Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Negro as He Is The radical change in the policy of the Republican party towards the South, under the present administration, increases and intensifies the interest of every thoughtful man in the great social problem of the Negro. He is curious about his past, inquisitive as to his present condition, and anxious for his future. His curiosity and inquisitiveness are easily satisfied, but in them he finds little solace for his anxiety; and the more diligent his research, the more do his solicitude and perplexity increase. In short, the future of the Negro is enigmatic and obscure, and certain facts being known (which only those can know who have associated with him in childhood, and guided him in maturer years), it then can only be indistinctly suggested. It is a great and prevailing mistake to suppose that the Negro is easily understood, or as readily classified as an ordinary specimen in an anatomical museum. Exact knowledge of him is not acquired by the ordinary traveller in a flying trip to the South, nor, indeed, in a six months' or six years' residence there; on the contrary, nothing but an experience gained by constant intercourse in the field, workshop, and household, can furnish the proper data for a correct opinion of his present status. A gentleman of culture, who has devoted much study and thought to the subject of the Negro character, says: "Even we who have lived our whole lives among them, are strangers to their inner life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Southern Negro Whatever may have been the sins of the old South - and every well-informed Southerner is now willing to confess at least some of them, and that, too, without any degree of disloyalty - her development of the negro slaves, as described above, is convincing evidence of her intelligence and philanthropy. In those old days the love of money, which is the root of more than one grievous evil, had certainly not taken possession of our fathers, and had not blinded them to the discharge of their duties toward a race which, in the providence of God, had been placed in their keeping. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of the Southern Negro In my boyhood I often spent a day or night with some neighbor boy, and as white boys in those days were fond of going out to the cabins to hear the negroes talk I, like the others, saw into a great many negro cabins and had good opportuni ties for studying negro character and habits. In those days most of the negroes had more liberty without freedom than they now have with freedom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro: The Southerner's Problem In dealing with this Question in the past, nearly every mistake that could possibly be made has been made, and to-day, after more than thirty-five years of peace and of material prosperity, the Question is apparently as live as it was over a generation ago, when national passion was allowed to usurp the province of deliberation, and the Negro was taught two fundamental errors: first, that the Southern white was inherently his enemy, and, secondly, that his race could be legislated into equality with the white. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Negro: South Carolina Edition No race nor people rise as a whole. Spiritual growth, in tellectual enlightenment and physical development are all in dividual matters. Hence biographies of the individuals of a race constitute a record of prime importance both for the present and for future generations. They also furnish the historian with much valuable data. Emerson says There is no history, only biography. Our Editorial Department has not sought to exploit the views or opinions of any party or of any section. The efiort has been made simply to present facts facts about the representative men and women of the race in the State. Both races must be helped by a proper presentation of the facts about the best element of the Negro race. Too long policies have been inaugurated and actions based on a knowledge of the vicious element only. The gathering of the information for these biographies has made it necessary for our representatives to visit every county and every important town in the State. We believe the first-hand information thus gained by hundreds of personal interviews will give the work peculiar value. The biographies have been written frankly from an appreciative point of view, but the efiort has been made by the Editorial Department to avoid anything like fulsome lauda tion. In every nook and corner of the State we have had the most hearty and cordial co-operation for which we are grateful. We believe the South Carolina Volume of this work tells the story of the men and women, who in the main, should be known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Negro: His Past and Future After the preliminary meeting of the Tri-State Medical Society at Virginia Beach, Dr. P.I!. Barringer, of the University of Virginia, was requested by the acting secretary to prepare for the organization meeting of this Society to be held at Charlotte, X.C, a short talk on the raison d'etre for a new medical society in the South. In this address Dr. Barringer took the position that if this was to be conducted as other societies, there was no need for a new society, as there were sixieties in abundance already in existence which devoted themselves to the general needs of the profession, and that if another society was organized it. should be based upon new lines. He suggested that the entire first lav of each meeting of this new society should be devoted to some subject of broad general interest to the profession, such as the negro problem now facing the South, race mortality, inebriety, etc. This suggestion was well received and the negro problem was chosen as the subject for discussion at the next meeting at Charleston, S. C, and Dr. Barringer appointed leader of debate with the request that, he bring in a paper on the influence of heredity upon the negro. Many papers on the negro were read at this Charleston meeting and the subject freely discussed. By the unanimous vote of the Society it was ordered that the papers of Dr. P.B. Barringer and Dr.S. C.Baker should be printed and sent to all the medical societies in the South with the recommendation that they seriously consider the facts therein set forth. Paulus A. Irving, Secretary Tri-State Medical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Addresses on the Negro in the South We are confronted today by the stubborn fact of some ten mil lions of negroes, who are increasing rather than dying out; who are an important factor in the economic life of America, and particularly of the South; who thus far have not proved assim ilable, either politically or socially - and who, therefore, consti tute a problem. As Southern men, we may well take counsel of ourselves, as to our attitude and responsibilities toward these peo ple and toward the problems created by their presence. Toward a great many human questions I may say that I am fatalistic, rather than sentimental, in my attitude. It is rather the practical aspects of history which appeal to me. I see no di vine plan in the bringing of the negro race to America. I have the utmost respect for those who hold to such a belief. But I cannot share it. I think the case was simply one of a strong people enslaving a weaker, for purely selfish but wholly normal economic purposes. This View serves only to increase the burden of responsibility resting upon the shoulders and the conscience of the white man. I have heard it argued that this contention of present white responsibility based upon the fact of slavery is un sound; that the damages are too remote. A knowledge of the history of the'origin of negro slavery in America suggests that nothing is clear-er or more direct than this responsibility. It is a responsibility which embraces every one of the great maritime powers of Europe in the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth cen turies; England, Spain, France, Portugal and Holland. And most surely it rests also upon America, and bears most heavily upon those of us who are closest to the burden. What are the salient facts of the case? This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Black Reconstruction in America tells and interprets the story of the twenty years of Reconstruction from the point of view of newly liberated African Americans. Though lambasted by critics at the time of its publication in 1935, Black Reconstruction has only grown in historical and literary importance. In the 1960s it joined the canon of the most influential revisionist historical works. Its greatest achievement is weaving a credible, lyrical historical narrative of the hostile and politically fraught years of 1860-1880 with a powerful critical analysis of the harmful effects of democracy, including Jim Crow laws and other injustices. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by David Levering Lewis, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.
