on the subject of the solar corona, and particularly, coronal magnetism. The book was motivated by the Workshop on Coronal Magnetism: Connecting Models to Data and the Corona to the Earth, which was held 21 - 23 May 2012 in Boulder, Colorado, USA. This workshop was attended by approximately 60 researchers. Articles from this meeting are contained in this topical issue, but the topical issue also contains contributions from researchers not present at the workshop. This volume is aimed at researchers and graduate students active in solar physics. Originally published in Solar Physics, Vol. 288, Issue 2, 2013 and Vol. 289, Issue 8, 2014.

This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dawn is the first mission to orbit a main belt asteroid and the first scientific mission to use ion propulsion. Major objectives of this mission include mapping of the surfaces of 4 Vesta and 1 Ceres, determining its topography from stereo measurements, determining its mineralogy, measuring its elemental composition and obtaining gravity data. This book describes the Dawn mission, its exploration and scientific objectives, the instruments that accomplish those objectives, the operations plan and the education and outreach plan. It is directed to those studying asteroids and the evolution of the solar system. This volume will be a valuable reference for anyone who uses data from the instruments of the DAWN mission. Previously published in Space Science Reviews, Vol. 163/1-4, 2012.
