In 2004, the region provided 4.4 per cent of the world's international tourist arrivals and 3.0 per cent of world receipts, with an overall growth rate in arrivals of 8.5 per cent and in receipts of 6.6 per cent. This good performance during 2004 was due to a number of factors, including the best economic growth rate in eight years, progress made towards the peaceful resolution of several regional conflicts, an increase in European visitors to the continent and a growth in new products such as ecotourism and sports tourism. There were significant variations between the performance of different regions in the continent however, with North and West Africa the most successful areas.

Whilst there is much debate over the economical and environmental impacts that tourism entails; the impact of tourism eco-labelling remains an under researched terrain. This dissertation analyses environmental eco-labelling and its affect on German tourists. The aim is to find out to what degree eco-labelling plays a role in the tourism decision making of German tourists. The focus is on the Blue Flag, an eco-label for coastal areas and marinas. Aim and objectives: The principle aim of this dissertation is to analyse the affect of eco-labelling in tourism on the tourism decision making process of Germans travelling to Spanish coastal areas. In order to successfully achieve this aim, it was imperative to establish a set of objectives. The objectives of this dissertation are as follows: - To review the tourism eco-labelling process. - To identify environmental eco-labelling in Spain with the focus on coastal areas. - To determine the importance of eco-labelling for German tourists. - To examine the perception and knowledge of eco-labelling in coastal areas by German tourists travelling to Spain. - To develop a conclusion based on the findings concerning the impact of eco-labelling in Spain on German tourists. The first three objectives will be answered by reviewing and critically examining secondary literature, including academic literature and journals. This will provide an understanding into what previous literature has been published on the subject and will deliver an insight of opinions and perceptions from different authors that had addressed the topic earlier. In order to investigate the recent situation of the third objective and to gain an understanding of the fourth objective primary research will be undertaken. For the purpose of explaining reliability and theory of collecting data secondary literature will be examined and support the research. The fifth objective will be answered by reviewing and evaluating the preceding objectives and deliver a conclusion on the findings. Following appropriate methods, the objectives are discussed throughout each section of the paper. While globalization has served to shrink the world and make it easier for people to travel, the economic openness of neoliberalism has facilitated global flows of both tourists and international capital into every corner of the world. Book excerpt: The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) remains the cornerstone of global ocean governance. However, it lacks effective provisions or mechanisms to ensure that all ocean space and related problems are dealt with holistically. With seemingly no opportunity for revision due to the Conventions burdensome amendment provisions, complementary mechanisms dealing with such aspects of global ocean governance including maritime transport, fisheries, and marine environmental sustainability, have been developed under the aegis of the United Nations and other relevant international organizations. This approach is inherently fragmented and unable to achieve sustainable global ocean governance. In light of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14, the IMLI Treatise proposes a new paradigm on the basis of integrated and cross-sectoral approach in order to realise a more effective and sustainable governance regime for the oceans. This volume focuses on the role of the UN Specialized Agencies towards the development of effective and sustainable ocean governance by looking at the more elaborate mechanisms they developed in order to achieve the desired objectives laid down in UNCLOS. From FAO to UNODC, the volume examines how they ensure sustainable development and how much coordination exists among them.

The parks - most are hotspots of biodiversity - have become a major attraction for foreign and increasingly domestic tourists. Nature tourism is at the same time a source of revenues and a threat to the environmental integrity of conservation areas. This study - based on the theory of structuration and using a triangulation of methods - analyses (eco)tourism in Malaysian national parks from different angles by asking different groups of tourists and experts about their opinions, experiences and needs. In order to learn more about the often neglected group of domestic tourists a large survey was conducted in Kuala Lumpur. The needs of foreign individual and group travellers were analysed with a questionnaire in Gunung Mulu National Park. And experts of conservation and tourism (i.e. scientists, park managers, tour operators, exponents of NGOs) were asked to assess the state and potential of ecotourism in Malaysian national parks. Results show that the increasing heterogeneity and number of visitors and their different needs can put a strain on the environmental integrity of conservation areas. This study makes recommendations to mitigate such strains and to further sustainable tourism.
