Book Synopsis Moritz Steinschneider. The Hebrew Translations of the Middle Ages and the Jews as Transmitters by : Charles H. Manekin
Download or read book Moritz Steinschneider. The Hebrew Translations of the Middle Ages and the Jews as Transmitters written by Charles H. Manekin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with medieval Jewish authors who wrote in Arabic, such as Moses Maimonides, Judah Halevi, and Solomon Ibn Gabirol, as well as the Hebrew translations and commentaries of Judaeo-Arabic philosophy. It brings up to date a part of Moritz Steinschneider’s monumental Die hebraeischen Uebersetzungen des Mittelalters und die Juden als Dolmetscher (The Hebrew Translations of the Middle Ages and the Jews as Transmitters), which was first published in 1893 and remains to this day the authoritative account of the transmission and development of Arabic and Latin, and, by way of those languages, Greek culture to medieval and renaissance Jews. In the work presented here, Steinschneider’s bibliography has been updated, some of his scholarly judgments have been judiciously revised and an exhaustive listing of pertinent Hebrew manuscripts and their whereabouts has been provided. The volume opens with a long essay that describes the origin and genesis of Die Hebraeischen Übersetzungen, and with Steinschneider’s prefaces to the French and German versions of his work. This publication is the first in a projected series that translates, updates and, where necessary, revises parts of Steinschneider’s bio-bibliographical classic. Historians of medieval culture and philosophy, and also scholars of the transmission of classical culture to Muslims, Christians, and Jews, will find this volume indispensable.

Book excerpt: The present volume is devoted to the study of the life and work of Moritz (Moshe) Steinschneider (1816-1907). It shows that far from being a “mere bibliographer,” Steinschneider pursued a precise scientific agenda. This is a noteworthy contribution to our understanding of the project of the Wissenschaft des Judentums.

Book Synopsis Moses Maimonides' Treatise on Resurrection by : Moses Maimonides
Download or read book Moses Maimonides' Treatise on Resurrection written by Moses Maimonides and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Maimonides' classic works, the Treatise on Resurrection is an extended discussion of resurrection, the immortality of the soul, the mysteries of the Messianic Age, and the World to Come. The Treatise on Resurrection was controversial in its day for its departure from accepted Jewish theology. Despite opposition to his ideas, Maimonides defended his view with skill and confidence. Fred Rosner's notes provide the background necessary to fully understand Maimonides' position, and his translation is an articulate rendering of this influential text, which validates resurrection as one of the cardinal principles of Judaism.

Book Synopsis The Late Medieval Hebrew Book in the Western Mediterranean by : Javier del Barco
Download or read book The Late Medieval Hebrew Book in the Western Mediterranean written by Javier del Barco and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection takes the Hebrew book as a focal point for exploring the production, circulation, transmission, and consumption of Hebrew texts in the cultural context of the late medieval western Mediterranean. The authors elaborate in particular on questions concerning private vs. public book production and collection; the religious and cultural components of manuscript patronage; collaboration between Christian and Jewish scribes, artists, and printers; and the impact of printing on Iberian Jewish communities. Unlike other approaches that take context into consideration merely to explain certain variations in the history of the Hebrew book from antiquity to the present, the premise of these essays is that context constitutes the basis for understanding practices and processes in late medieval Jewish book culture.

This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Bibliography Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries! The AJL Judaica Bibliography Award was established to encourage the publication of outstanding Judaica bibliographies. The intellectual legacy of the ancient community of Iranian Jews rests in several large but neglected Judeo-Persian manuscript collections. The largest in the West, and the third largest collection in the world (198 manuscripts), belongs to the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. Primarily a work of reference, this Catalog informs scholars in the fields of Judaica and Iranica about the range of subjects (history, poetry, medicine, philology, etc.) that engaged Iranian Jews between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. It reflects the intellectual parameters of Iranian Jewry by describing the extent to which they were acquainted with classical Jewish texts while they were deeply enmeshed in the literary and artistic sensibilities of their Iranian environment.
