Book Synopsis The Spirit Dimension in African Christianity by : Silas S. Ncozana
Download or read book The Spirit Dimension in African Christianity written by Silas S. Ncozana and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2002 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of Africa was transformed into a Christian continent within a few generations, changing profoundly the nature of the continent's religion; but the spirits of the old religions did not necessarily disappear. 'Spirit possession' and 'spirit affliction' cults, often institutionalised in African religions, are still common in many societies, also those which are now predominantly Christian. Silas Ncozana's work sets out to explore the implications of spirit possession for the Tumbuka people, the largest ethnic group in the North of Malawi - about ten percent of the overall population, many of whom converted to Christianity in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He considers both the functions of traditional spirit cults, and the Christian Holy Spirit describing how the Tumbuka moved away from possession in a traditional sense to possession with a Christian understanding of spirit; and how these people built traditional cultural expression into a new culture. The author then outlines the implications of these shifts for pastoral care.
Book Synopsis Historical and Social Dimensions in African Christian Theology by : Wilson Muoha Maina
Download or read book Historical and Social Dimensions in African Christian Theology written by Wilson Muoha Maina and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Christian theology has been developing for the last four decades. The trend has been to focus on traditional African religions as a foundation for Christian theology. While acknowledging the importance of African traditional religions to Christian theology in Africa, this study argues that African history progressively changes, and it is these changed and changing circumstances that theology is to address. This work analyzes issues affecting Africa today and shows the social and political role that Christianity has to play in an African context. This study views enculturation as a dialogue among African Christians, their history and culture, and Christian teachings. Theological approaches such as anthropological, liberation, and historical are analyzed from the perspective of Small Christian Communities (SCCs), which are a recent development in African Christianity. SCCs are presented as a concrete hermeneutical tool in theological analyses. Further, this work acknowledges the indispensable need for an authentic African Christology in an African Christian theology. While critical of contemporary African Christology, the study also suggests issues to be considered in the development of African Christology.

Book Synopsis Sisters in Spirit by : Andreana C. Prichard
Download or read book Sisters in Spirit written by Andreana C. Prichard and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, historian Andreana Prichard presents an intimate history of a single mission organization, the Universities’ Mission to Central Africa (UMCA), told through the rich personal stories of a group of female African lay evangelists. Founded by British Anglican missionaries in the 1860s, the UMCA worked among refugees from the Indian Ocean slave trade on Zanzibar and among disparate communities on the adjacent Tanzanian mainland. Prichard illustrates how the mission’s unique theology and the demographics of its adherents produced cohorts of African Christian women who, in the face of linguistic and cultural dissimilarity, used the daily performance of a certain set of “civilized” Christian values and affective relationships to evangelize to new inquirers. The UMCA’s “sisters in spirit” ultimately forged a united spiritual community that spanned discontiguous mission stations across Tanzania and Zanzibar, incorporated diverse ethnolinguistic communities, and transcended generations. Focusing on the emotional and personal dimensions of their lives and on the relationships of affective spirituality that grew up among them, Prichard tells stories that are vital to our understanding of Tanzanian history, the history of religion and Christian missions in Africa, the development of cultural nationalisms, and the intellectual histories of African women.

