Book excerpt: When your whole life becomes one big lie... The night my mum disappeared, after a panicked 3am phonecall, I knew something was wrong. The police tried to reassure me. There had to be a logical explanation they said – perhaps she’s taking a break after the tragic death of my father. But I know my mum. Or do I? She would never leave without telling me. Or would she? The harder I look, the more I discover deep, dark family secrets I was not privy to. Worrying secrets I was never meant to know. Which means my parents have lied to me my whole life. But why? Who can I turn to? Trust? Were they scared of something in their past? Or were they trying to protect me? Has mum gone on her own free will? Or has someone taken her? Diane Saxon’s compelling new thriller will have you questioning who you can trust to keep your family safe. Praise for Diane Saxon 'An unputdownable, tense, fast-paced, terrifying plot that deftly twists and turns.' - Danielle Ramsay ‘An intensely dark thriller.’ Ross Greenwood 'Packed full of secrets and lies, and in a town filled with an unsettling atmosphere Saxon succeeds in putting the ‘creep’ in creepy’ - Valerie Keogh 'Gripping... I couldn't put it down.' - Gemma Rogers 'A complex, dark and disturbing thriller, full of intrigue, toxic relationships and jaw dropping twists 5*' Alex Stone 'The final twist was so unexpected that I was taken by surprise.' - Reader Review 'I highly recommend this book you won't want to put it down' - Reader Review

Ron Deal offers advice for men navigating the stepfamily minefield, including how to connect with stepchildren, being a godly role model, how to discipline, dealing with the biological dad, and keeping the bond strong with one's new spouse. Book Synopsis Parenting in Stepfamilies by : Gladys Lan Tak Lam-Chan
Download or read book Parenting in Stepfamilies written by Gladys Lan Tak Lam-Chan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book contains the findings of an exploratory study using in-depth interviews on parenting and the dynamics of Hong Kong Chinese stepfamilies. The stepfamily is a topic which is in lack of local research in Hong Kong, but is an emerging family structure which has increasing need for professional intervention. This study began as a result of the researcher’s concern about the soaring number of divorces and broken families in Hong Kong and her curiosity to uncover the untold stories of stepfamilies. The literature review, presentation and thematic analysis of the findings of this study will increase the readers knowledge and understanding of stepfamilies in contexts which are different from Western societies. This book unveils the perceptions and life experiences of the stepmothers, social workers and teachers attitudes towards stepfamilies and the parenting behaviours of stepfamilies in Hong Kong. The author has reflectively analyzed the complex interplay between the social attitudes, cultural stereotyping of stepfamilies influenced by Chinese traditional values, aspirations towards marriage and marital relationships, parental expectations and parent-child relationships, ideology and policy issues affecting professional intervention.

Book excerpt: From the time I was old enough to form my first memory, my childhood was already headed down the inevitable path of dysfunction. With divorce in the books and a new man in the house, these events actually turned out to be the easy part. The hard part was absolutely everything else that followed. From the depths of addiction to the height of recovery. From a life-threatening diagnosis to the ultimate loss of a lifetime, my story will take you through a journey of one mother's love for her two young boys and the relentless courage to protect us, at any cost, from the very danger that she unwittingly had a hand in creating. It was a danger that would force us to disappear without a trace, from the only home we ever knew to a small town that no one could even pronounce. And as our lives were so quickly being turned upside down, all reasons for this upheaval could only point to one thing: the new man in the house. As the secrets began to pile up, there seemed to be far more questions than answers. The pressure to keep these secrets from us would inevitably take its toll, and by the time the truth was finally revealed, the emotional damage had already been done. No matter what degree of dysfunction that was dealt us, as two innocent boys from Chicago, thanks to our mother's unwavering love, we always had one thing to hold on to-hope. Hope of a second chance. Hope of a fresh start. The hope of a better ending to our story than the tragic beginning we were so unfairly given. From a very young age, I always knew my life was far from normal. There was just something about it that stood out, something that always had me wondering if everything I was experiencing was really what it seemed. And it was that mysterious "something" that would eventually reveal itself and change the course of my life forever.
