Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of, and interest in, quality of life studies has grown dramatically in the last decade. On an ever increasing basis, patients, clinicians, researchers, and health policy regulators are considering quality of life in assessing treatment alternatives. Unfortunately, most discussions of quality of life are narrow in scope -- applying to only one disease group. This unique book represents the concerted effort of experts in academia, federal government health care regulators, and pharmaceutical industry representatives to define the promise and the problems associated with quality of life studies. The issues covered range from cross cutting ones to those that are specific to particular illnesses. Because quality of life takes into consideration such domains as mood, vocation, family, sexual functioning, social participation, and costs, this book will serve as an invaluable companion to readers with an interest in behavioral medicine research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrology can be considered a useful branch of knowledge only if its concepts and principles could be applied to assess the personality and life of a person, and to look into the years ahead to tell him as to what is in store for him. The Signs, Houses and Planets are the three basic factors which need to be understood clearly for developing successful predictive ability. In PREDCTIVE ASTROLOGY--AN INSIGHT, rules and facts pertaining to each of these factors have been given and the effect of one factor on the other has been analysed in a very comprehensible and instructive manner. For timing the events in the life of a person correctly, the Vimshottari Dasa System has been rationalised to fit the calendar in vogue and details of supportive transit indications have also been given. This book is a manual of practical astrology designed to enable the reader to handle queries relating to various facets of everyday life successfully.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is distinct about the last third of life, about women, that makes psychotherapy different? In this diverse collection, the psychological meanings and challenges of the last third of life are explored, as the capacity of the psyche expands, sense of time changes, and some questions take on new vibrance and urgency. Some chapters shine their light on women therapy clients - on their precarious sociocultural predicament in a sexist/ageist time and place, on intrapsychic changes that follow from changing bodies, relationships, involvements and emergent needs of the self. Other chapters enter the largely unexplored territory of changes in the therapy process itself - where some decide against therapy altogether, while others describe a rich revision of familiar elements of therapy, greater authentic presence, a changed standpoint on the power of the therapeutic relationship. Standing inside the ‘‘last third’’ and looking back on their own lives, several women psychotherapists offer a rare window into their private experience across time and their perspectives on the challenges and the gifts that they, and other women, may realize in the last third of their lives as they consider who they have become, who they are, and who they can be. This book was based on a special issue of Women and Therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Hafner, G. Moschel, N. Sartorius The size of the world's population aged over 65 was estimated at about 250 million in 1980; by the year 2025 it is expected to grow to about 760 million (see Hauser, this volume). This sharp increase in life expectancy at birth, in some countries amounting to almost 100% in only a hundred years, has resulted from better nutrition and improved living conditions, hygiene and medical care. Not only life expectancy at birth, but also further life expectancy in advanced age has shown a clear, though more moderate increase. This increased life expectancy, together with a simultaneous fall in birth rates, has caused the mean age of the world population and, especially, the average age of the population of industrial nations to climb substantially in recent times, a development which will reach its peak only some decades from now. For these demographic reasons alone, health care authorities will have to devote more attention to the health problems of the elderly. The main task of medical research is to develop improved methods of disease prevention and treatment. Yet, because the full benefits of such research are only realized after many years of work, researchers have already begun to respond to demographic pressures by focussing part of their efforts on the study of illnesses characteristic of old age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a prophetic time. The interpretation of holy texts, private revelations, and numerous prophecies all point to our current period as the time of a great world transformation. This "Purification Time," as some call it, is when the deeper knowledge of our Earth Mother, and the process progressing us within our sun system, are needed to prepare us for this special period, when unexpected events and fateful choices will arise for each of us. Following their instructions for this period, native priests, and other elders, are restoring sacred knowledge preserved through the ages. It is time for us to remember the true nature of the Earth, and our deep roots within Her life, and how we have been progressing with the Earth through the ages, toward a goal that is about to climax. The author spent two years with his native father, a high priest of his people, helping to pass on this knowledge. Now in his sixties, the author has continued sharing this information wherever he can: on the Internet, in a university project, and now in this book, where it is hoped that our Earth Mother's message will reach a larger audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest violence and violation of human life is legalization of its disposability and annihilation based on its condition. Such killing, whether of self or another, depicts absolute contradiction and betrayal of the very hypothesis of humanity. It manifests absolute failure to provide due care, and that is inhuman. Human life is who we are. It is the basis of any argument for human rights. There cannot be a right to terminate the existence of the rights bearer. Such a right contradicts the possibility of its own existence. There cannot be dignity in terminating the one in whom dignity resides. There can only be indignity in killing a person. The paradox of legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide represents humanity turned on itself. It is endorsement of existential nihilism and objectification of human life. It is the beginning of the end of humanhood. This book is a critical ethical exploration of mind-sets around euthanasia and assisted suicide to provide clarity, sobriety, and objectivity. The book is really about ontology of human life. Dr. Leonard Tumaini Chuwa is a Catholic priest and scholar working for Ascension as director of spiritual care for the state of Florida. Dr. Chuwa is certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC). Chuwa has bachelor of arts degrees in philosophy and theology; master of arts degree in theology and religious studies from John Carroll Jesuit University in Cleveland, Ohio; and a doctor of philosophy degree in bioethics and health-care ethics from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Chuwa is a distinguished public speaker on different bioethical issues. His first book, titled African Indigenous Ethics in Global Bioethics: Interpretation of Ubuntu, was published by Springer Academic Publishing as the first book in a new global bioethics series. Father Chuwa also authored Bioethical False Truths: Egotistic and Relativistic Autonomy vs. Christian and Ubuntu Relational Autonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - Book 2: Sadhana Pada What relevance does the wisdom of the ancient and timeless practice and philosophy of yoga have for us today? Has the world qualitatively changed such that the principles of life and the dynamics of consciousness as observed by the seers and teachers of ancient times are no longer relevant? Is modern culture’s aim of freedom to pursue desires and experience the world through the senses a sufficient explanation and justification of life? In Sadhana Pada the ageless methods for achieving freedom from desires are presented. These life changing principles and practices are offered here so that they can be tested and experienced in the setting of modern life; the experience of peace that they bring can then be measured against the experience of a life spent fulfilling desires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giorgio Agamben's work develops a new philosophy of life. On its horizon lies the conviction that our form of life can become the guiding and unifying power of the politics to come. Informed by this promise, The Power of Life weaves decisive moments and neglected aspects of Agamben's writings over the past four decades together with the thought of those who influenced him most (including Kafka, Heidegger, Benjamin, Arendt, Deleuze, and Foucault). In addition, the book positions his work in relation to key figures from the history of philosophy (such as Plato, Spinoza, Vico, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, and Derrida). This approach enables Kishik to offer a vision that ventures beyond Agamben's warning against the power over (bare) life in order to articulate the power of (our form of) life and thus to rethink the biopolitical situation. Following Agamben's prediction that the concept of life will stand at the center of the coming philosophy, Kishik points to some of the most promising directions that this philosophy can take.
