Book excerpt: With its fleet of large transport aircraft, the United States military can put personnel and equipment anywhere on the globe within hours. In the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in particular, virtually every soldier, every bullet, every pint of blood, and every bite of food have arrived in the war zone by airlift. This book tells the story of one Air National Guard airlift wing as related by its members. The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard consisted of a squadron of 12 C-130 cargo planes, their crews, and all the supporting sections--in all, more than 1,200 people. The author, a former Associated Press reporter turned aviator, flew as an active member of that unit and interviewed nearly 70 servicemen and women for this book. They include aircrews who dodged heat-seeking missiles, mechanics who made combat repairs, flight nurses who treated and transported the wounded, even two motor pool truck drivers struck by a roadside bomb.

Book excerpt: University Physics is designed for the two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. The text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. Book excerpt: Global warming is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, with profound environmental and social consequences. The dominant scientific explanation blames the burning of fossil fuels, which increases the greenhouse effect by trapping infrared heat in the atmosphere. However, this theory of the greenhouse effect presents inconsistencies with the fundamental laws of physics and thermodynamics. For example, it ignores the role of conduction and convection in heat transfer, wrongly assumes that infrared radiation is equivalent to heat, and does not adequately explain the origin of atmospheric thermal energy. This book carries out a rigorous critical analysis of the theory of the greenhouse effect, exploring its thermodynamic foundations, the kinetic behavior of gases and their modes of heat transfer. He identifies conceptual flaws such as confusion between temperature and heat, excessive emphasis on radiation, and ignorance of the principles of thermal conduction and convection. In this book he presents mathematical and conceptual evidence that CO2 does not play a very important role in atmospheric temperature. On this basis, the book raises the need to develop a new, more comprehensive paradigm to understand the complex physics of the Earth's atmosphere. A renewed theory will require incorporating the contributions of classical thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and the kinetic theory of gases. Only in this way will we be able to build more coherent explanations of global warming, which transcend the limitations of the current view of the greenhouse effect.

This includes machine installation, hydraulic systems, transmissions, as well as industrial design and guidelines for machine design. The second part of this volume deals with the metrological investigation and assessment of the entire machine tool or its components with respect to the properties discussed in the first part of this volume. Following an overview of the basic principles of measurement and measuring devices, the procedure for measuring them is described. Acceptance of the machine using test workpieces and the interaction between the machine and the machining process are discussed in detail. The German Machine Tools and Manufacturing Systems Compendium has been completely revised. The previous five-volume series has been condensed into three volumes in the new ninth edition with color technical illustrations throughout. This first English edition is a translation of the German ninth edition.

Book excerpt: The present book covers the application technology of lasers, focusing more on the vast range of processes than on individual applications, in order to motivate and enable future innovations. The physical basics are presented in the first half of the book. The following examination of application categories and their processes is documented by experts from their practical points of view but always refers back to the underlying physical principles. In this way, readers are free to choose their own individual level of depth in understanding this globally relevant field of innovation.
