This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: exclude the inquiry why injustice is permitted. It is possible to forget the universality of these difficulties, and to see them so concentrated in the cross of Christ that it becomes a mystery, because they have not altogether been explained. The mistake lies in not seeing that whatever mystery there may be, is with them, and that, given the facts of the world as they are, the cross is intelligible in their light. 3. But perhaps more influential than either of these causes has been the pre-occupation of men's minds with other theological and religious interests. This generation has come to apprehend, as no other has done, the Fatherhood of God. His compassionateness in its depth and universality, both as embracing all men and as concerned with the whole round of human interests, has been realised as never before, and has inspired evangelic appeal and social effort. Too often, perhaps, His Fatherhood and His compassionateness have been treated as almost convertible terms. This apprehension of the Fatherhood of God has involved various subsidiary lines of thought, for which material has at the same time accumulated. The universal Fatherhood necessitates a philosophy of religion, and has therefore directed attention to the problem of the relation of Christianity to other religions. Hence the comparative study of religious has possessed an equal attraction for the theologian and for the scientific inquirer. Again, this age has seen the awakening of the desire to rediscover the historic Christ. The humanity of our Lord has had a new interest. For many reasons this has been so. The growth of the historical spirit and the accumulation of historical information made it impossible to ignore the greatest figure in history. The very effort to upholdthe evidence of the gospel against t...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians agree that they are saved through the death and resurrection of Christ. But how is the atonement achieved in these events? This book offers an introduction to the doctrine of the atonement focused on the unity and diversity of the work of Christ. Johnson reorients current patterns of thought concerning Christ's work by giving the reader a unifying vision of the immensely rich and diverse doctrine of the atonement, offering a sampling of its treasures, and cultivating the desire to further understand and apply these riches to everyday life. Where introductions to the atonement typically favor one aspect of the work of Christ, or work with a set number of themes, aspects or theories, this book takes the opposite approach, developing the foundation for the multi-faceted nature of Christ's work within the being of God himself. It offers a grand unifying vision of Christ's manifold work. Specific elaborations of different theories of the atonement, biblical themes, and the work of different theologians find their place within this larger rubric.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Book excerpt: Robert William Dale (1829 – 1895) was an English Congregationalist pastor who ministered at Carr's Lane Chapel in Birmingham for over 40 years. His 1875 Lectures on the Atonement have remained in print for almost 150 years. John Stott tells the story of a minister who approached Martyn Lloyd-Jones in the early years of his ministry and observed that the finished work of Christ had little place in his preaching. Lloyd-Jones immediately visited a used bookstore and asked for any volumes on the atonement. The owner brought out James Denney's The Death of Christ and R. W. Dale's The Atonement. To the concern of his wife, Lloyd-Jones locked himself in his room, so absorbed in these two books he refused even to eat. When he emerged several days later, he exclaimed that he had found "the real heart of the gospel and the key to the inner meaning of the Christian faith."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long history of biblical exegesis and theological reflection has shaped our understanding of the atonement today. The more prominent highlights of this history have acquired familiar names for the household of faith: Christus Victor, penal substitutionary, subjective, and governmental. Recently the penal substitutionary view, and particularly its misappropriations, has been critiqued, and a lively debate has taken hold within evangelicalism. This Spectrum Multiview volume offers a "panel" discussion of four views of atonement maintained by four evangelical scholars. The proponents and their views are: Gregory A. Boyd: Christus Victor view Joel B. Green: Kaleidescopic view Bruce R. Reichenbach: Healing view Thomas R. Schreiner: Penal Substitutionary view Following an introduction written by the editors, each participant first puts forth the case for their view. Each view is followed by responses from the other three participants, noting points of agreement as well as disagreement. This is a book that will help Christians understand the issues, grasp the differences and proceed toward a clearer articulation of their understanding of the atonement. Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on contested topics within Christianity, giving contributors the opportunity to present their position and also respond to others in this dynamic publishing format.
