Download or read book Education and the State written by Carla Aubry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most countries in the world, school education is the business of the state. Even if forms and functions differ, the imparting of elementary knowledge is universally regarded as a public function. Yet this is neither self-evident nor self-explanatory. The degree of involvement of state agencies in the supervision, financing and organization of the school system sometimes varies so much that the usual assumption of a common understanding of ‘the state’ seems to be an illusion. Making international comparisons and focusing strongly on the historical conditions of the current form of state education, this volume paints a nuanced picture of how the relationship between ‘education’ and ‘state’ has been and is conceptualized. Insights into this relationship are gained by considering and analysing both specific processes such as financing and bureaucracy; and conceptual ideas, for example community, authority, and political utopias. The book presents comparative studies and analyses of regional and local conditions, arguing that the history of each country or region is critical to educational success, and the relationship between the education and the state must be reconsidered, both internationally and historically, in order to be of actual conceptual value. Education and the State presents a broad variety of approaches and examples that provide a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between education and the state. It will be of key value to academics and researchers in the fields of the history of education, the politics of education, and educational administration.

Book Synopsis The State and Higher Education by : Dr Brian Salter
Download or read book The State and Higher Education written by Dr Brian Salter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about higher education but very little about the organisations of the state which increasingly determine its destiny. Employing the theory of educational change developed in the authors' previous work, this book analyses the contribution each part of the state structure has made to the present condition of higher education. Beginning with the political parties and parliamentary committees, it shows how there has been a steady decline in support for the traditional values of autonomous university education and a growing belief in the accountability of higher education to the needs of the economy. It then proceeds to show how this ideological change was fostered by the DES and used to justify the development of bureaucratic mechanisms of management and control.

By influencing the education of their citizens, governments hope to produce loyal subjects. Yet everywhere, at all times, men and women of independent mind and will have resisted and opposed state education. Critics of State Education: A Reader surveys this important movement, bringing together influential historical texts of thinkers great and small. Book Synopsis Between Citizens and the State by : Christopher P. Loss
Download or read book Between Citizens and the State written by Christopher P. Loss and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tracks the dramatic outcomes of the federal government's growing involvement in higher education between World War I and the 1970s, and the conservative backlash against that involvement from the 1980s onward. Using cutting-edge analysis, Christopher Loss recovers higher education's central importance to the larger social and political history of the United States in the twentieth century, and chronicles its transformation into a key mediating institution between citizens and the state. Framed around the three major federal higher education policies of the twentieth century--the 1944 GI Bill, the 1958 National Defense Education Act, and the 1965 Higher Education Act--the book charts the federal government's various efforts to deploy education to ready citizens for the national, bureaucratized, and increasingly global world in which they lived. Loss details the myriad ways in which academic leaders and students shaped, and were shaped by, the state's shifting political agenda as it moved from a preoccupation with economic security during the Great Depression, to national security during World War II and the Cold War, to securing the rights of African Americans, women, and other previously marginalized groups during the 1960s and '70s. Along the way, Loss reappraises the origins of higher education's current-day diversity regime, the growth of identity group politics, and the privatization of citizenship at the close of the twentieth century. At a time when people's faith in government and higher education is being sorely tested, this book sheds new light on the close relations between American higher education and politics.
Book Synopsis Education, Equity, and the States by : Sara E. Dahill-Brown
Download or read book Education, Equity, and the States written by Sara E. Dahill-Brown and published by Educational Innovations. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education, Equity, and the States examines how variations in state governance determine how federal initiatives are implemented and makes recommendations for approaching reform from this perspective. The book defines the key ways in which state policy environments differ from one another, illustrates how those differences matter, and encourages reformers to account for these disparities to achieve more sustained and equitable improvement. Drawing on original research, Sara E. Dahill-Brown highlights three major factors that differ from state to state: the number of districts (fragmentation); the degree to which education governance is separated from other political issues (exceptionalism); and how much state legislation tends to impinge on local autonomy (local control). She examines the historical and political trends that have shaped differences among the states and how they affect the impact of education reforms. By identifying typical patterns in state governance, Dahill-Brown suggests ways to work with varying governance structures to lead to more successful and equitable outcomes. Dahill-Brown argues that reformers at every level must routinely assess the appropriateness of their consensus-building and collaboration strategies. With the increasing importance of states in education, her work makes a notable contribution to our understanding of the landscape of education reform.
Book Synopsis The State, Business and Education by : Gita Steiner-Khamsi
Download or read book The State, Business and Education written by Gita Steiner-Khamsi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Businesses, philanthropies and non-profit entities are increasingly successful in capturing public funds to support private provision of schooling in developed and developing countries. Coupled with market-based reforms that include weak regulation, control over workforces, standardization of processes and economies of scale, private provision of schooling is often seen to be convenient for both public authorities and businesses. This book examines how the public subsidization of these forms of private education affects quality, equality and the realization of human rights. With original research from leading experts, The State, Business and Educationsheds light on the privatization of education in fragile circumstances. It illustrates the ways in which private actors have expanded their involvement in education as a business, and shows the influence of policy borrowing on the spread of for-profit education. Case studies from Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India and Syrian refugee camps illustrate the ways in which private actors have expanded their involvement in education as a business. This book will be of interest not only to academics and students of international and comparative education, but also to education development professionals in both the private and public sectors, with its empirical assessment of case studies, and careful consideration of the lessons to be learned from each. Book Synopsis From the New Deal to the War on Schools by : Daniel S. Moak
Download or read book From the New Deal to the War on Schools written by Daniel S. Moak and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era defined by political polarization, both major U.S. parties have come to share a remarkably similar understanding of the education system as well as a set of punitive strategies for fixing it. Combining an intellectual history of social policy with a sweeping history of the educational system, Daniel S. Moak looks beyond the rise of neoliberalism to find the origin of today's education woes in Great Society reforms. In the wake of World War II, a coalition of thinkers gained dominance in U.S. policymaking. They identified educational opportunity as the ideal means of addressing racial and economic inequality by incorporating individuals into a free market economy. The passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in 1965 secured an expansive federal commitment to this goal. However, when social problems failed to improve, the underlying logic led policymakers to hold schools responsible. Moak documents how a vision of education as a panacea for society's flaws led us to turn away from redistributive economic policies and down the path to market-based reforms, No Child Left Behind, mass school closures, teacher layoffs, and other policies that plague the public education system to this day.