Book Synopsis Morality Truly Christian, Truly African by : Paulinus Ikechukwu Odozor
Download or read book Morality Truly Christian, Truly African written by Paulinus Ikechukwu Odozor and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the largely Eurocentric nature of moral theology in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, what will it take to invest the theological community in the history and moral challenges of the Church in other parts of the world, especially Africa? What is to be gained for the whole Church when this happens in a deep and lasting way? In this timely and important study, Paulinus Ikechukwu Odozor brings greater theological clarity to the issue of the relationship between Christianity and African tradition in the area of ethical foundations. He also provides a constructive example of what fundamental moral theology done from an African and Christian (especially Catholic) moral theological point of view could look like. Following a brief history of the development of African Christian theology, Odozor examines responses of African theologians to African tradition and Christian responses to the reality of non-Christian religions. In a context where the African religious experience and heritage are powerful sources of meaning and identity, Christian evangelization raises questions both about the African primal religions and about Christianity itself and its claims. Odozor takes up the subject of moral reasoning in an African Christian theological ethics and concludes with case studies that show how the African Church has tried to inculturate moral discourse on a religiously pluralistic continent and relate the healing gospel message to African situations. Students and scholars of moral theology and ethics and church leaders will profit from the issues raised in Morality Truly Christian, Truly African.
Book Synopsis The Grammar of the Spirit World in Pentecostalized Africa by : Hermen Kroesbergen, Johanneke Kroesbergen-Kamps, Philipp Öhlmann
Download or read book The Grammar of the Spirit World in Pentecostalized Africa written by Hermen Kroesbergen, Johanneke Kroesbergen-Kamps, Philipp Öhlmann and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2023 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for the spirit world to be real? Scholars from different disciplines investigate this topic focusing on the role played by the spiritual realm in Pentecostalized Africa. The grammatical angle of their research proves to be a fruitful avenue to clarify the kind of reality or realities the spirit world has. This novel approach takes us beyond most existing research by investigating the often unaddressed assumption that we know what it means for the spirit world to be taken as real. This volume shows the importance of paying close attention to the grammar according to which people speak of spirits, Spirit, witchcraft, ancestors and other aspects of the spirit world.
Book Synopsis The Language of Faith in Southern Africa: Spirit World, Power, Community, Holism by : Hermen Kroesbergen
Download or read book The Language of Faith in Southern Africa: Spirit World, Power, Community, Holism written by Hermen Kroesbergen and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a way to do justice to an African language of faith. In systematic theology, anthropology and philosophy of religion, similar debates about how to interpret an African language of faith are ongoing. Trying to avoid the othering discourses of past generations, scholars are careful to take seriously what people in Africa say without portraying peoples beliefs as weird or backward. Yet, in their desperate attempts to avoid othering, these theologians, anthropologists and philosophers often painfully misconstrue the language of faith in Africa. Understanding the language of faith in Southern Africa is not an easy task. How should we take seriously the form of language that often seems so strange and different? I argue that, after African inculturation theology and black liberation theology, a better way to make sense of being a Christian in Southern Africa is to pay close attention to peoples language of faith. The way in which people speak of the spirit world or powers in Africa appears strange to outsiders, and the sense of community and the holistic worldview differentiates the African way of life from its Euro-American counterparts. When proper attention is paid to the use of concepts like spirit world, power, community and holism, language of faith in Southern Africa is neither as strange as it may seem, nor as romantic. By investigating these distinguishing concepts that colour language of faith in Southern Africa, this book contributes to future projects of both fellow theologians who try to construct a contemporary African theology and those who are interested in theology in Africa given the well-known southward shift of the centre of gravity of Christianity.
Book Synopsis Understanding Spiritual Power by : Marguerite G. Kraft
Download or read book Understanding Spiritual Power written by Marguerite G. Kraft and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-08-18 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While secularized cultures of the West have a great deal of difficulty dealing with the spiritual as a real, non-imaginary dimension of life, most of the world's peoples do not. Having worked and studied among peoples of several non-Western societies, Marguerite Kraft is convinced that coming to terms with spiritual power presents one of the greatest challenges for all those who work among non-Westerners in pastoral or mission situations. 'Understanding Spiritual Power' addresses the dynamics of the felt need for spiritual power in relation to a people's assumptions, values, and commitments, in order to provide a foundation for meaningful Christian witness in power-oriented societies. The Western Church, Kraft argues, under pressure from modern rationalism, has largely lost awareness of God's power and position vis-a-vis the spiritual realm so important in other societies. (Indeed, this loss of power could be one reason for the interest in Eastern and New Age philosophies on the part of Westerners disillusioned with the modern worldview.) Having worked among the Kamwe in Nigeria, the Thai in Asia, and the Navajo in North America, Kraft focuses on specific ways in which people in these three societies view reality and suggests how the gospel can be articulated in forms they can understand. 'Understanding Spiritual Power' offers a theological as well as a practical perspective on spiritual power. By exploring living societies, providing examples and case studies, and offering specific strategies, this book makes a powerful case for rethinking and recasting traditional missiological methods. At the same time, it helps Western Christians with ears to hear question whether they might not learn as much from those with whom they work as they seek to teach.

Book Synopsis The Spirit-Led Leader by : Timothy C. Geoffrion
Download or read book The Spirit-Led Leader written by Timothy C. Geoffrion and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-11-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our postmodern, experience-oriented culture, people are longing for greater authenticity, integrity, and depth in their pastors and leaders. Board directors, church members, and staff alike are all eagerly seeking leaders who effectively integrate their spirituality and leadership. Pastors and executives, however, often struggle with knowing how to integrate their spiritual values and practices into their leadership and management roles. Designed for pastors, executives, administrators, managers, coordinators, and all who see themselves as leaders and who want to fulfill their God-given purpose, The Spirit-Led Leader addresses the critical fusion of spiritual life and leadership for those who not only want to see results, but who also desire to care just as deeply about who they are and how they lead as they do about what they produce and accomplish. Geoffrion creates a new vision for spiritual leadership as partly an art, partly a result of careful planning, and always a working of the grace of God

Book Synopsis Crossroads of Culture by : Eric Lindland
Download or read book Crossroads of Culture written by Eric Lindland and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining history, ethnography, and culture theory, this book explores how residents in northwestern Malawi have responded over time to the early missionary assertion that local religious and healing practices were incompatible with Christianity and western medicine. It details how local agents, in the past and today, have constructed new cultural forms that weave facets of ancestral spiritualism and divination with Christianity and biomedicine. Alongside a rich historical review of the late-19th century encounter between Tumbuka-speakers and the Scottish Presbyterians of the Livingstonia Mission, the book explores the contemporary therapeutic dance complex known as Vimbuza and considers two case studies, each the story of a man confronting illness and struggling to understand the roots and meaning of his a?iction. In the process, the book considers the enduring missiological and anthropological topics of conversion and syncretism, and questions the assertion by some scholars that Western missionaries in Africa have been successful agents of religious hegemony.
