Book excerpt: Guidance for Your Spiritual Journey—from the Wisdom of Yoga and Vedanta “The ultimate goal of life is to discover the divinity within ourselves and in all beings and things. This will lead us to adore our true Self, adore our fellow beings, and adore the world that is but a reflection of Reality. This reunion with the Absolute—the core of our individual being as well as of the universe—is the true meaning of yoga.” —from chapter 13 The yoga way maintains that spiritual quest is not a matter of choice but a vital necessity for total well-being. This comprehensive guide for spiritual seekers of all faiths and backgrounds presents a roadmap to Self-knowledge, the goal of spiritual quest, and shows that reconnecting with the center of your being, your true Self, is real, tangible and attainable. Exploring the route to spiritual fulfillment through the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta, Swami Adiswarananda outlines the meaning of spiritual quest, the nature of and the preparations necessary for the journey and the milestones you will use to chart your progress. He also draws from the sacred texts of these time-tested traditions to address the vital questions that often trouble spiritual seekers, such as: Which spiritual path should I follow? How can I attain liberation? What are the dangers and obstacles on the spiritual path? How do I control the restless mind? Why are there many religions and what is the way to interfaith unity?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100,000 copies sold! Millions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in the midst of our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as "the way of the fully alive human being"--a 4,000-year-old practical path of liberation that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. Now one of America's leading scholars of yoga psychology--who is also a Western-trained psychotherapist--offers this marvelously lively and personal account of an ancient tradition that promises "the soul awake in this lifetime." Drawing on the vivid stories of practitioners at the largest yoga center in America, where he has lived and taught for more than ten years, Stephen Cope describes the philosophy, psychology, and practice of yoga--a practical science of development that urges us not to transcend or dissolve the self, but rather to encounter it more deeply. In this irreverent modern-day Pilgrim's Progress, Cope introduces us to an unforgettable cast of contemporary seekers--on the road to enlightenment carrying all the baggage of the human condition: confusion, loss, disappointment, addiction, and the eternal conflicts around sex and relationship. As he describes the subtle shifts of energy and consciousness that happen at each stage of the path, we discover that in yoga, "liberation" does not require us to leave life in the world for some transcendent spiritual plane. Life itself is the path. Above all, Cope shows how yoga can heal the suffering of self-estrangement that pervades our society, leading us to a new sense of purpose and to a deeper, more satisfying life in the world.

The philosophy of Yoga tells us that the root cause of our sorrows and suffering is loss of contact with our true Self. Our recovery is only possible by reestablishing contact with our innermost Self, the Reality of all realities, and by recognizing that knowledge of Self is our salvation. In this comprehensive guide, Swami Adiswarananda introduces the four spiritual paths of Yoga—Karma-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, Raja-Yoga and Jnana-Yoga—and what you can expect as an aspirant on each path. Covering the message and practice of each of the Yogas as well as philosophy and psychology, preparatory practices, common obstacles and ways to overcome them, this accessible book will prove invaluable to anyone wishing to follow a Yoga practice in order to realize the goal of Self-knowledge.

Book excerpt: In The True Path, Duke psychiatrist Roy J. Mathew draws on his own extensive knowledge of neuroscience as he looks at the centuries-old Indian idea that spirituality is a state of mind-a higher form of consciousness. Mathew shows how the latest brain research demonstrates that activities such as prayer, music, art, nature, intuitive knowledge, altruism, and meditation stimulate the non-dominant hemisphere of the brain. Spirituality is intimately connected to this area of the brain and must be accessed-according to Indian philosophy-by removing the "sheaths" of everyday life. With scientific evidence that this "pure consciousness" truly exists, Mathew shows readers how to use meditation, yoga, and other traditional methods of contemplation to achieve this spiritual state of mind

