Book Synopsis Peak-flux-density Spectra of Large Solar Radio Bursts and Proton Emission from Flares by : Edward W. Cliver
Download or read book Peak-flux-density Spectra of Large Solar Radio Bursts and Proton Emission from Flares written by Edward W. Cliver and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have reexamined the relationship between U-shaped peak-flux-density microwave spectra and solar proton events for approx 200 large (Sp(> or = 2GHz) > or = 800 solar flux uits (sfu) microwave burst (1965 - 1979). The radio spectra fell into two basic classes: (a) U-shaped with two maxima ( > or = 800 sfu) in the range from 200 MHz to > or = 10 GHz (59 percent of all events), and (b) cutoff spectra with a maximum > or = 800 sfu at f > or = 2 GHz and Sp (200 MHz) 100 sfu (18 percent). Nine percent of the events had intermediate spectra with a maximum or = 800 sfu at f > or = 2 GHz and 100 sfu or = Sp (200 MHz) 800 sfu. We were unable to classify 15 percent of the events because of incomplete data. The associations of the three classes of spectra with Type II (and/or Type IV) meter wavelenght bursts and 10 MeV proton events of any size ( or = 0.01 pr per sq cm per sec per sr) are as follows: U-shaped Type II/IV (90 percent of large microwave bursts with U-shaped spectra are associated with Type II/IV events), protons (77 percent); intermediate Type II/IV (78 percent), protons (73 percent); and cutoff Type II/IV (22 percent), protons (33 percent). These statistics affirm various lines of evidence linking coronal shock waves and interplanetary proton events. They also suggest that the meter wavelength branch of the U-shaped spectrum may be attributable to second phase (vs flash phase) accelerated electrons.
Book Synopsis Space Physics by : May-Britt Kallenrode
Download or read book Space Physics written by May-Britt Kallenrode and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations and physical concepts are interwoven to give basic explanations of phenomena and also show the limitations in these explanations and identify some fundamental questions. Compared to conventional plasma physics textbooks this book focuses on the concepts relevant in the large-scale space plasmas. It combines basic concepts with current research and new observations in interplanetary space and in the magnetospheres. Graduate students and young researchers starting to work in this special field of science, will find the numerous references to review articles as well as important original papers helpful to orientate themselves in the literature. Emphasis is on energetic particles and their interaction with the plasma as examples for non-thermal phenomena, shocks and their role in particle acceleration as examples for non-linear phenomena. This second edition has been updated and extended. Improvements include: the use of SI units; addition of recent results from SOHO and Ulysses; improved treatment of the magnetosphere as a dynamic phenomenon; text restructured to provide a closer coupling between basic physical concepts and observed complex phenomena.
Book Synopsis The Sun from Space by : Kenneth R. Lang
Download or read book The Sun from Space written by Kenneth R. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of solar astrophysics and how our perception and knowledge of this star have gradually changed as mankind has elucidated ever more of its mysteries. The emphasis here is on the last decade, which has seen three successful solar spacecraft missions: SOHO, Ulysses and Yohkoh. Together, these have confirmed many aspects of the solar standard model and provided new clues to the numerous open questions that remain. The author, a leading researcher in the field, writes in a clear and concise style. Known also for his famous books "Astrophysical Formulae", "Sun, Earth and Sky" and the prize-winning "Wanderers in Space", he has succeeded once again in addressing a complex scientific topic in a very approachable way.

Book Synopsis Solar Energetic Particles by : Donald V. Reames
Download or read book Solar Energetic Particles written by Donald V. Reames and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book serves as a concise primer introducing the non-specialist reader to the physics of solar energetic particles (SEP). It systematically reviews the evidence for the two main mechanisms which lead to the so-called impulsive and gradual SEP events. This second edition contains two completely new chapters discussing element abundances and shock waves, reflecting new theoretical, modeling, and observational results. Existing chapters have been substantially expanded or updated with additions placed in a broader context. More specifically, the author discusses the timing of the onsets of SEPs, their longitude distributions, their high-energy spectral shapes, their correlations with other solar phenomena, as well as the all-important elemental and isotopic abundances. The book relates impulsive SEP events to magnetic reconnection in solar flares and jets. The concept of shock acceleration by scattering on self-amplified Alfvén waves is introduced, as is the evidence of reacceleration of impulsive-SEP material in the seed population accessed by the shocks in gradual events. The text then develops processes of transport of ions out to an observer. Finally, a technique to determine the source plasma temperature in both impulsive and gradual events is demonstrated. The author also mentions the role of SEP events as a radiation hazard in space and briefly discusses the nature of the main particle telescope designs that have contributed to most of the SEP measurements.
Book Synopsis The Sun and the Heliosphere in Three Dimensions by : R.G. Marsden
Download or read book The Sun and the Heliosphere in Three Dimensions written by R.G. Marsden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th ESLAB Symposium on 'The Sun and the Heliosphere in Three Dimensions' was held in Les Diablerets (Switzerland) on 4-6 June 1985. Organised almost exactly ten years after the Goddard Space Fl i ght Center Sympos i um dea 1 i ng with the Sun and the i nterp 1 anetary medium in three dimensions, the aim of this Symposium was not only to review the progress made in understanding the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of the heliosphere, but also to look ahead to the scientific return to be expected from the Ulysses mission. Scheduled for launch in May 1986, the scientific instrumentation on board Ulysses will shed light on the conditions and processes occurring away from the ecliptic plane, thereby adding literally a new dimension to our understanding of the only stellar plasmasphere to which we have direct access. The scientific programme of the Symposium was built around a series of invited review papers dealing with aspects of the corona and its influence on the interplanetary medium via transient ejecta, the solar wind, energetic solar particles and galactic cosmic rays, interplanetary dust and neutral gas. These invited talks were supplemented by a number of contributed and poster papers. With the exception of three contributed talks and Wibberenz' review of coronal and acceleration of energetic particles, all papers propagation presented at the Symposium are included in this volume.