Book Synopsis Education and the State by : E. G. West
Download or read book Education and the State written by E. G. West and published by Indianapolis : Liberty Fund. This book was released on 1994 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education and the State first appeared in 1965 and was immediately hailed as one of the century's most important works on education. In the thirty years that followed, the questions this book raised concerning state-run education have grown immeasurably in urgency and intensity. Education and the State re-examines the role of government in education and challenges the fundamental statist assumption that the state is best able to provide an education for the general population. West explores the views on education of the nineteenth-century British reformers and classical economists who argued the necessity of state education. He demonstrates that by the Foster Act of 1870 the state system of education was superimposed upon successful private efforts, thereby suppressing an emerging and increasingly robust structure of private, voluntary, and competitive education funded by families, churches, and philanthropies. This new and expanded edition of Education and the State addresses the American situation in education, applying the lessons learned from the study of British institutions. It also broadens their application from education to the conduct of democracy as a political system. Edwin G. West was Professor Emeritus of Economics at Carleton University, Ottawa.

Book Synopsis The New Institutionalism in Education by : Heinz-Dieter Meyer
Download or read book The New Institutionalism in Education written by Heinz-Dieter Meyer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Institutionalism in Education brings together leading academics to explore the ongoing changes in K–12 and higher education in both the United States and abroad. The contributors show that current educational trends—including the increased globalization of education, the growing emphasis on educational markets and school choice, the rise of accountability systems, and the persistent influence of business groups like textbook manufacturers and test makers on educational policy—can best be understood when observed through an institutional lens. Because schools and universities are organizations that are stabilized by deeply institutionalized rules, they are subject to the enduring problem of substantive educational reform. This book gives researchers and policy analysts conceptual tools and empirical assessments to gauge the possibilities for institutional reform and innovation.
Book Synopsis Christianity and Liberalism by : John Gresham Machen
Download or read book Christianity and Liberalism written by John Gresham Machen and published by . This book was released on 1923 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the issue of Christianity and Liberalism in such as way that the reader may be aided in deciding it for himself. The principal concern is to show that the liberal attempt at reconciling Christianity with modern science has really relinquished everything distinctive of Christianity, so that what remains in in essentials only that same indefinite type of religious aspiration which was in the world before Christianity came upon the scene.
