Recently, the field has been criticized for the lack of scientific basis and statistical foundation compared to other forensic science fields because of the subjectivity in rendering a conclusion on a toolmark analysis. This research was undertaken to provide a potential way of building a strong scientific foundation with quantifiable error rate estimates. The method used for collecting data can be done without any special instrumentation or software application. The statistical analysis works with most types of vector data. The estimated error rates for the classification of debris, known as swarfs, for five drill bits were 6.90% and 3.97% for hold-out-one cross validation and bootstrap, respectively.

Book excerpt: This book presents the signal processing and data mining challenges encountered in drilling engineering, and describes the methods used to overcome them. In drilling engineering, many signal processing technologies are required to solve practical problems, such as downhole information transmission, spatial attitude of drillstring, drillstring dynamics, seismic activity while drilling, among others. This title attempts to bridge the gap between the signal processing and data mining and oil and gas drilling engineering communities. There is an urgent need to summarize signal processing and data mining issues in drilling engineering so that practitioners in these fields can understand each other in order to enhance oil and gas drilling functions. In summary, this book shows the importance of signal processing and data mining to researchers and professional drilling engineers and open up a new area of application for signal processing and data mining scientists.

Book excerpt: Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drill bits are exposed during drilling operations to various downhole conditions, ranging from benign (normal) conditions to various states of dysfunction. These include stick slip, whirl, bit bounce, and structural overload when drilling heterogeneous formations. It is well-known that these conditions can lead to PDC damage and eventual failure. However, little work has been published describing PDC damage modes and their origins. A workflow is introduced in this thesis to locate the point of “bit failure” from an analysis of relevant surface data, with key information provided by the PDC dull images. The root cause of the failure is then inferred from this analysis. This information can be used during well planning for optimized bit selection and BHA design, and for drilling parameter and tool selection guidance. It can also be used to optimize future bit runs, improving ROP and extending bit life, through observation of suitable drilling parameters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation: Seismic-while-drilling (SWD) utilises drill bit vibrations as a seismic source to obtain a reverse VSP profile, which can be used to calibrate the surface seismic image, predict infront-of-bit geo-hazards, and/or for general imaging around the bore hole. However, using the drill bit as a source has known issues of narrow band spectrum and weak energy; the extent of these issues varies with different types of drill bits. As such, different data processing and imaging methods might be needed for different drill bits. In this work, we try to estimate formation velocity based on drill bit position and to locate the drill bit in the cross correlation domain, so as to test the viability of using a diamond impregnated drill bit as an effective seismic source in hard rock imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drill stem vibration is a major cause of premature failure of drill stem components and drilling inefficiency. In severe cases, drill stem vibration may lead to wellbore instability that could lead to increased operational cost. Drill stem vibrations are affected by design decisions and the drilling environment. Examples are; bottom hole assembly configurations, selection of operational parameters, and frequent changes in lithology. Vibration modeling, analysis of vibration data, and specialized vibration reduction tools are methods in use to prevent and mitigate severe vibrations. A drill stem vibration model was created using nonlinear strain formulation which couples the axial, lateral and torsional vibration of the entire drill stem. The model includes the effect of geometric stiffening arising from the applied axial load, two new developed vibration reduction tools used to reduce drill stem vibrations and fluid flow inside and outside the drill stem taking into account two different fluid rheological models. The obtained equation of motion was assembled using the finite element analysis which was solved numerically in Matlab®. The sensitivity analysis using Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko models, showed that the Euler-Bernoulli assumption is satisfactory when modeling drill stem vibrations at typical drilling conditions. Analyzing three adjacent wells in the North Sea with different bottom hole assembly and recorded vibration data, revealed that including drill stem vibration reduction tools reduces drill stem vibration and decreases stick-slip tendency. Including drilling fluid circulation, by imposing dynamic pressures on the inside and outside of the drill stem, affect lateral natural frequencies. High flow rate and wrong selection of total flow area at the drill bit could lead to vibrations"--Abstract, page iii.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling the rate of penetration of the drill bit has been essential to optimizing drilling operations. Optimization of drilling - a cost intensive operation in the oil and gas industry- is essential, especially during downturns in the oil and gas industry. This thesis evaluates the use of statistical learning models to predict and optimize ROP in drilling operations. Statistical Learning Models can range from simple models (linear regression) to complex models (random forests). A range of statistical learning models have been evaluated in this thesis in order to determine an optimum method for prediction of rate of penetration (ROP) in drilling. Linear techniques such as regression have been used to predict ROP. Special linear regression models such as lasso and ridge regression have been evaluated. Dimension reduction techniques like principal components regression are evaluated for ROP prediction. Non-linear algorithms like trees have been introduced to address the low accuracy of linear models. Trees suffer from low accuracy and high variance. Trees are bootstrapped and averaged to create the random forests algorithm. Random forests algorithm is a powerful algorithm which predicts ROP with high accuracy. A parametric study was used to determine the ideal training sets for ROP prediction. It was conclude that data within a formation forms the best training set for ROP prediction. Parametric analysis of the length of the training set revealed that 20% of the formation interval depth was enough to train an accurate predictor for ROP. The ROP model built using statistical learning models were then used as an equation to optimize ROP. An optimization algorithm was used to compute ideal values of input feature to improve ROP in the test set. Surface controllable input features were varied in an effort to improve ROP. ROP was improved to save a predicted total of 22 hours of active drilling time using this method. This thesis introduces statistical learning techniques for predicting and optimizing ROP during drilling. These methods use input data to model ROP. Input features (surface parameters which are controllable on the rig) are then changed to optimize ROP. This methodology can be utilized for reducing nonproductive time (NPT) in drilling, and applied to optimize drilling procedures
