Book excerpt: Today, any regular newspaper reader is likely to be exposed to reports on manifold forms of (physical, emotional, sexual) child abuse on the one hand, and abnormal behavior, misconduct or offences of children and minors on the other hand. Occasionally reports on children as victims and children as offenders may appear on the same issue or even the same page. Rather seldom the more complex and largely hidden phenomena of structural hostility or indifference of society with a view to children are being dealt with in the press. Such fragmentary, ambiguous, incoherent or even contradictory perception of children in modem society indicates that, firstly, there is a lack of reliable information on modem childhood, and secondly, children are still treated as a comparatively irrelevant population group in society. This conclusion may be surprising in particular when drawn at the end of The Century of the Child proclaimed by Ellen Key as early as 1902. Actually, there exist unclarities and ambiguities about the evolution of childhood in the last century not only in public opinion, but also in scientific literature. While De Mause with his psycho-historic model of the evolution of childhood, comprising different stages from infanticide, abandonment, ambivalence, intrusion, socialisation to support, underlines the continuous improvement of the condition of childhood throughout history and thus rather confirms Key's expectations, Aries, with his social history of childhood, seems to hold a more culturally pessimistic view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Demographic Revolution in Modern Egypt tells the dramatic story of Egypt's transition in the last two decades from staggeringly high to low fertility and mortality rates. Scholars Warren C. Robinson and Fatma H. El-Zanaty especially delve into the reasons for the decline in fertility, including the relative success of Egypt's recent public initiatives in family planning. Robinson and El-Zanaty compellingly show the importance of continued demographic stability in Egypt for that nation, the Middle East, and indeed the world. The authors point to Egypt's optimistic progress as a model for other countries facing out-of-control birthrates wreaking havoc with economic and social development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and problematises the war discourse regarding Egypt's victory in the 1973 War. It traces the process through which this discourse was constructed and reconstructed by the state throughout the periods of President Anwar Sadat, his successor Hosni Mubarak, and afterwards. It uses Critical Discourse Analysis to combine analysis of texts commemorating the war with a study of the socio-political milieu related to personal authoritarianism and the state’s intricate relations with the army, the press and Islamists.

It is increasingly regarded as the leading international forum for commentary on, and analysis of, emerging issues in a field of study of everincreasing global significance. There is no more useful and thorough pricis of what has happened in Islamic and Middle Eastern law over the last year. With Volume 8 -and the advent of Martin Lau as co-editor with Eugene Cotran- the Yearbook begins an expansion of its purview into non-Arab Islamic countries, beginning in this volume with essays covering issues in Afghanistan and Kenya. The Yearbook will continue to be an authorative source of insightful commentary and scholarship on relevant developments wherever the influence of Islamic law is felt.