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of yoga’s transformation from sacred discipline to exercise program to embodied spiritual practice • Identifies the origin of exercise yoga as India’s response to the mania for exercise sweeping the West in the early 20th century • Examines yoga’s transformations through the lives and accomplishments of 11 key figures, including Sri Yogendra, K. V. Iyer, Louise Morgan, Krishnamacharya, Swami Sivananda, Indra Devi, and B. K. S. Iyengar • Draws on more than 10 years of research from rare primary sources and includes 99 illustrations In The Path of Modern Yoga, Elliott Goldberg shows how yoga was transformed from a sacred practice into a health and fitness regime for middle-class Indians in the early 20th century and then gradually transformed over the course of the 20th century into an embodied spiritual practice--a yoga for our times. Drawing on more than 10 years of research from rare primary sources as well as recent scholarship, Goldberg tells the sweeping story of modern yoga through the remarkable lives and accomplishments of 11 key figures: six Indian yogis (Sri Yogendra, Swami Kuvalayananda, S. Sundaram, T. Krishnamacharya, Swami Sivananda, and B. K. S. Iyengar), an Indian bodybuilder (K. V. Iyer), a rajah (Bhavanarao Pant Pratinidhi), an American-born journalist (Louise Morgan), an Indian diplomat (Apa Pant), and a Russian-born yogi trained in India (Indra Devi). The author places their achievements within the context of such Western trends as the physical culture movement, the commodification of exercise, militant nationalism, jazz age popular entertainment, the quest for youth and beauty, and 19th-century New Age religion. In chronicling how the transformation of yoga from sacred discipline to exercise program allowed for the creation of an embodied spiritual practice, Goldberg presents an original, authoritative, provocative, and illuminating interpretation of the history of modern yoga.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is and He can be known. There is a step-by-step method to realize Him. For this, you do not have to go anywhere but within yourself. Knowing yourself, as you truly are, is tantamount to knowing God, right there and then. “Go within” is what all Masters advocated for realizing the Truth and yet it is this message that is continuously overlooked. This book will show you how through meditation you can manifest it. The reading is an aid to assist you on your spiritual journey to Self-Realization. Countless saints of all times and religions have demonstrated that. And you can do it too. The sufferings of life in each incarnation will otherwise remain more or less the same. You will be born again, without your choice, in a certain environment of your own makings. You will again be living a life of mediocrity, limitation, pains, and pleasures, and largely aimless. But you can decide to get over the sufferings permanently and attain Nirvana, the ultimate realization, in this life itself. It is of little significance whether you have started your quest early or late in life. It is not always the first initiates on the journey who get to the infinite, for often the last become the first. One may say remembering God all the time may shift one’s focus from day-to-day jobs. Not so. Remember, if you merely look at the road and never actually travel it, you will not reach your goal. Not making sincere efforts, merely reading the lessons, or thinking about self-realization, will not take you there. You have to learn the principles and techniques and then put them into practice. Slowly and steadily, you will reach the summit for sure. Understand the difference between Knowing and Being. It does take a lot of effort to even know God, it is good progress that way. But it is not of much use till the realization is achieved, which requires different efforts. The purpose of this book is to help in achieving the realization. Remember what Bible says. First, seek the kingdom of God. The word used is ‘seek’ and not ‘know’. God has to be realized not just known. Then it says, seek the ‘kingdom of God’. It does not say to seek God directly, but the kingdom. Now the question is where is the kingdom of God? It is everywhere and the nearest place is our own existence, our body. Then the question may come, is there a model or path? Yes, Yoga. Which means that action that brings the union of soul and Spirit from which we descended. It is the yoga of the subtle body, a Union of mind and body control, with a focus on meditation and energetics. Meditation is not what you think. Yoga meditation helps to bring about greater peace, mental control, and joy leading to awakening. All saints who have ever found God practiced some form of meditation to rediscover the real Self. No matter what your faith is, or what your belief is, this is the scientific highway to the infinite for anyone whosoever practices it. This is the practice that will get rid of the boundation of birth and death. No salvation is possible until the kundalini awakening is achieved scientifically. And it does not happen accidentally. Learn the fundamentals and techniques of the science of all science – Kriyayoga. It is a science, eternal, and precedes all religions. This is the science every Human being should practice, in order to learn how to switch On and Off, the life force from the body at will. This science encompasses the practices outlined in Sankhya, Vedanta, and Yoga. All three ancient philosophies together constitute the truly scientific approach that promises to remove suffering from the roots so that they can never sprout or grow again. Practice is the key. Learn to know the Yog sutra, Yoga philosophy, and Yoga meditation science and techniques. Practice it and feel the effects yourself. Immediate benefits will be felt in physical health, mental health, and Spiritual health. Sooner, His presence will be felt within. Go for it, try it out. God will help you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother used to chant in Sanskrit in her study before sunrise every morning. Though she died when I was 16—22 years ago—I always hear her voice that way. Off-key, but strangely hypnotic, the language both complicated and pure, reverberating around our house. For a kid growing up in Southern Ohio — Bible belt country — the sound was both alluring and repellent. "What's your mother doing?" my friends would ask. "Being a weirdo," I told them. And so encapsulates the coming of age story of Sasha Brown, a transplanted tween plunked in the middle of the Bible Belt with a macrobiotic hippy mom and a ribs-eating dad. A writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Redbook, and Cosmopolitan, Brown's prose is heartfelt and hilarious, revealing her quest to find her way as two worlds collide. While other moms were at Bible study, her mom was studying Sanskrit; while other were finding friendship at Tupperware parties, her mom was finding enlightenment at the ashram. And when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she chose a healthy diet and yoga over aggressive chemo. When her mother died, Brown ran as far away from yoga as she could until a running injury left her needing the very thing she was running from. It was there—on the mat—that she processed her grief and found her mother again. As she went deeper into the poses, she discovered she was more like her mother than she thought. Through it all, she found a deeper understanding of the practice, of the breath, and of the life her mother lost too young. The practice that once seemed easy and slow compared to pounding the pavement in a new pair of Asics became the biggest challenge of her life. She learned that yoga is so much more than asana. So much more than breath. So much more than perfect poses. The "union" of yoga became one of heart and mind, and finally, with that maternal energy Sasha had been missing for so many years. In the space that she focused her mind and pushed her body to its breaking point was where she would see her mother. In the space of her yoga mat, she and her mother connect across time. Namaste the Hard Way is an ode to the timeless bond between mothers and daughters. Plucky and poignant, Namaste the Hard Way is for anyone who didn't want to walk in their mother's shoes (or sandals).
