Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Spanish Inquisition: Translated From the Original Manuscripts The manner in which the originals of the following work came into the hands of the translator may be described in a few words. These papers are a part of the Records of the Inquisition of Barcelona, and were obtained during the revolution which broke out at Cadiz in 1819. The province of Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital, was one of the most forward and zealous to embrace the cause of freedom. Its inhabitants have, in all times, been distinguished for their daring and determined spirit, and their ardent love of liberty. The revolution moved with rapid strides from the Isle of Leon to the Ebro. On the twentyeighth of February, 1820, the governor of Tarragona received a summons to repair immediately to Madrid, and in a few days the insurrection burst out in the former place. On the fourteenth of March, two days after this, it exploded at Barcelona. The first movement of the revolutionary party was to depose the Captain General of the province. This office was then held by Castanas, a royalist. His predecessor was General Villacampa, an officer of some distinction, who had been deprived of the captain-generalship, and banished to Mataro, a small town on the coast, for his attachment to liberal principles. Castanas was forced to resign, and Villacampa was conducted in triumph from his place of banishment to Barcelona, and reinstated in his dignity by the populace. The government of the city being revolutionized, their next thoughts were directed to the Inquisition, the great engine of priestly oppression, and the object of dread and detestation to the friends of liberty, both political and religious. What motivates citizens to inform on the people next door? In Judge Thy Neighbor, Patrick Bergemann provides a theoretical framework for understanding the motives for denunciations in terms of institutional structures and incentives. In case studies of societies in which denunciations were widespread, Bergemann merges historical and quantitative analysis to explore individual reasons for participation. He sheds light on Jewish converts’ shifting motives during the Spanish Inquisition; when and why seventeenth-century Romanov subjects fulfilled their obligation to report insults to the tsar’s honor; and the widespread petty and false complaints filed by German citizens under the Third Reich, as well as present-day plea bargains, whistleblowing, and crime reporting. Bergemann finds that when authorities use coercion or positive incentives to elicit information, individuals denounce out of self-preservation or to gain rewards. However, in the absence of these incentives, denunciations are often motivated by personal resentments and grudges. In both cases, denunciations facilitate social control not because of citizen loyalty or moral outrage but through the local interests of ordinary participants. We read in the book OF numbers, that the Lord, after he had pardoned the Israelites for their ungrateful and iniquitous murmuring, had debarred them from the Promised Land, on account of that sin. We find that, after the royal David had repented of his adulterous intercourse, and was assured by the prophet Nathan, on the part of God, that the sin was forgiven, a temporal punishment, (the death of the illicit o 'spring, ) as predicted by the man of God, had actually followed. So much for the temporal punishment. That this can be mod erated, or forgiven, is proved by St. Paul's conduct towards the incestuous Corinthian, whose body had been delivered over to Satan, but who, after his penitential tears, and true amendment of life, had been freed by that great apostle, in the person of Christ. From that awful calamity. In a word, from the days of the apostles down to the present period, the Cath olic Church, by virtue of the power which Christ gave her, has granted the relaxation of this temporal punishment, or this indulgence, whenever the spiritual good of the penitent required it, and when there existed a well-grounded apprehension that a rigorous penance would prove preju dicial to him. Hence what the apostle says to the Corinthians in rela tion to that sorrowmg sinner, the Church observes to her pastors, in all penitential cases, You should rather pardon and comfort him, lest per haps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. The Spanish Inquisition (officially known as the "Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition") was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and to replace the Medieval Inquisition, which was under Papal control. It became the most substantive of the three different manifestations of the wider Catholic Inquisition along with the Roman Inquisition and Portuguese Inquisition. The Inquisition was originally intended primarily to identify heretics among those who converted from Judaism and Islam to Catholicism. The regulation of the faith of newly converted Catholics was intensified after the royal decrees issued in 1492 and 1502 ordering Muslims and Jews to convert to Catholicism or leave Castile. The Inquisition was not definitively abolished until 1834, during the reign of Isabella II, after a period of declining influence in the preceding century. The Spanish Inquisition is often cited in popular literature and history as an example of religious intolerance and repression.
