It is shown that the old interpretation of the terms ascend and 'descend') is impossible for the Vitruvian stage in the third and fifth passages; moreover, in the fifth, that the sense 'retire' is also impossible in the scholiast's application of the meaning, since actors and chorus are on a level. The last passage, therefore, is positive proof against the existence of a stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From the fifth to the second century BC, innovative comedy drama flourished in Greece and Rome. This collection brings together the greatest works of Classical comedy, with two early Greek plays: Aristophanes' bold, imaginative Birds, and Menander's The Girl from Samos, which explores popular contemporary themes of mistaken identity and sexual misbehaviour; and two later Roman comic plays: Plautus' The Brothers Menaechmus - the original comedy of errors - and Terence's bawdy yet sophisticated double love-plot, The Eunuch. Together, these four plays demonstrate the development of Classical comedy, celebrating its richness, variety and extraordinary legacy to modern drama.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristophanes and the Political Parties at Athens In this volume the attentive reader will find, not only a very scholarly treatment of the difficult question, so often discussed, of Aristophanes' attitude toward the political parties of his time and of the political purpose of his comedies, but also a very vivid account of many of the phases of Athenian life which he has satirized or held up to ridicule. I cherish the hope that this book will lead some of its readers to refresh their school-day memories of Attica's brilliant comic poet, and others to make the acquaintance, at first hand, or through translation, of one of the most original and enter taining geniuses that ancient culture can boast of. In rendering the quotations from the plays into English I have made frequent use of Mr. Benjamin Bickley Rogers' masterly metrical translation and of the refreshing notes to Dr. W. W. Merry's edition of the plays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Athenian Stage: A Handbook for Students Our knowledge of the origin and growth of Attic tragedy is exceedingly confused and imperfect, derived as it is from notices in ancient writers, which are not only rare, but in most instances very brief also, and so vaguely expressed as to admit of various interpretations. For the most part they consist either of short occasional: disquisitions, or of extracts selected with very little judgment or critical skill by the grammarians and lexicographers of a later period; or even of mere conjectural fillings up of a broken and ill-defined outline. Under such circumstances, instead of wondering at the contradictory theories advanced by different writers, we are rather forced to acknowledge the extreme difficulty, not to say impossibility, of tracing with even tolerable accuracy the different steps by which Attic tragedy gradually attained perfection. Instead, therefore, of attempting a complete history, we shall content ourselves with using such materials as we possess, without entering on the discussion of questions, the solution of which, however desirable, seems scarcely possible with our limited means of information. Book excerpt: Reissue of Aristophanes' most famous plays in the Methuen Classical Greek Dramatists series Aristophanes is the oldest comedic writer in Western literature. Although only eleven of the some forty plays he wrote survive, his unique blend of slapstick, fantasy, bawy and political satire provide us with a vivid picture of the ancient Athenians - their social mores, their beliefs and their exuberant sense of occasion. Wasps is a lawcourt satire, Clouds a lighthearted look at education, Birds a search for the perfect society, Festival Time a feminist trial of Euripides and Frogs a celebration of and debate around the theatre.Aristophanes was a unique writer for the comic stage as well as one of the most revealing about the society for which he wrote.
