By claiming honor and dreading shame, they controlled their slaves, ruled their households, established the social rankings of themselves, kinfolk, and neighbors, and responded ferociously against perceived threats. The shamed and shameless sometimes suffered grievously for defying community norms. Wyatt-Brown further explains how a Southern elite refined the ethic. Learning, gentlemanly behavior, and deliberate rather than reckless resort to arms softened the cruder form, which the author calls "primal honor." In either case, honor required men to demonstrate their prowess and engage in fierce defense of individual, family, community, and regional reputation by duel, physical encounter, or war. Subordination of African-Americans was uppermost in this Southern ethic. Any threat, whether from the slaves themselves or from outside agitation, had to be met forcefully. Slavery was the root cause of the Civil War, but, according to Wyatt-Brown, honor pulled the trigger.Featuring a new introduction by the author, this anniversary edition of a classic work offers readers a compelling view of Southern culture before the Civil War.

Is it a book?) is the final stage of over one and one-half years of thought, planning and work on the part of those of us associated with the Southern Ethic Show. It began as an idea for a small juried show which, with the help of the Georgia Council for the Arts, would open in Atlanta and then travel throughout Georgia and the rest of the South. But in this lush climate things seem to flourish and overgrow their intended boundaries, and somehow a small show of 35 prints juried by three photographers evolved (with the help of the Institute for Southern Studies and the National Endowment for the Arts) into a book of eighty-one photographs juried by 3 photographers,. an anthropologist, a writer, and an archaeologist for the state of Georgia. This catalogue/book in its own way has somehow become more representative of the Southern Ethic Show than the show itself. The jurors and editors all shared a strong interest in the South and in photography, but there was no attempt to select jurors who had the same ideas about either; nor were criteria for selection of photographs discussed in advance. As a measure of the variety of viewpoints and backgrounds of the panel, only two of the photographs (out of 350 submitted) in this book and in the show were selected by unanimous agreement. As the winnowing continued—from 350 photographs to 175 and then to 81—the show began to assume a strength and coherence and direction that transcended the six individuals who had started out directing the process. In the end, the photographs seemed to be dictating their own criteria for selection and sequencing; the editors merely the tools of their persuasion. For a show about the South, it seems fitting.

Anthony Szczesiul looks at how and why we have taken something so particular as the social habit of hospitality—which is exercised among diverse individuals and is widely varied in its particular practices—and so generalized it as to make it a cultural trait of an entire region of the country. Historians have offered a variety of explanations of the origins and cultural practices of hospitality in the antebellum South. Economic historians have at times portrayed southern hospitality as evidence of conspicuous consumption and competition among wealthy planters, while cultural historians have treated it peripherally as a symptomatic expression of the southern code of honor. Although historians have offered different theories, they generally agree that the mythic dimensions of southern hospitality eventually outstripped its actual practices. One famous answer comes from Max Weber, whose The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism gave a canonical analysis of religious and cultural factors in early modern European economic development. In The Religions of China, Weber contended that China lacked the crucial religious impetus to capitalist growth that Protestantism gave Europe. The preeminent historian Ying-shih Yü offers a magisterial examination of religious and cultural influences in the development of China’s early modern economy, both complement and counterpoint to Weber’s inquiry. The Religious Ethic and Mercantile Spirit in Early Modern China investigates how evolving forms of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism created and promulgated their own concepts of the work ethic from the late seventh century into the Qing dynasty. The book traces how religious leaders developed the spiritual significance of labor and how merchants adopted this religious work ethic, raising their status in Chinese society. However, Yü argues, China’s early modern mercantile spirit was restricted by the imperial bureaucratic priority on social order. He challenges Marxists who championed China’s “sprouts of capitalism” during the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries as well as other modern scholars who credit Confucianism with producing dramatic economic growth in East Asian countries. Yü rejects the premise that China needed an early capitalist stage of development; moreover, the East Asian capitalism that flourished in the later half of the twentieth century was essentially part of the spread of global capitalism. Now available in English translation, this landmark work has been greatly influential among scholars in East Asia since its publication in Chinese in 1987.
