Download or read book We by Charles A. Lindbergh written by Charles A. Lindbergh and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the autobiography of the famous flier, Charles A. Lindbergh, written almost immediately after his famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927. This historic flight by Charles Lindbergh took him from being a little known US Postal Service Air Mail pilot and made him into one of the most famous if not the most famous person in the world. The main impetus for the flight was the $25,000 Orteig Prize offered by the French-born New York hotelier Raymond Orteig. He offered the prize to be awarded to the pilot of the first successful nonstop flight made in either direction between New York City and Paris. The book, which was also soon translated into most major languages, remained at the top of best-seller lists well into 1928, with more than 650,000 copies sold in the first year, and earned Lindbergh more than $250,000. The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans, a quarter of the nation's then population. No other author before or since ever had such an extensive, highly publicized tour that helped promote a book than did Lindbergh's "We" of himself and the Spirit during their 22,350-mile tour of the US. He visited 82 cities in all 48 states during which the nation's nascent aviation superhero delivered 147 speeches and rode 1,290 miles in parades.

Download or read book Marching Song written by Orson Welles and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before The Cradle Will Rock, before War of the Worlds, before Citizen Kane—there was Marching Song. At the age of 25 Orson Welles co-wrote, directed, and starred in Citizen Kane, widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. But this was not the first achievement in the young artist’s career. A few years earlier he terrorized America with his radio broadcast of War of the Worlds. And even before he conquered the airwaves, Welles had made a name for himself in New York theatre, with his dynamic stagings of Shakespeare classics and the politically charged musical The Cradle Will Rock. But before all of these there was Marching Song—a play about abolitionist John Brown—that Welles had co-written at the age of 17. While attending the Todd School for Boys, Welles collaborated with Roger Hill, the schoolmaster at Todd, to produce this full-length drama. Marching Song: A Play is a work by one of America’s true geniuses at an early stage of his creative growth. Steeped in historical detail, the play chronicles Brown’s fight against slavery, his raid on Harper’s Ferry, his capture, his conviction for treason, and his execution. In addition to the entire text of the play, this volume features a biographical sketch of Welles and Hill—written by Hill’s grandson—during their days together at Todd. A fascinating dramatization of a pivotal event in American history, this play also demonstrates Welles’ burgeoning development as social commentator and an advocate for human rights, particularly on behalf of African Americans. Featuring a foreword by noted Welles biographer, Simon Callow, Marching Song: A Play is an important work by an American icon.

Book excerpt: Writer Rinker Buck looks back more than 30 years to a summer when he and his brother, at ages 15 and 17 respectively, became the youngest duo to fly across America, from New Jersey to California. Having grown up in an aviation family, the two boys bought an old Piper Cub, restored it themselves, and set out on the grand journey. Buck is a great storyteller, and once you get airborne with the boys you find yourself absorbed in a story of adventure and family drama. And Flight of Passage is also an affecting look back to the summer of 1966, when the times seemed much less cynical and adventures much more enjoyable.

Book excerpt: Before Citizen Kane, before The War of the Worlds, Orson Welles was an artist, and he drew and painted throughout his life. Published here for the first time is one of his most charming works-a gift he created for his daughter Rebecca. The year is 1956. During a stay in St. Tropez, Welles returns to his paintbox. Working with watercolor, crayon, ink, and gouache, sketching and painting on whatever paper he has at hand, Welles creates an illustrated retelling of the Bravade, the festival held every year on St. Tropez's saint's-day. Now Les Bravades has been meticulously reproduced to preserve the original's spirit. From the opening spread-a loose, Dufy-like sketch of the harbor-to the character portraits of the local bravadeurs to the firing of guns and flares at the festival's culmination. Afterword by Simon Callow.

Download or read book Two Lives written by Reeve Lindbergh and published by Brigantine Media. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of aviator-authors Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, writes about the intersection of fame and privacy from her unique perspective¿as the spokesperson for the arguably most famous family of the twentieth century. In her new book, Lindbergh reflects on her own ¿Two Lives,¿ navigating her role as the public face of her family while, at the same time, leading a very quiet existence in rural Vermont. After devoting years to keeping separate her ¿Lindbergh life¿ and her everyday life on her farm, she now finds herself able to make peace with her two lives. Lindbergh takes us into the National Air and Space Museum and her own kitchen drawers with equal ease, discovering that the history-making items on display are, for her, like the memorabilia that most families keep in the attic. Two Lives reconciles the seemingly separate worlds of fame and privacy, even finding a ¿certain sweetness¿ when they intersect.
